UALBANY'S LACROSSE STAR FRANK RESETARITS SIGNS WITH STEALTH

Frank Resetarits was recently named a first-team All-American after scoring 57 goals for Albany.Frank Resetarits signed a one-year contract with San Jose on Friday. The standout forward from University of Albany was the first player selected by the Stealth in the 2007 Entry Draft at fifth overall.

Recently named a first-team All-American, he finished second in goals (3.17 per game) and third in scoring (4.44 points/game) in the nation. Resetarits was also the 2007 America East Conference Player of the Year, scoring 57 goals and 23 assists for 80 points, the third-highest single-season total in the program's history. He led UAlbany to the NCAA quarterfinal round for the first time in the program's history, and a school-record 15-3 mark.

"We are thrilled to have Frank with us for the coming season, and feel he will be a huge part of our offense," said Stealth assistant GM Doug Locker. "He is a very talented player who brings great size to our offense. We believe that he is a perfect compliment to work with Jeff [Zywicki] and Luke [Wiles]. Frank has always achieved at a high level in every situation he has played in, as he was not only a first Team All American at Albany, but also scored over 40 goals in his last season of junior lacrosse in St. Catharines."

A formidable attackman in the field game, the Western New York product has also taken the time to learn the nuances of the indoor game.

"Frank played junior lacrosse (for St. Catharines) in the same program that I played in during my junior days", said Stealth President and GM Johnny Mouradian. "He also had his first experiences watching the indoor game in Buffalo in the early 90's, while I was serving as GM of the Bandits. I'm glad that our paths to San Jose have some similarities".

Some notes about this year's final media poll

Delaware and Albany have finished as high as either team ever has in this year's poll

This is the first time since the inception of the media poll that Syracuse has not been ranked at the end of the season

During the season, Cornell was the only team in the country to hold the top spot for more than one week. Cornell became No. 1 on March 12 and held the top spot throughout the regular season polls (which ended May 7), a stretch during which they were undefeated

Johns Hopkins was No. 1 for just one week, the week of February 19. Hopkins, however, earned the ranking with a 0-0 record and moved from its preseason ranking of No. 2 up to No. 1 after then-top-ranked Virginia lost to Drexel in the first week of lacrosse action

Former UAlbany Cornerback Rashad Barksdale Makes History in NFL's Chiefs-Jaguars Game

Kansas City, Mo. – Former University at Albany football standout Rashad Barksdale made history in Sunday’s National Football League game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Barksdale became the first UAlbany player to appear in an NFL regular-season game when he took the field on special teams for the opening kickoff. He also played on the punt cover and punt return units and made a fourth-quarter tackle with 6:08 remaining.

“When I first stepped onto the field it was the first play of the game,” said Barksdale, whose team fell to Jacksonville, 17-7, at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium on Oct. 7. “The crowd was really into it and it was so loud ... a great experience.”

Barksdale, a native of Hudson, N.Y. who had been on the inactive list for the Chiefs’ opening four games, was added to Kansas City’s 53-man roster in early September. He was selected in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round. The Eagles released him at the end of the preseason to get down to their final roster before Kansas City claimed him off waivers.

“I have come a long way to get where I am right now,” offered Barksdale, who came to the UAlbany program as a walk-on in the summer of 2006 after playing two years on the school’s baseball team. “The UAlbany football program has done the same where they actually have now had someone play in a real NFL game. I have never been able to say, I was the first to do something, but that all changed today.”

UAlbany got another commitment for 2008-09 when Zanesville (Ohio) guard Logan Aronhalt verballed on Thursday night.

Aronhalt, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior, averaged 18 points and eight rebounds last season for his father and coach, Scott. He earned first-team all-state honors.

Aronhalt chose UAlbany over scholarship offers from Bowling Green, Duquesne, Air Force, Holy Cross, Bucknell, Vermont and Toledo.

Aronhalt gives the Great Danes a big guard to replace 6-5 Brian Lillis, who is graduating after this season.



UAlbany gets verbal commitment from Chicago forward

UAlbany received a verbal commitment on Sunday night from 6-foot-9 forward Jake Lindfors of Driscoll Catholic High School in Chicago. Lindfors will join UAlbany for the 2008-09 season.

Lindfors averaged 17.6 and 9.5 rebounds last season and had 16 double-doubles.

Lindfors’ commitment will become official when he signs his national letter of intent during the early signing period from Nov. 14-21.

Lindfors chose UAlbany over offers from Illinois State, Eastern Kentucky, Wright State, Western Illinois, Eastern Illinios, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Florida Gulf Coast and DePaul, which may have wanted Lindfors to redshirt as a freshman.

This should leave UAlbany head coach Will Brown with two more scholarships to give for 2008-09. Forward Brent Wilson and guards Brian Lillis and Jon Iati are graduating after this season.

Women's Lacrosse Helps Raise More Than $3,000 for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorder Center

Albany, N.Y. – The University at Albany women’s lacrosse program held a clinic and three-on-three tournament at the campus’ John Fallon Field on Monday, Oct. 8 in an effort to support the Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorder Center. The clinic and tournament, which was attended by more than 100 girls between fifth and 12th grades, raised $3,020 for the Albany Medical Pediatric Oncology Unit and Student Care for Kids.

The event was held in honor of Meghan Ladouceur, the sister of current UAlbany freshman Tee Ladouceur, and Kate Sullivan, a freshman on last year’s Great Danes’ team. Meghan Ladouceur, a sophomore on the girls’ lacrosse squad at Bethlehem Central High School, has Stage II Lymphoma, a cancer that starts in the lymphatic tissue. Sullivan had a benign brain tumor removed last June and is expected to return to school for the 2008 spring semester.

