University of Albany & NY Giants Announce Paul Layton as Capital District Student Scholarship Recipient - UAlbany Sports 2009

Albany, N.Y. -- University at Albany Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy announced on Tuesday, Aug. 18 that Paul Layton has been awarded the Capital District Student Scholarship, sponsored by New York Giants Football, Inc. and UAlbany.

Layton, a freshman placekicker and punter on the UAlbany football team, was selected Class A first-team all-state by the New York State Sportswriters Association. He made 68 of 69 point-after attempts and three field goals, plus averaged 42 yards per punt. He ranks third on the all-time Section II kicking list with 77 points.

A consensus first-team All-Area quarterback by the Albany Times Union, Daily Gazette and Troy Record, Layton passed for 1,302 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior. He also rushed for 1,186 yards and 20 TDs. In 2008, Layton led Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School to its second sectional title in the last three years and a trip to the state championship game. The Spartans finished with a 12-1 record.

A National Honor Society student, Layton plans to study business administration. His parents are Jim and Karen Layton. He has two sisters, Jessica and Lauren, and one brother, Steve.

The Capital District Student Scholarship provides Layton with a monetary award equivalent to the tuition costs of four years at the University at Albany. The Giants are training on the UAlbany campus for a record-setting 14th consecutive summer. Training camp continues through Tuesday, Aug. 25.

TRAINING CAMP NOTES: The New York Giants will practice twice on Aug. 19 and 20 on the UAlbany campus ... Wednesday's practice times are 9:15-10:25 a.m. and 6:05-8:05 p.m. ... Thursday's morning jog-thru session begins at 8:55 a.m. and is followed by a regular workout, from 2:35-4:35 p.m. ... The Giants will hold another jog-thru on Friday morning at 10:25 a.m. prior to Saturday's second preseason game against the Chicago Bears ... An all-session training camp parking pass is $15.00, while the daily parking fee is $5.00 ... Dutch (Student Gold) Lot is the primary public parking facility.
