University of Albany's Laine Mackey Leads Women's Tennis to 5-2 Road Victory Against St. Bonaventure - UAlbany Sports 2010

St. Bonaventure, N.Y. - Laine Mackey defeated St. Bonaventure's Maria Barousse at No. 2 singles, while also teaming up with Aubrey Brooks for a doubles win to lead UAlbany to a 5-2 win over the Bonnies in non-conference tennis action on Saturday afternoon.

St. Bonaventure won the top singles match, as Barousse and teammate Amanda Pallikunnel defeated Susan Ma and Livia Gherman, 8-7 (4). UAlbany claimed victories at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the doubles point for the Great Danes. Mackey and Brooks defeated Manuela Marin and Kalia Garcia Rojas, 8-4, while Sarah Iannone and Caitlin Crowley posted an 8-1 win over Kathryn Kvas and Riley Archer.

UAlbany was victorious in four singles matches, led at the top position by Gherman, who defeated Marin, 7-5, 5-7, 10-8. Mackey recorded a 6-4, 7-5 win in her match, while Brooks and Iannone also notched singles victories for the Great Danes. Both players defeated their opponents by scores of 6-0, 6-1. St. Bonaventure's Kvas defeated Ma at No. 3 singles, posting a 6-0, 6-2 victory, while Crowley fell to Pallikunnel, 6-4, 6-4 at the forth singles spot.

UAlbany will return to action on the road on Friday, Feb. 5, visiting Long Island for a non-conference match starting at 7 p.m.

Albany, N.Y. - Susan Ma recorded a 3-6, 6-0, 10-1 win at top singles and combined with Livia Gherman for an 8-1 win at number one doubles to lead UAlbany to a 7-0 win over Union in non-conference tennis action at University Courts.

Ma defeated Hallie Mabrey in her singles match, while Gherman competed at number two singles, defeating Elise Malkin, 6-1, 6-0. Laine Mackey played in the third singles slot, recording a 6-0, 6-3 win over Brittany Gilbert. Caitlin Crowley recorded a 6-0, 6-4 win over Andria Coopersmith, while Aubrey Brooks defeated Dee Dee Gaudian, 6-2, 6-1, at fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Freshman Sarah Iannone swept Kristen Ryan in the final singles spot, 6-0, 6-0.

Crowley and Brooks posted an 8-2 win over Gaudian and Gilbert at number two doubles, while Mackey teamed up with Melissa Coughlin in the third doubles spot to win an 8-3 decision over Union's Ryan and Gilbert.

The Great Danes will return to action over the weekend at Marist's Fall Invitational.

Albany, N.Y. – Senior Kim Weltman posted a 6-0, 6-0 singles win over Emily Zampello and teamed with Aubrey Brooks for an 8-3 doubles win to lead UAlbany to a 7-0 sweep of Marist in non-conference tennis action at the UAlbany Bubble on Sunday afternoon.

Susan Ma led the team at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 win over Marist’s Erin McCarthy. Sophomore Laine Mackey took over the No. 3 singles spot and recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Mirelva Colon. Holly Smith defeated Kayla O’Donovan, 6-0, 6-2 at the fourth singles position, while Melissa Coughlin defeated the Red Foxes’ Jeannie Lukin, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Caitlin Crowley wrapped up the singles points for the Great Danes with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Joanna Macaluso.

Smith and Charlotte Tatler swept Zampello and O’Donovan, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles, while Weltman and Brooks defeated Lukin and Macaluso at the third doubles spot. Ma and Mackey teamed up for an 8-4 victory over Marist’s McCarthy and Colon at the top position.

Albany, N.Y. – Charlotte Tatler recorded a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Emma Rudnik at No. 3 singles and teamed with Holly Smith to record an 8-1 win over Rudnik and Emily Maer in leading UAlbany to a 7-0 win over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at the UAlbany Bubble. The Great Danes then traveled to Massachusetts on Sunday, falling to the Minutewomen 5-2.

In Saturday’s match against the Crusaders, UAlbany earned the doubles points with three straight victories. Sophomores Susan Ma and Laine Mackey took an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles over Kristen Miehl and Carolyn Chandlay. Tatler and Smith combined for the second doubles win, while Kim Weltman and Aubrey Brooks teamed up for an 8-0 sweep of Kathryn Wilkie and Paige Brown at the third position.