“This was an upbeat tournament for a good cause,” said Tee Ladouceur, whose family has gone through an emotional last month dealing with her sister’s illness. “It is good to see so much support. It’s been a fun day for kids playing lacrosse and at the same time helping out families.”

#16 UAlbany Field Hockey upends Fairfield 3-0 as Lindsey Records Goal and Assist

Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore defender Jess Lindsey recorded a goal and an assist to lead No. 16 UAlbany to a 3-0 win in America East field hockey action at Alumni Turf Field on Sunday, Oct. 7.

Lindsey tallied the first goal of the game just over two and a half minutes into the contest as she redirected a shot by junior Michele Polizois off a penalty corner.

The Great Danes scored their second goal of the game in the 27th minute off another penalty corner. Freshman Sam Daly registered the goal off assists from Lindsey and freshman Anouk Vandenberg.

UAlbany scored its third goal off a scramble in front of the cage by freshman Chelsea Neff at the 59:03 mark.

The Great Danes outshot the Stags 19-2, including a 13-0 margin in the second half, and had an 18-1 advantage in penalty corners. UAlbany junior goalkeeper Ashley Ross made one save in the first half before giving way to freshman Christine Hoffman, who did not need to make a save in her 35 minutes of action. Elizabeth Thomas made seven saves in goal for Fairfield (2-11, AE 0-3).

Eckhardt Leads UAlbany to a 3-0 Sweep of Maine in A-East Volleyball Action

Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore outside hitter Kate Eckhardt recorded a career-high 13 kills and completed her first career double-double with 13 digs to lead the UAlbany volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Maine in America East Conference action in University Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The Great Danes won with scores of 30-14, 30-19 and 30-19.

Freshman outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey also finished with double-digit kills, tallying 12 to go along with nine digs and five service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Valerie Sourbeer finished with double-digit kills for the third straight match, recording 11 to go with a .455 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Brooke Stanley notched a match-high 43 assists and nine digs.

Maine was led by middle hitter Amy Lawson, who finished with 11 kills. Emily Root led the Black Bears defensively with 15 digs while Lindsay Allman added 12 digs and eight kills. Paige Tortorello recorded 17 assists for Maine (1-15, AE 0-4).

Jason Fralicker's Last-Second Field Goal Leads to UAlbany's 24-23 Victory Against Stony Brook

Albany, N.Y. – Jason Fralicker booted a 17-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining to lift UAlbany to a 24-23 victory over Stony Brook in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, Oct. 6 at University Field. The game was delayed twice for a combined one hour and 38 minutes due to lightning and thunderstorms.

Stony Brook (3-3) rallied from a 21-6 deficit in the third quarter behind the play of wide receiver Lynell Suggs, who hauled in a career-high 13 passes for 200 yards. Quarterback Josh Dudash hooked up with Suggs on a 69-yard scoring strike down the left sideline to begin the comeback. Dudash, who completed 20 of 32 passes, then engineered a 14-play, 86-yard drive on his team’s next possession. He found Dwayne Eley in the right flat to the UAlbany two-yard line for a first down. But Eley fumbled while fighting for more yardage and Suggs recovered the loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Dudash then hit Suggs on a slant pattern for the two-point conversion and a 21-21 tie.

The Seawolves, who had won the last two meetings in this series based partly on UAlbany turnovers, used a safety to take the lead with 11:36 remaining in the final quarter. Dan Archer’s snap went over punter Chris Lynch’s head and out of the end zone for a 23-21 lead.

After the teams traded a series of punts, UAlbany took possession with 3:29 left and marched 79 yards in 15 plays for the winning field goal. Quarterback Vinny Esposito, who connected on 14 of 23 attempts for 155 yards, made a pair of successful third-down throws to keep the sequence alive. He hit flanker Daniel Bocanegra with a 17-yard pass to the Stony Brook 16. Sophomore tailback Dave McCarty then rumbled inside the five on a 14-yard run to set up Fralicker’s winning kick.

“There was point in that game where we looked in control,” said UAlbany coach Bob Ford, who was coaching against Chuck Priore, a former Great Dane player and assistant. “There were peaks and valleys, but good teams find a way to win. The offense put it together when they absolutely needed to.”

UAlbany (2-3) took a 7-0 lead on its opening drive when Esposito scored on a one-yard sneak. The sophomore tossed a 15-yard completion to McCarty in a third-down situation and later scrambled seven yards for a first down. The Great Danes, who were coming off a loss to nationally-ranked Montana two weeks ago, moved out to a 14-3 lead in the same period when McCarty burst through the middle and broke two tackles en route to a 16-yard TD scamper. The touchdown was set up by linebacker Mark Peretore’s fumble recovery.

Stony Brook closed within 14-6 at halftime on Luke Gaddis’ second field goal of the half, a 23-yarder with 8:45 left in the period. UAlbany built its 15-point lead on the first series of the third quarter. McCarty, who rushed 18 times for a career-high 157 yards, reached paydirt on a 46-yard dash over the left side.

“I have never really kicked a (winning) field goal in my life,” offered Fralicker, who tied the school’s record with his 22nd career field goal. “It’s never easy to make one of those and Chris (Lynch) made an amazing hold of the (high) snap.”

Stony Brook’s Conte Cuttino led all rushers with 204 yards on 34 carries, including a 63-yard scamper that produced his team’s first field goal. The Seawolves, who are playing as an independent this season, will join the Big South Conference in 2008.

“We were pretty excited to get a chance (at the end),” explained Esposito, whose 69-yard scoring pass to Mike Wall in the fourth quarter was wiped out by a holding call. “This was a big win because we needed some momentum going into the conference schedule. This is where the season starts for us.”

Savage Scores in Fifth Straight Game to Lead UAlbany Past Vermont 1-0

Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore Nicole Savage scored in the 50th minute to lead the No. 16-ranked UAlbany field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Turf Field.

