University of Albany Indoor Track & Field Teams Post 12 IC4A and ECAC Marks and Win Three Events at Penn State - UAlbany Sports 2010

University Park, Pa. - John Moore shattered the program standard in the men's 1,000-meter run and ran the fastest split for the winning 4x800-meter relay squad which set a meet record to lead a strong outing for the UAlbany indoor track and field teams at the Penn State Northeast Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 16. Fey Adaramola met two ECAC marks for the second straight meet to pace the women's squad.

The Great Danes eclipsed 12 IC4A and ECAC marks, won three events and set three meet records at a competition comprised of mostly institutions from the Big 10 and Big East conferences. The men's field also featured three reigning conference champions in UAlbany, Saint Francis, Pa. and Cornell, while the women's side was highlighted by two of the nation's top-25 teams in 10th-ranked Penn State and 22nd-ranked West Virginia.

Led by Moore, the men's middle-distance group saw five Great Danes qualify for the IC4A championship in an individual event. Moore surpassed the meet record in the 1,000 for clocking in a third-place time of 2:22.36, beating out the old program standard of 2:24.86 which was registered by teammate Tyler Fogarty at last year's America East championship meet. Fogarty placed sixth in the event in 2:26.26, while Sean Halpin was eighth in 2:26.87. Fogarty and Halpin also qualified for IC4As with their respective times.

Paul Lagno and Nick Santos rounded out the list of Great Dane men in the middle-distance group to qualify for the IC4A meet in March. Lagno placed fourth in the Mile in 4:13.60, while Santos was eighth in the 800 for finishing in 1:54.48. Laura Cummings led all women's middle-distance runners with a seventh-place time of 5:00.89 in the Mile, which was 1.88 seconds short of the ECAC standard.

Adaramola led all women's sprinters, finishing second overall and first among the collegians in the 60-meter dash for crossing the tape in 7.61. The senior captain only finished behind Natasha Hastings, who won two gold medals as a member of the United States' 4x400-meter relay team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin. Sheena Simpkins and Sherez Mohamed fell just shy of an ECAC qualifying time in the 500- and 400-meter dash events, respectively. Simpkins, a transfer from Mount Saint Mary's where she was two-time All-Northeast Conference selection in the 500, placed seventh in the event in 1:16.29. Mohamed finished 16th in the 400 for navigating the track in 58.69.

Alie Beauvais and Jonathan Santana each qualified for the IC4A meet to highlight all men's sprinters. Beauvais was second in the 500 with a time of 1:03.34. Santana finished ninth in the event with a mark of 1:04.67.

Luke Schoen and Wilfredo de Jesus Elias led all UAlbany field eventers with winning marks in the men's pole vault and weight throw, respectively, while also qualifying for IC4As in the process. Schoen set a meet record for clearing 16-feet, 8.75-inches, while de Jesus Elias' winning mark was 59-7.75.

Rounding out the list of top field performers were Valete Graham and Tiffany Sprenkels, who both fell less than a foot short of the IC4A and ECAC marks with sixth-place finishes in the men's and women's triple jump. Graham leaped 46-10.75, while Sprenkels registered a mark of 38-7.75.

Three relay teams also qualified for IC4A and ECAC postseason competition, which was highlighted by the men's 4x800-meter relay consisting of Halpin, Santos, Moore and Fogarty. The foursome's winning time of 7:33.97 was a meet record. Santana, Jeffery Barnes, Ebube Abara and Beauvais combined for a fifth-place time of 3:15.49 in the men's 4x400, while Mohamed, Simpkins, Tierra Chavis and Adaramola posted an eighth-place mark of 3:51.54 in the event on the women's side.

The UAlbany indoor track and field teams will return to action on Friday, Jan. 22 when they host the 8th Annual Great Dane Classic at the New York City Armory Track and Field Center beginning at 12:30 p.m. Last year, UAlbany swept the team titles for the first time ever after combining to break seven school records.