Ma posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Miehl at No. 1 singles, while Weltman defeated Maer, 6-0, 6-2 at the second position. Mackey dropped just one set against Chandlay at No. 4 singles, winning with scores of 6-1, 6-0. Smith defeated Hailee Lange, 6-2, 6-1, while Melissa Coughlin wrapped up the singles victories with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ivette Knopoch at No. 6.

The Great Danes posted two singles wins at Massachusetts on Sunday, with Mackey and Brooks coming away with victories. Mackey defeated Kaitlyn Carpenter at the fourth position, 6-4, 7-5, while Brooks recorded a 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 win over Lauren Mackay at No. 6 singles. The Minutewomen swept the rest of the points, despite Tatler forcing a third set against Maude Leclyuse, falling 6-4 in the first set and recording a 6-0 second before falling, 6-4, in the final. Weltman also went three sets at No. 2 singles against Candynce Boney, dropping a 6-2 first set and claiming a 6-3 win in the second. Boney earned the point for the Minutewomen with a 6-2 final set.

Sophomore Susan Ma defeated Ashley Rissolo at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, while senior Kim Weltman posted a 6-1, 6-1 win against Ayushi Sinha at the second singles spot. Laine Mackey and Aubrey Brooks helped complete the singles sweeps with victories at the No. 4 and No. 6 slots, respectively. Mackey recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win over the Friars’ Mel Albert while Brooks defeated Ally Wegner 6-1, 6-0.

Albany, N.Y. – Kim Weltman won both of her matches at No. 2 singles, while also teaming up with Aubrey Brooks for a doubles win to lead UAlbany to season-opening wins over Fairfield at Long Island in tennis action over the weekend. The Great Danes defeated the Stags, 5-1, on Friday evening, before posting a 6-1 win over Long Island at the UAlbany Bubble on Saturday afternoon.

UAlbany and Fairfield competed in singles only on Friday, with the Great Danes claiming all but one victory in a match that started at 8 p.m. Sophomore Susan Ma won her first match at No. 1 singles, defeating Kristen Liu, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Weltman lost just one set at the second singles position, posting a 6-1, 6-0 win over Fairfield’s Dana Postupack. Sophomore Charlotte Tatler was victorious at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Paulina Rys. Laine Mackey and Holly Smith posted victories for UAlbany at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Mackey defeated Michaela Cerrone, 6-2, 6-0, while Smith recorded a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Fairfield’s Alyssa Ruiz. In the first home match of the spring, the Great Danes conceded one doubles match and one singles match in the UAlbany Bubble. Tatler claimed a 6-5 default win over Stephanie Elie and Mackey posted a 6-1, 6-7 (6), 3-1 win against Liliana Cortes. Smith defeated Amy Hostosuji, 6-2, 6-0, while Brooks recorded a 7-5, 0-2 default win against Dara Lahens in the final two singles spots. UAlbany Tennis Competes at First Day of Virginia Tech's Hokie Invitational

Blacksburg, Va. – Freshman Holly Smith defeated Radford’s Emerald Lauzon, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, to lead UAlbany on the first day of play at Virginia Tech’s 15th Annual Hokie Fall Invitational at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

Smith advanced to the second round of play and will take on Liberty’s Fabiana Gouveia on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Senior Charlotte Tatler also advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Murray State’s Katelyn Fulcher in Flight D competition. Junior Kim Weltman will play in the consolation round of the Flight A competition after dropping a 6-2, 6-4 match to Radford’s Petra Dajevic on Friday. In the Great Danes’ final singles match of the day, sophomore Susan Ma fell to Virginia Tech’s Martha Blakely, 6-3, 6-1.

UAlbany Tennis Posts 9-4 Record at Sacred Heart Doubles Tournament

Fairfield, Conn. – Sophomore Charlotte Tatler and freshman Holly Smith went undefeated in five doubles matches to lead UAlbany to a 9-4 record at the Sacred Heart doubles tournament on Sunday afternoon. Kim Weltman and Aubrey Brooks posted a 2-2 record while Caitlin Crowley and Melissa Coughlin also teamed up for a 2-2 record in the tournament.