Savage scored off a penalty corner for the Great Danes to tally a goal in her fifth consecutive contest. Freshman Anouk Vandenberg and sophomore Jess Lindsey were credited with assists on the goal.

The Great Danes outshot the Catamounts 7-5 in the contest and held a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Ross recorded three saves to register her fifth shut-out of the season, while Kristen Heavens made five saves in goal for Vermont (8-5, AE 1-1).

UAlbany (10-3, AE 2-0) returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. against America East Conference foe Fairfield.

AARNIO EARNS 100TH CAREER COACHING VICTORY IN GREAT DANES 1-0 WIN AT VERMONT

Burlington, Vt. – The UAlbany men’s soccer team defeated Vermont on Saturday afternoon, 1-0, in double overtime on an own goal by the Catamounts. Great Danes head coach Johan Aarnio earned his 100th career coaching victory with the win.

Freshman Ian Peach served a shot parallel to the goal line in the 107th minute and a Vermont defender knocked the ball into the goal as he was sliding to keep it out.

Aarnio improves his overall record to 100-77-21 in 13 combined years at RPI and UAlbany, including a 59-61-16 record in eight seasons at UAlbany.

UAlbany was outshot in the contest 21-12, including a 14-3 margin in the second half, but was able to keep the Catamounts off the board. Vermont also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. UAlbany senior goalkeeper Steward Ceus recorded nine saves in the contest, including a wide open shot by Vermont’s Marty Galvin early in the second overtime period. Roger Scully stopped two shots in goal for Vermont (3-8, AE 0-1).

New Hampshire Defeats UAlbany, 3-2, in A-East Conference Volleyball Action

Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore middle hitter Kirsten Bates recorded a match-high 28 kills to go along with 22 digs in leading New Hampshire to a 3-2 win over UAlbany in America East Conference volleyball action on Friday evening. The Wildcats won with scores of 25-30, 30-24, 26-30, 30-26 and 15-10.

Freshman outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey continued her strong play for the Great Danes, finishing with a team-high 15 kills and 18 digs for her eleventh double-double of the season. Senior middle blocker Ashley Crenshaw also recorded double-digit kills, recording 13 to go along with four total blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Kamisha Kellam added 12 kills while sophomore outside hitter Valerie Sourbeer recorded 10 kills. Freshman setter Brooke Stanley recorded a double-double of the assist-dig variety for UAlbany with 53 assists and 15 digs, along with three service aces and two block assists.

Bates also helped New Hampshire out-block the Great Danes, 16-7, as she finished with five total blocks. Senior outside hitter Toni Barnas finished with 12 kills, while Emmy Blouin and Jessica Compton added 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Libero Alyse Lahti led the team defensively with a match-high 28 digs while Compton recorded eight total blocks. Setter Kate Uitti finished with 61 assists and 12 digs for New Hampshire (12-6, AE 1-2).

UAlbany (12-6, 2-1) will continue conference play on Sunday, hosting Maine at 2 p.m. in University Gymnasium.

Update on UAlbany's Football Stadium

ALBANY, N.Y. -- It's three years in the works, but UAlbany's vision to have a state-of-the-art multi-sport complex is closer to reality than ever.

Athletic Director Lee McElroy said they have already submitted their plan to the State University of New York Board of Trustees.

"What we'd like to see are 10,000 to 15,000 people all dressed in purple sweaters and having a good time and tailgating and having wonderful experience for their families and friends, alumni and students. That's what we envision," said McElroy.

The University at Albany says it wants its sports facilities to match its talent. And that is why they are proposing an estimated $60 million stadium. Our Erin Billups has details about the plan.

But the final say is up to the state. The school is asking for approximately 60 million public dollars to build the stadium. It's a large chunk, but already there's support from local Senator Neil Breslin who said it's a work in progress, but not far-fetched.

"This has an important element that it increases the visibility of the State University, it increases the visibility of New York State nationally, and at the same time is long overdue," said Breslin.

Buffalo and Stony Brook are two of schools that have tapped into the SUNY construction fund to upgrade their sports facilities. McElroy says now it's UAlbany's turn.

"What I'm saying is the success that Albany has had and continues to have, we want to raise it to the level and raise the ante, and this is one way of doing this," said McElroy.

The field UAlbany uses now for its football games was built in the 1960s, and the worn wooden benches look just as old. They don't reflect the current level of sports at UAlbany. McElroy said in order for the school to attract the talent it needs, they'll have to take it up a notch.

"We're in the business of bringing in quality young people both athletically and academically, and in order to do that we need to have a facility that's comparable to our peers," said McElroy.

The school has already started raising the $10 million in private funding it needs.

There isn't a time line yet for building. The school is in the design phase and is waiting to begin the environmental impact study for possible sites on or near the uptown campus.

UAlbany Releases Men's and Women's Basketball Schedules for 2007-08 Season

Albany, N.Y. – University at Albany Vice President and Director of Athletics and Recreation Lee McElroy announced on Thursday, Oct. 4 the school's men's and women's basketball schedules for the 2007-08 season. The America East Conference has released schedules for all nine member institutions.

The men's conference schedule begins on Jan. 3 against New Hampshire at Lundholm Gymnasium. The season concludes with the America East Conference Tournament on March 7, 8, 9 and 15. Binghamton University's Events Center will host the first round, quarterfinals and semifinals.

The Great Danes, who are coming off consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, open their schedule on the road with a pair of 22-win clubs in Bucknell (Nov. 10) and Central Connecticut State (Nov. 14). UAlbany's non-conference schedule features Duke, a program that has won three national titles under head coach Mike Krzyzewski, and an appearance in the ESPNU BracketBusters series for the third consecutive season. Boise State, last year's BracketBusters opponent, is among five non-league opponents that will play at SEFCU Arena. The Great Danes will also host Columbia (Nov. 17), Lehigh (Nov. 20), Sacred Heart (Nov. 25) and St. Francis, N.Y. (Dec. 15). UAlbany faces Iowa State on Dec. 30 in the program's first-ever meeting with a Big 12 Conference school and tangles with Siena in the crosstown-rivalry's 48th meeting on Saturday, Dec. 1.

UAlbany will again make several television appearances in 2007-08, with 11 games scheduled to be aired on a national or regional basis. ESPN2 will televise the matchup with Duke on Monday, Dec. 17 at 7:00 p.m. The Great Danes will appear three times on the America East TV package, including dates with Vermont (Jan. 6 & Feb. 11) and Boston University (Jan. 16). Time Warner Cable is tentatively scheduled to air seven home games, highlighted by the Big Purple Growl contest with Stony Brook on Saturday, Feb. 2.

The women's program has a 16-game America East schedule that starts on Jan. 5 at New Hampshire. The Great Danes meet Maine in their first conference home game on Sunday, Jan. 13 at 2:00 p.m. The season ends with the America East Conference Tournament on March 13-16 at the University of Hartford's Chase Arena.

UAlbany begins play on the road against NIT participant Indiana on Nov. 9, while the home opener at SEFCU Arena against Colgate is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m. The non-league slate includes an appearance in Long Island's Turkey Classic on Nov. 23-24 and a first-round matchup with defending Patriot League champion Holy Cross. In addition to the Colgate contest, UAlbany meets non-conference opponents Buffalo (Dec. 5), Marist (Dec. 22) and St. Francis, N.Y. (Dec. 28) at home. The crosstown meeting with Siena returns to a doubleheader format at the Times Union Center on Dec. 1.

The Great Danes entertain Boston University at SEFCU Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 12 noon, as part of NCAA Commitment to Education Day. The game will be televised by Time Warner Cable in the Capital Region. UAlbany squares off with Stony Brook in the first half of the Big Purple Growl doubleheader, the University's Winter Homecoming, on Feb. 2.

UAlbany Field Hockey Moves Up to #16 in the STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll

Albany, N.Y. – The UAlbany field hockey team moved up one spot to #16 in the STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, as announced on Tuesday morning. It is the highest placing for the Great Danes, who have been ranked for four straight weeks.

Nicole Savage Scores Twice to Lead #17 UAlbany Field Hockey to a 3-1 Win Over UMass

Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Nicole Savage scored two goals, including the gamewinner, to lead #17 UAlbany to a 3-1 win over Massachusetts in field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Turf Field. With the win, the Great Danes improve to 9-3 overall, including a perfect 5-0 record at home.

Cher King opened up the scoring for UMass five minutes into the game, slipping an unassisted, reverse stick shot from the top of the circle past UAlbany goalkeeper Christine Hoffman. Savage tied the game less than two minutes later, taking a crossing pass from Michelle Simpson in front of the cage and knocking it past Minutewoman goaltender Becky Letourneau.

Savage struck again with her team-leading tenth goal of the season with 15:56 left in the first half. In a scramble in front of the cage, freshman Alysia Hough tipped the ball to Savage, who got her stick on the ball to put it in the cage. Simpson closed out the scoring with 10:23 left on the clock, as Michele Polizois passed the ball from the right side of the circle to Simpson, who reversed it in past Letourneau.

UAlbany outshot UMass 11-8, including 6-3 in the scoreless second half. The Minutewomen had a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners. Hoffman earned the win, making two saves in the first half. Junior Ashley Ross played the second half in the cage for the Great Danes, stopping two shots. Letourneau played all 70 minutes, making six saves in the cage for UMass (5-6).

The Great Danes will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, as they host America East Conference opponent Vermont at 1 p.m. at Alumni Turf Field.

Kamisha Kellam Leads UAlbany Volleyball to a 3-2 America East Victory Over Stony Brook

Albany, N.Y. – Junior middle blocker Kamisha Kellam recorded a team-high 18 kills and a match-high seven total blocks to lead UAlbany to a 3-2 win over Stony Brook in America East Conference volleyball action on Saturday evening. The Great Danes won with scores of 25-30, 31-29, 27-30, 30-28 and 15-11.

Kellam hit a team-best .333 for the match. Freshman outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey recorded her tenth double-double of the season, finishing with 16 kills and 15 digs, while also recording two solo blocks and one block assists. Senior middle blocker Ashley Crenshaw added 13 kills while sophomore outside hitter Valerie Sourbeer tallied 11 kills and four digs, hitting .308 for the match. Freshman setter Brooke Stanley had a career-high 67 assists to go along with eight digs and three kills.

Outside hitter Jackie Ahlers had a match-high 26 kills for Stony Brook. Morgan Sweany added 21 kills and had 10 digs to complete her double-double. Amy Oleksigj and Alicia Nelson tallied 10 and 11 kills, respectively. Setter Kaitlyn Deutsch had a double-double of the assist-dig variety, finishing with 64 assists and 14 digs. Libero Noelle Bay led the team defensively, finishing with 19 digs for Stony Brook (12-7, AE 0-1).

UAlbany (12-5, AE 2-0), which has now won ten straight matches dating back to Sept. 13, will return to action on Friday, Oct. 5, hosting America East opponent New Hampshire at 7 p.m. in University Gymnasium.

Nicole Savage Nets Team-High Eighth Goal To Lead Field Hockey to 3-0 Victory Over Maine

Orono, Maine – Sophomore Nicole Savage scored her team-high eighth goal of the season in the 22nd minute to lead No. 17 UAlbany to a 3-0 victory at Maine in the America East Conference field hockey opener for both teams on Friday, Sept. 28.