Tatler and Smith won the second flight of competition. The duo posted 8-3 wins over Katherine Francazio and Valeria Couto Cuervo of Bryant and Elizabeth Harrington and Ashley Amalfe of Sacred Heart. They also defeated Sacred Heart’s Delaney Dowling and Mandy Finkelstein, 8-2, and recorded an 8-4 win over Alexa Gregory and BreAnn Chung of Connecticut. The pair teamed up for an 8-6 victory over Jen Cusak and Ayushi Sinha of Providence to seal the Flight Two victory.

Weltman and Brooks posted an 8-3 win over Chelsea Downing and Emaz Czarnecki of Bryant and were victorious over Kate Donnelly and Nicole Betz of Sacred Heart with a score of 8-2. Crowley and Coughlin defeated Courtney Fuller and Liz Gillis of Providence, 8-6, and earned a 4-0 default victory over a Bryant duo.

The UAlbany tennis team will resume its fall season at the Eastern Championships, hosted by Army, on Sept. 26-28.

UAlbany Tennis Earns America East Coaching Staff of the Year Honors

Albany, N.Y. – The University at Albany women’s tennis program, led by second-year head coach Elissa Kinard, earned the America East Conference Coaching Staff of the Year award, as announced by the conference office on Thursday afternoon.

Kinard led the Great Danes to a program-record 18 wins this season. Kinard is assisted by former UAlbany student-athlete Kim Westcott, in her first season coaching the Great Danes. UAlbany won six straight matches during the season, led by junior Charlotte Tatler, who finished with a 24-5 record at No. 4 singles. The Great Danes wrapped up the 2008 season with a 4-0 sweep of Hartford in the America East Conference Tournament.

UAlbany Tennis Wraps Up America East Tournament Play With Win Over Hartford

New Haven, Conn. – Charlotte Tatler and Kim Weltman each recorded straight-set victories in singles competition and teamed up for a victory at No. 3 doubles to lead fifth-seeded UAlbany to a 4-0 win over No. 6 Hartford in the consolation round of the America East Conference Women’s Tennis Championship on Saturday afternoon at Yale Tennis Center. The match ended after UAlbany achieved the four points needed to determine the winner.

Weltman recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hartford’s Nikki Haynal at No. 3 singles while Tatler defeated Hali Dorfman, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 position. The two teamed up to post an 8-0 victory over Jessica Ruggles and Michelle Tafur in doubles action.

UAlbany’s Aimee Kern and Susan Ma defeated Raquel Casino and Kasey Michaels, 8-1, at the top doubles spot, while Amanda Hall and teammate Laine Mackey defeated Haynal and Dorfman, 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles match. Hall recorded a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Tafur at No. 6 singles to win the final point needed for the Great Danes to secure the match win.

UAlbany finishes the season with an 18-7 record in match play, setting a new program record for wins.

The pair posted an 8-0 victory over Gulay Ozdemir and partner Michele Tafur. Aimee Kern and Susan Ma combined for an 8-0 sweep of Raquel Casino and Kasey Michels at the top doubles spot. Kern recorded a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Casino at No. 1 singles while Ma posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Michels at the second singles position.

Laine Mackey also recorded a singles victory for UAlbany, defeating Tafur, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Amanda Hall swept Ozdemir, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles and teamed with Mackey to defeat Haynal and Ruggles, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles.

UAlbany will return to action on Friday, as they travel to New Haven, Conn. for the America East Conference Championship at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on the campus of Yale University.

UAlbany Tennis Sweeps Sacred Heart, 7-0, for 15th Win of Season

Albany, N.Y. – Senior Aimee Kern won in straight sets at first singles and teamed for a doubles victory to lead UAlbany to a 7-0 sweep of Sacred Heart on Sunday, March 30 at the Bubble.

Kern topped Julianne Kasinow at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-0 for her 12th singles win of the season. She later teamed with freshman Susan Ma at first doubles to defeat Darcy Demers and Nicole Betz, 8-2. Ma was victorious in three sets at No. 2 singles over Demers, registering scores of 6-0, 2-6 and 10-7.

At third singles, junior Kim Weltman beat Betz in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-2. The tandem of Weltman and Charlotte Tatler won at No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-1 over Mandy Finkelstein and Britany Price. Tatler won her match at fourth singles over Elizabeth Harrington by a score of 6-1 in each set.

Freshman Laine Mackey defeated Jessica Schnell, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 singles, while senior Amanda Hall beat Ashley Amalfe at sixth singles, 6-0 and 6-4. The duo teamed for an 8-5 win at second doubles over Amalfe and Kasinow.

UAlbany (15-2) returns to action on Saturday, April 5 at Stony Brook at 1:00 p.m.

UAlbany Tennis Team Breaks Division I Program Record With 12th Win

Hamilton, N.Y. – The UAlbany tennis team recorded a 5-2 win over Colgate in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon, giving the Great Danes a 12-2 record for the season and breaking the Division I program record for single season wins. UAlbany had won 11 matches on two occasions, most recently in 1999-00, the first season at the Division I level.

UAlbany was led by freshman Laine Mackey, whose 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 win over Erin Fenn at No. 5 singles solidified the match win for the Great Danes. Mackey also combined with Amanda Hall for an 8-2 win over Cameron Williams and Stephanie Bender at second doubles. Freshman Susan Ma claimed a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Samantha Inacker at No. 2 singles, while Kim Weltman posted a 6-0, 6-4 victory against the Raiders’ Isabel Riemer at the third singles position. Charlotte Tatler and Amanda Hall also posted singles wins for the Great Danes, defeating Cameron Williams (6-4, 6-2) and Jackie Stimmel (2-6, 6-3, 6-2), respectively.

Colgate received a singles win from Elise Derose, who defeated Aimee Kern, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 1 singles position. Derose and Inacker defeated Kern and Ma at top doubles, 8-5, while Riemer and Fenn posted an 8-5 victory over Weltman and Tatler at No. 3 doubles.

UAlbany will return to action on Friday, March 14 at St. Peter's.

Albany, N.Y. – The UAlbany tennis team defeated Marist 6-1 in non-conference action on Friday, March 7 at The Bubble to improve to 11-2 on the season. The Great Danes won five of six singles matches in straight sets.

Freshman Susan Ma, the reigning America East Conference performer of the week, won her eighth straight match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Erin Godly at No. 2 singles. Marist’s Christine Ong topped Aimee Kern topped 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at first singles. At No. 3 singles, junior Kim Weltman won in straight sets over Cassie Strange by the scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Freshman Charlotte Tatler picked up her 10th singles win of the spring season with a 6-2, 6-1 at fourth singles against Alexa Strange. Laine Mackey topped Emily Zampello 6-0 in the first set and 6-1 in second set at No. 5 singles, while senior Amanda Hall won at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Retta Byron.

In doubles play, Mackey and Hall were victorious over Ong and Cassie Strange, 8-5, at the No. 2 spot. At third doubles, Weltman teamed with Caitlin Crowley to defeat Zampello and Natalie Fouche 8-0. Godly and Alexa Strange registered an 8-5 win at first doubles over the UAlbany tandem of Kern and Ma.

UAlbany’s Susan Ma Named America East Tennis Performer of the Week

Cambridge, Mass. – University at Albany’s Susan Ma has been named the America East Conference Tennis Performer of the Week, as announced today by the conference office.

Ma, a freshman from Parkville, Mo., has posted a 9-1 record in singles play and a 7-2 doubles record to start the spring season, playing all of her singles matches at the No. 2 position. Her only loss of the spring came in a 6-7 (4-7), 2-6 loss in a dual match versus Massachusetts. Ma recorded one of two singles victories for UAlbany against Georgetown, coming away with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win, and posted a 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 win in conference play against UMBC. Ma has teamed up with Aimee Kern in the spring for doubles play, recording key victories in the No. 1 doubles spot against Providence (8-5), Georgetown (8-1) and George Mason (8-2).

Fairfax, Va. – The UAlbany tennis team registered four straight-set wins in singles action for a 7-0 sweep of George Mason on Sunday, March 2 at the Robinson Field tennis courts.

At first singles, Aimee Kern dropped the opening set to Lindsay Gray 6-4, but rebounded to win the final two sets 6-4 and 11-9. Freshman Susan Ma lost the first set at second singles to Stacey Berlinger 6-4, but came back to win the second and third sets, 6-2 and 10-7. The pair won their No. 1 doubles match over Gray and Berlinger, 8-2.