Savage got the Great Danes on the board at the 21:45 mark of the first half off a scramble from in front of the cage on an assist by senior Michelle Simpson. The teams played the final 13 minutes of the half scoreless to give UAlbany a 1-0 lead at the intermission.

After nearly playing the second half scoreless, the Great Danes added two quick goals in the 63rd and 64th minutes. Junior Michele Polizois added her third goal of the season at the 27:20 mark of the second half. Jess Lindsey and Anouk Vandenberg were credited with assists on a scoring play that originated off a penalty corner.

The Great Danes, who are nationally ranked in the NFHCA Coaches Poll, went ahead 3-0 as Simpson tallied her eighth goal of the season, to tie Savage for the team lead, by tipping in a shot by Sam Daly.

Ashley Ross recorded seven saves in earning her fourth shutout of the season for the Great Danes. Rebecca Giroux made five saves in goal for the Black Bears. Each team registered 12 shots in the contest. UAlbany and Maine (4-6, 0-1 America East) recorded five penalty corners apiece.

Albany, N.Y. – Freshman outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey recorded her ninth double-double of the season to lead UAlbany to a 3-0 win over Hartford in America East Conference volleyball action on Friday evening. The Great Danes swept the Hawks by scores of 30-27, 30-20 and 30-22.

Cowdrey recorded a match-high 16 kills and 14 digs to pace the Great Danes to their ninth straight win. Cowdrey, the reigning America East rookie of the week, also tallied three total blocks and one service ace while finishing with a .353 hitting percentage. Senior middle blocker Ashley Crenshaw added 13 kills, hitting .522 for the match, while freshman outside hitter Teresa Coppiellie finished with 13 digs. Freshman setter Brooke Stanley also tallied a double-double of the assist-dig variety, recording 45 assists and 11 digs.

Jennifer Monroy finished with a double-double of her own for Hartford, tallying 11 kills and 10 digs. Erin Macro also finished with 11 kills for the Hawks, while Hallie Fullagar recorded a match-high 16 digs for Hartford (7-11, AE 0-1)

Former UAlbany Basketball Stars Lucious Jordan & Levi Levine Sign With European Teams

Albany, N.Y. – Former University at Albany basketball players Lucious Jordan and Levi Levine, who led the Great Danes to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2005-06, recently signed to play this season in Europe. Jordan, a 6-foot-2 guard from Albany, N.Y., is a member of the Emmen Eagles, a second division team in Holland. Levine, a 6-foot-6 forward from New York, N.Y., is playing in Ireland’s top division with the UCC Demons.

Jordan, who was on the roster of the CBA’s Albany Patroons for a period of time last year, was named to the 2006 America East Conference all-championship team when he led the Great Danes to their first conference title and an 21-11 record. He averaged 8.4 points and 3.2 rebounds as a senior, and netted 12 points in a memorable NCAA first-round battle with No. 2 Connecticut in Philadelphia. Jordan, who transferred from Loyola, Md. after his sophomore season, scored 1,418 career points on the collegiate level.

Levine, who was a tri-captain with Jordan on the 2005-06 UAlbany squad, played in Germany last year. He finished his college career ranked No. 14 on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,270 points in 114 games played. Levine was also sixth in steals (138), 13th in rebounding (610) and tied for 16th in assists (250). He scored in double figures on 68 occasions.

Boring Leads UAlbany Women's Soccer to 2-2 Tie With Siena

Albany, N.Y. – Freshman striker Teresa Boring scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season to pace UAlbany to a 2-2 draw with crosstown-rival Siena on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at Varsity Field. Boring has tallied the Great Danes’ last six goals.

Boring would get UAlbany (3-3-3) on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute when she collected a loose ball just beyond the penalty spot and beat Saints keeper Patti Carroll to the far post for the 1-0 lead. Siena would even the score with 5:07 to play in the first half courtesy of a Deonna Gould tap-in from an Arielle Brazer cross.

The Saints would take a 2-1 lead with just under eight minutes elapsed in the second half when Tabitha Tice chipped a shot over UAlbany’s Maria Liguori from 15 yards out. Boring and the Great Danes would retaliate, tying the game at 2-2 with 14:55 to play. Uju Ogbuawa sent a free kick into the penalty area where Ashley Tirabassi kept the play alive by heading the ball across the box to Boring who converted on the five-yard shot.

Siena (3-4-1) controlled the first overtime stanza, with Tice getting the perfect set-up to earn the Saints the win in the 98th minute when she took a shot all alone from 10 yards out and hit the crossbar. Tice would get another shot at the game-winner just a minute later but missed a one-on-one with Liguori wide left.

The best opportunity in the final 10 minutes for UAlbany came with 1:25 remaining when Boring freed herself at the top right side of the box, but could not get off a clean shot.

Carroll finished the game with five saves, while Liguori stopped a season-high 12 shots. The Saints had a 27-11 advantage in shots and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

UAlbany will open up the America East Conference portion of its schedule on Sunday, Sept. 30, when they host Maine at 12 noon.

University at Albany Athletic Hall of Fame Will Enshrine Class of 2007 on Friday, Oct. 12

Albany, N.Y. – Three former athletes will be enshrined into the University at Albany Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, October 12 at the 24th annual HOF Dinner and Induction Ceremony. A reception for the Athletic Hall of Fame inductees begins at 6:00 p.m., with the dinner and ceremony to follow in SEFCU Arena on campus.

The induction ceremony is part of Homecoming and Family Weekend, which also includes Saturday's football game at University Field with Northeast Conference-rival Sacred Heart at 4:00 p.m. A men's soccer match with America East Conference opponent New Hampshire begins at 1:00 p.m, while the 41st UAlbany Cross Country Invitational is also scheduled. The women's 5K race is slated for 10:45 a.m., while the men's 8K event starts at 11:30 a.m.