Junior Kim Weltman defeated Sarah Dieffenbach in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, at third singles and freshman Charlotte Tatler topped Julia Moscato at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2. The duo combined to defeat Aryn Christman and Stephanie Longueira at third doubles 8-1.

At No. 5 singles, Laine Mackey beat Christman in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Amanda Hall was victorious over Alicia Van Zandt at sixth singles by the scores of 6-2 and 6-1. The tandem later defeated Moscato and Van Zandt at third doubles, 8-1.

UAlbany (10-2) returns to the courts on Friday, March 7 at home against Marist.

UAlbany Softball Wins Two Games on Second Day of Stetson Invitational

DeLand, Fla. – Leah McIntosh recorded her second win of the season and Brittany Rose claimed her first victory as a collegian to help lead the UAlbany softball team to two wins on the second day of the Stetson Invitational at Patricia Wilson Field. The Great Danes defeated Western Michigan, 8-1, earlier in the day before posting a 1-0 victory over Stetson in the nightcap.

Rose tossed a complete game for the Great Danes against Western Michigan (5-4), fanning three and allowing just four hits. The Broncos, who defeated UAlbany in extra innings on Friday, scored their lone run of the game in the fifth inning on a home run by freshman right fielder Michelle Bendewald.

UAlbany had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as freshman Gina Mason drove in two runs on a double to left centerfield. The Great Danes tacked on two more runs in the third on a two-run blast by third baseman Meagan Butsch. UAlbany then had back-to-back singles in the fourth inning before Nicole Kothe drove a triple into right field to score Amber Maisonet and Kristine Bill. The Great Danes added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, as Jessica Bergin slammed her first career homer down the left field line.

In the second game of the day, the score remained knotted at 0-0 through six innings before UAlbany could break the scoring drought in the top of the seventh. Maisonet singled to left, scoring pinch runner Tara Dalton for the lone run of the game. McIntosh won the pitchers duel, striking out 11 while allowing just two hits. Junior Erica Demers took the loss for Stetson (13-8), fanning four UAlbany batters.

UAlbany, with a 3-1 record in the tournament, will advance to the championship game, taking place no Sunday at 12 p.m.

UAlbany Tennis Defeats Niagara, 6-1, For Ninth Straight Win

North Tonawanda, N.Y. – The UAlbany tennis team defeated Niagara, 6-1, in non-conference action to remain undefeated on Friday, Feb. 22 at the Sportsplex in North Tonawanda, N.Y. Laine Mackey and Amanda Hall led the Great Danes, pairing up for a doubles win and posting two singles victories.

Mackey and Hall defeated Raquel Solis and Emma Cunnington, 8-3 at second doubles. Mackey defeated Victoria Tiso, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 singles action while Hall recorded a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Kim Roberts at the No. 6 position. Kim Weltman teamed up with Charlotte Tatler to defeat Tiso and Roberts, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles, while Aimee Kern and Susan Ma completed the sweep of double’s action with an 8-5 victory over Vanja Lakic and Shella Dargout.

Weltman improved to 7-0 at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Lakic while Tatler moved to 8-0 at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Cunnington. Ma registered the Great Danes’ fifth singles win with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Dargout. Solis picked up the Purple Eagles’ lone win at No. 1 singles defeating Kern 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 10-7.

Albany, N.Y. – The UAlbany tennis team swept Providence, 7-0, in non-conference action to remain undefeated on Saturday afternoon at The Bubble. Aimee Kern and Susan Ma led the Great Danes, pairing up for a doubles win and posting two singles victories.

Kern and Ma defeated the Friars’ Avery Gibson and Dara Hawkins-Hodgson, 8-5 to start the match. Kern later defeated Gibson, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles action while Ma posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Hawkins-Hodgson at the No. 2 position. Laine Mackey teamed up with Amanda Hall and defeated Jenn Cusack and Meghan Gilroy, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles, while Kim Weltman and Charlotte Tatler finished the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Ayushi Sinha and Kim Betzner.

Weltman recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win over Cusack at No. 3 singles while Tatler posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Sinha. Mackey and Hall also had wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Mackey finished with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kate Lyons while Hall recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Gilroy.