The new inductees and their sports: Alan Cornfield '85, lacrosse (posthumously); Mike Grever '99, football; and Kelly Poynton '99, softball.

With this year's class, there are 114 former athletes, coaches, and administrators who have been inducted into the University at Albany's Athletic Hall of Fame.


Alan Cornfield (1982-85) -- One of the top goalkeepers in the history of the men's lacrosse program, Cornfield is being inducted into UAlbany's Athletic Hall of Fame posthumously. He died, at the age of 38, in a tragic boating accident on October 1, 2001. He completed his college career as the school's all-time saves leader with 941, plus scored two goals and had two assists.

A native of Oceanside, N.Y., Cornfield established the single-season saves record of 301 as a senior captain in 1985. He had a .632 save percentage with 74 ground balls. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound goalkeeper piled up 30 or more saves twice, including a career-high 35 against Vermont. He stopped 19 shots in a 13-6 victory against Siena on April 26. Cornfield averaged 23.2 saves per game and probably would have earned All-America recognition, according to his head coach Rick Flanders, if the team had a winning record.

In 1984, Cornfield led the Great Danes to a 7-6 campaign as a Division III program, including wins over local rivals Rensselaer, Union and Siena, winning the unofficial "Capital Cup." He posted a season-high 20 saves, including 12 in the second half, in a 12-9 triumph over the Saints on April 6. Cornfield recorded double-figure saves on 10 occasions, including victories against Vermont, Oneonta and Potsdam.

As a sophomore in the cage, Cornfield totaled 196 saves and 55 ground balls and registered a .660 save percentage. He made 20 or more saves in five games, including a season-high 24 against nationally-ranked Cortland. He also turned aside 21 shots in a 17-10 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and 20 in an 11-5 win against Oswego. UAlbany posted an 8-4 record under head coach Mike Motta, the team's best record in nearly a decade.

Cornfield made an immediate impact as a freshman when he accounted for 286 saves, the second-best single-season total in school annals, and had a .678 save percentage with 45 ground balls. He made 20-plus saves against five opponents, including a season-high 32 vs. Siena and 29 against Oswego.

Cornfield, who earned his B.S. in psychology, went on to own a mortgage banking and brokerage firm with his father-in-law in Garden City on Long Island. He also became the commissioner of the Dix Hills Fire Department after coming up through the ranks as a volunteer firefighter, and was a volunteer at Ground Zero following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Cornfield, who is survived by his wife, Donna, and two children, Danny and Paige, spent his summers as a lifeguard in Long Beach, N.Y. An experienced fisherman, he competed in shark fishing tournaments.


Kelly Poynton (1997-99) -- Poynton, the softball program's top pitcher during the NCAA Division II era, led UAlbany to the 1999 ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship and 1998 New England Collegiate Conference title. She finished her career with a 40-13 record, 15 shutouts, 399 strikeouts, 46 complete games and a 1.60 earned run average.

In 1999, Poynton was chosen the UAlbany Co-Female Athlete of the Year after earning the ECAC Championship's most valuable player award. She fired a no-hit shutout and struck out 10 in the opening round and went the distance in a 2-1, nine-inning victory over Dowling in the championship game. The right-hander recorded 16 strikeouts in the two-day tournament. Poynton, who averaged 7.72 strikeouts per seven innings, was named All-NECC for the second straight season with a 15-4 record, five shutouts, two saves and a 1.41 ERA. Her 142 strikeouts led the conference. The Great Danes established a then school-record 33-14 mark.

Poynton was named the NECC Pitcher of the Year in 1998 after posting a 17-3 campaign on the mound with nine shutouts, including two no-hitters. She also had a one-hitter against Concordia and threw three two-hit shutouts versus Franklin Pierce, Sacred Heart and Rensselaer. Poynton ranked eighth in strikeouts (164) and 19th in earned run average (1.06) among the NCAA Division II national leaders in leading the Great Danes to a 32-9 record and their first-ever NECC championship and an ECAC Mid-Atlantic tournament berth.

Poynton was voted to the All-Northeast Region, All-ECAC North and All-NECC squads. At one point in her junior season, she threw 42 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. She struck out 10-plus batters seven times, including a career-high 15 against Bridgeport.

As a sophomore, Poynton went 8-6 in the circle with a 2.61 ERA after transferring from Seton Hall University. She led the pitching staff in innings (94), complete games (13) and strikeouts (93). Poynton, who fanned 10 or more on five occasions, fired a pair of three-hitters in NECC victories over Franklin Pierce and Stony Brook. The Great Danes finished 23-15 overall.

A native of Orchard Park, N.Y., Poynton received her undergraduate degree in English with a minor in secondary education. A Dean's List student who was named to the Kappa Delta Phi Honors Society, she has completed some classwork towards a master's in the same discipline. Poynton is currently an English and reading teacher at Coral Springs Charter School in Coral Springs, Fla. She previously coached the school's varsity softball team for three years. Poynton and her fiance Ken McLaughlin are scheduled to be married on February 17, 2008.


Mike Grever (1996-99) -- Grever, a fierce competitor on the gridiron, was one of the top linebackers to ever wear a UAlbany uniform. He helped the Great Danes capture two conference championships on the NCAA Division II level and captained the first Division I-AA (now Football Championship Subdivision) squad to a winning record in 1999.

A 5-foot-11, 215-pound defender, Grever was named the 1999 Football Gazette Division I-AA Non-Scholarship Linebacker of the Year as the Great Danes went 7-2 in their inaugural I-AA campaign. He was chosen the Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year when he totaled 88 tackles, three interceptions, five pass break-ups and two blocked kicks. A first-team All-NEC selection and team MVP, Grever was also voted to the Football Gazette All-America first team. UAlbany ranked 15th nationally in scoring defense at 17.3 points per game.

A native of Syosset, N.Y., Grever was a key figure in UAlbany winning its second consecutive Eastern Football Conference championship with a 10-1 record in 1998. He made 16 tackles in the EFC title game, a come-from-behind 25-24 victory over American International at University Field. Grever was tabbed the Football Gazette Division II Non-Scholarship Linebacker of the Year. He also earned Daktronics All-Northeast Region second team, first-team All-ECAC-North and first-team All-EFC recognition. Grever made 129 tackles, the first UAlbany defender to record 120-plus in back-to-back seasons since 1982, as the defense ranked in the top 10 nationally in points allowed and pass efficiency against. He added six pass break-ups and three interceptions.

Grever, who was a fullback as a freshman, made a successful transition to defense in 1997, when he helped the Great Danes set a school standard with an 11-1 record. He recorded 12 tackles, including 10 unassisted, and picked off a pass in the last minute to preserve a 27-20 win at American International for the program's first Eastern Football Conference championship. Grever, who accounted for 122 tackles, three interceptions, three sacks and two fumble recoveries, was named to the All-ECAC-North and All-EFC squads. He had a career-high 17 tackles in a 42-16 triumph over conference opponent Stony Brook.

Grever finished his collegiate career as the program's all-time tackles leader with 351 (now No. 3 on the career list) and tied for ninth in career interceptions (9). He posted double-figure tackles in 24 games. Grever was also a member of the school's club ice hockey team.

Grever earned his undergraduate degree in a dual major of English and education. He became a graduate assistant football coach at Springfield College in Massachusetts, where he received a master's in physical education. He coached the linebackers and defensive ends for three seasons. From 2003-06, Grever was a physical education teacher at Simsbury (Conn.) High School. He also served as the football program's defensive coordinator and head coach of the junior varsity ice hockey team. He is currently running a family-owned business in Jackson Heights, N.Y., but plans to get back into coaching on the high school level.

Laura Cummings Named America East Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Cambridge, Mass. – University at Albany’s Laura Cummings has been named the America East Conference Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.

Cummings, a junior transfer from the University of North Carolina, led UAlbany to a ninth-place finish at Iona’s 13th Annual Br. John "Paddy" Doyle Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday, Sept. 22. Cummings completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 22:20.4 to place eleventh individually. Cummings, who placed first at the Monmouth Cross Country Kick-Off on Sept. 1 and second at Stony Brook’s Seawolves Invitational on Sept. 7, has led the Great Danes to top-10 finishes in all three meets this season.

UAlbany (7-3) went undefeated in two games last week. The Great Danes defeated Colgate, 6-1, on the road on Wednesday before claiming a 3-0 win over Holy Cross at home on Saturday. Freshman midfielder Sam Daly recorded three goals and one assist in the two games en route to being named the America East Conference Rookie of the Week.

The Great Danes kick off conference play this weekend, visiting Maine on Friday before hosting non-conference opponent Massachusetts on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. on Alumni Turf Field.

UAlbany Volleyball Sweeps Pennsylvania and Quinnipiac at Sheraton-Penn Invitational

Philadelphia, Pa. – Freshman outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey recorded kill-dig double-doubles in both matches to lead UAlbany volleyball to a sweep of Pennsylvania and Quinnipiac on the second day of the Sheraton-Penn Invitational at the Palestra on Sunday afternoon. The Great Danes, who have now won eight straight matches, defeated the host Quakers, 3-1, with scores of 30-23, 30-28, 27-30 and 30-27, before defeating Quinnipiac, 3-0, with game scores of 30-13, 30-16 and 30-17.

Cowdrey notched her seventh double-double of the season with a 15-kill, 16-dig performance against Penn. Senior middle blocker Ashley Crenshaw led all players with 19 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Valerie Sourbeer recorded a double-double of her own with 14 kills and 13 digs. Freshman setter Brooke Stanley had a match-high 48 assists to go along with 11 digs, while freshman libero Tawny Dahmes added a match and career-high 26 digs.

Julia Swanson led Pennsylvania (4-5) with 18 kills and 12 digs while Kathryn Turner added 16 kills and three block assists. Linda Zhang finished with 46 assists to go along with 13 digs while Madison Wojciechowski led the Quakers defensively with 17 digs.

Cowdrey recorded her third consecutive double-double in the three-game sweep of Quinnipiac, tallying a match-high 14 kills and 15 digs. Crenshaw added 10 kills for the Great Danes while sophomore outside hitter Kate Eckhardt added 10 digs defensively for UAlbany.

Quinnipiac (1-13) was led by Michelle Vasapoli, who finished with six kills. Erin Overdevest led the Bobcats defensively with eight digs, while Jenna Benigno had 11 assists to go along with four kills, six digs and two total blocks.

UAlbany (10-5) will open up America East Conference play on Friday, Sept. 28 against Hartford at 7 p.. at University Gymnasium.

Football Plays Before Largest Crowd in Program's History in 35-14 Loss at No. 2 Montana

Missoula, Mont. – Cole Bergquist passed for two touchdowns and ran for another score in leading Montana, the nation's second-ranked team, to a 35-14 victory over UAlbany before 23,097 fans on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

Bergquist, who passed for 283 yards and ran for 89 more, broke open a tight game in the third quarter when he scored on a 55-yard option run over left tackle for a 21-7 lead. He then engineered a 76-yard march in the fourth quarter, including a 24-yard middle screen pass into UAlbany territory. Lex Hilliard, who rushed for 136 yards and two TDs, later rumbled 26 yards to paydirt with 9:53 to play.

UAlbany (1-3) closed the gap by answering with a 10-play scoring drive. Vinny Esposito, who completed 20 of 40 passes for 273 yards, the seventh-best total in school history, fired a 23-yard touchdown strike to Jason Smith. The Great Danes, who playing before the largest crowd in the program's history, then recovered an on-side kick. But cornerback Jeremy Pate intercepted Esposito's pass to the sideline at the Grizzlies' 16 to end the threat. Bergquist added a 30-yard touchdown throw with 1:51 remaining to complete the scoring. Montana (3-0) could move to the top of the rankings as Appalachian State was beaten earlier in the day.

"They are an excellent team,” said UAlbany head coach Bob Ford, whose team lost All-America linebacker Colin Disch to a knee sprain on the second play of the game. “They are very hard to defend because they can run inside and outside and spread the ball with that quarterback to a multitude of receivers. We tried to do some (different) things as the underdog, but they gradually wore us down. We played as hard as we could and their fans appreciated the effort with an ovation as we left the field."

UAlbany came to play in the first quarter against the nationally-ranked Grizzlies. Esposito hooked up with Daniel Bocanegra on a 46-yard flea-flicker on the Great Danes' second offensive play, but Jason Fralicker missed a 31-yard field goal to the left of the upright.

Montana took a 7-0 lead on its third series, when Bergquist led a three-play, 58-yard drive. Berguqist, a 6-foot-2 junior, connected with wide receiver Eric Allen on a 38-yard play down the middle of the defense. He fired a 12-yard scoring pass to Ryan Bagley with 4:35 left in the period.

"They have great athletic talent, especially (Kroy) Biermann coming off the edge,” Esposito said. “They really play together, come after you wave after wave, and swarm to the football. It came down to situations where they made the big play."

The Great Danes stopped punter Tyson Johnson on a fourth-down run off a fake at midfield to set up their touchdown midway through the second quarter. The scoring march was kept alive when Montana's Severin Campbell was called for a roughing-the-punter penalty. Esposito then flipped a 22-yard pass to Colin Simmons in the left flat to set up first-and- goal at the Grizzlies 2. Omar Johnson would score from one yard out over left tackle on fourth down.

After Bergquist threw an interception inside the UAlbany five-yard line, the Montana signal-caller led his team on a short six-play drive that put his team ahead 14-7 with 1:49 left before halftime. Hilliard reached the end zone on a one-yard blast over the right side.

"As a senior, I really looked forward to playing in this game,” said Wall, who recovered the on-side kick and also had a 64-yard quick kick on special teams. “The non-league games are just as important, but this first part (of the schedule) has helped us find our identity. We kept playing today no matter what happened. I have confidence in our team."

Nicole Savage Scores Gamewinner to Lead #18 UAlbany to a 3-0 Win Over Holy Cross

Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Nicole Savage scored the gamewinning goal with 8:43 left in the first half to lead #18 UAlbany to a 3-0 win over Holy Cross in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman midfielder Sam Daly crossed the ball from the left side of the circle to Savage, who hit the top left corner of the goal over Holy Cross goalkeeper Erin Singleton. Daly doubled the advantage for the Great Danes with 3:55 remaining off an assist from Michele Polizois on a penalty corner.

Senior midfielder Michelle Simpson struck for UAlbany just a minute and a half into the second period, taking a fast break and dribbling past Singleton to the cage.

UAlbany outshot Holy Cross 23-5 and also held a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners. Ashley Ross recorded three saves in the cage, earning her third shutout of the season for the Great Danes while Singleton and Kelly Casey combined for seven saves for Holy Cross (2-6).

UAlbany (6-3) have a seven-day break before opening up America East Conference play at Maine on Saturday, Sept. 29.

Amanda Cowdrey Leads UAlbany to Sixth-Straight Win, Defeating Temple 3-2

Philadelphia, Pa. – Freshman outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a team-high 16 kills to go along with 14 digs to lead UAlbany to its sixth consecutive victory, as the Great Danes defeated Temple, 3-2, at the Sheraton/Penn Classic on Saturday afternoon. UAlbany won by scores of 24-30, 30-17, 23-30, 30-26 and 15-5.

Senior middle blocker Ashley Crenshaw also finished with double-digit kill totals, recording 13 kills to go along with two service aces, five digs and three block assists. Junior middle blocker Kamisha Kellam added 10 kills and four total blocks. Freshman libero Tawny Dahmes led the team defensively with 21 digs while freshman setter Brooke Stanley tallied 40 assists, six digs, three block assists, three service aces and four kills.

Temple (4-11) was led by Yun Yi Zhang, who finished with a match-high 18 kills and 16 digs. Yue Liu added a double-double of her own with 13 kills and 15 digs while Patricia Vernon added 11 kills. Ariel Pierre also recorded a double-double of the assist-dig variety, as she tallied a match-high 41 assists and 13 digs, to go along with five service aces.

UAlbany (8-5) will continue play at the Sheraton/Penn Classic on Sunday, taking on the host Quakers at 11 a.m. and Quinnipiac at 1 p.m.

Ma Leads UAlbany Tennis to 7-0 Sweep of Monmouth

Albany, N.Y. – Susan Ma led the UAlbany women’s tennis team to a 7-0 victory over Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at University Courts. Ma won her number one singles match in straight sets over Kaitlin Gallagher (6-0, 6-1) and then paired up with Kim Weltman for an 8-1 win over Gallagher and Sarah Ragan.

In other singles action, Weltman defeated Ragan (6-1, 6-0), Amanda Hall earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Katie Tierney, Aimee Kern defeated Kristen Hoffman (6-0, 6-3), Caitlin Crowley beat Dian Washer (6-0, 6-3), and Melissa Coughlin won straight sets over Christine Cella (6-1, 6-1).

At second doubles, Crowley and Hall defeated Tierney and Washer (8-2) and Kern and Coughlin beat Hoffman and Kelly Friedrich (8-6).

UAlbany (1-0) will host Stony Brook on Friday and will take part in the Spartan Invitational next weekend in East Lansing, Mich.
