University of Albany's Corrin Conroy Takes Individual Title and Leads Golf to America East Championship - UAlbany Sports 2009

Loudonville, N.Y. – Sophomore Corrin Conroy eagled the par-5 17th hole and finished with a 1-over score of 73 on the second day of play to claim the individual medalist title and lead UAlbany to the 2009 America East Conference Women’s Golf Championship. It is the Great Danes’ third team title and second consecutive.

Conroy had a two-day total of 155 to take the individual title, defeating second-place Ana Johnson of Boston University by four strokes. Conroy broke her own school record with a low score of 73 over 18 holes, after setting the mark at 75 at Rutgers in the fall.

“I just wanted my team to win, so I wanted to do whatever it took to get us there,” said Conroy, who is now one of five players in program history to record an eagle. “It feels good to win, but it’s great to have the team get a second America East Championship under our belts.”

Freshman Stephanie Klein and junior Jessica Signorelli tied for third place individually with a two-day score of 161. Freshman Annemarie Kissane, who led the field after the first day of play, shot an 84 on day two of competition to finish tied for sixth overall with a score of 163. Junior Amanda McPhee rounded out the UAlbany golfers with a ninth-place finish and a score of 169.

“Winning the America East title was our spring goal, and we reached that today,” said UAlbany head coach Richard “Doc” Sauers, who earned his second straight America East Conference Coach of the Year award. “I was very impressed with Corrin’s play today, she exceeded my expectations.”

University of Albany Set to Host America East Conference Golf Championship at Shaker Ridge C.C. - UAlbany Sports 2009

Loudonville, N.Y. – UAlbany will welcome Hartford and Boston University to Shaker Ridge Country Club for the 2009 America East Conference Women’s Golf Championship on April 25-26. The Great Danes, as the reigning conference champions, are hosting the tournament for the first time since 2005.

UAlbany, which claimed the Hartford Invitational title last weekend, is led by freshman Annemarie Kissane, who won medalist honors at Hartford. Kissane averaged a team-low 79.2 in five tournaments in the fall to set a new school record and become the first player in school history to average below an 80. She will play as the No. 2 player behind junior Amanda McPhee, who shared medalist honors with sophomore Corrin Conroy at the championship last season. Conroy, who averaged an 80.1 in the fall, is slated in the No. 3 spot, while freshman Stephanie Klein is fourth. Junior Jessica Signorelli rounds out the five-member team.

The order of play will be based on last year's championship finish, with UAlbany playing each hole first, Hartford second and Boston U. third. The three teams will compete over the par-72, 5,805-yard course in five groups of three. Play will begin on Saturday at 1 p.m., with groups teeing off in 10-minute increments. Day two's pairings will be determined by team and individual rankings after the first 18 holes. Designed by Jim Thomson, Shaker Ridge C.C. opened for play in 1929. From the men’s blue tees, the course has a 71.2 rating and a 129 slope.

West Hartford, Conn. – Freshman Annemarie Kissane (Albany) finished with a two-day score of 159 to finish first and lead the UAlbany golf team to a win at the Hartford Invitational at Rockledge Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon. The Great Danes carded a two-day total of 657 to win the team title.

Kissane, who stood in second place after day one of play, shot an 80 over the final 18 holes to take home the individual title. Sophomore Corrin Conroy carded an 83 over the par-72 course to finish with a two-day score of 161 and finish tied for third. Jessica Signorelli tied for ninth individually after shooting a team-low 77 on day two to finish with a total of 168. Amanda McPhee (17th, 85-89—174) and Stephanie Klein (t18th, 90-85—175) rounded out the UAlbany scorers.

Fairfield finished second in the team scoring with a two-day total of 659, while Sacred Heart took third with a total of 679. Hampton (688), Hartford (694) and Central Connecticut State (720) completed the team standings.

UAlbany will host Hartford and Boston University at Shaker Ridge Country Club on Saturday and Sunday for the America East Conference Championship.

West Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore Corrin Conroy recorded a first-round score of 78 to pace the UAlbany golf team on the first day of play at the Hartford Invitational on Monday at Rockledge Golf Course. The Great Danes are first out of six teams with a total score of 332 after 18 holes.

Freshman Annemarie Kissane (Albany) is second individually, one shot behind Conroy with a score of 79. Junior Amanda McPhee carded an 85 over the first 18 holes to finish the round tied for 11th. Freshman Stephanie Klein stands in a tie for 23rd with a score of 90, while junior Jessica Signorelli is tied for 26th individually with a first-round score of 91.

Sacred Heart and Fairfield are tied for second in the team standings with a total of 337 over the par-72 course. Hampton is fourth (345) followed by Hartford (349) and Central Connecticut State (359).

The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

University of Albany's Amanda McPhee Named America East Conference Women's Golfer of the Week - UAlbany Sports 2009

Cambridge, Mass. – UAlbany’s Amanda McPhee was named the first America East Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for the spring season, as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon.

McPhee finished fourth in the Great Danes’ first competition of the spring, recording a two-day score of 163 at the Fairfield Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. McPhee shot an 83 on the first day and carded a team-low 80 over the second round to lead the Great Danes to a second-place team finish.

UAlbany, the defending America East champions, will return to action on April 20-21 at the Hartford Invitational, held at Rockledge Golf Course. The Great Danes will host the America East Conference Championship at Shaker Ridge Country Club on April 25-26.

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Junior Amanda McPhee finished fourth individually to lead the UAlbany women’s golf team to a second-place finish among five teams at the Fairfield Invitational, held at the Crown Park Golf Course. The Great Danes, which had all five of their golfers improve their scores in the final round, posted a two-day team score of 679 over the par-72, 4,473-yard course.

McPhee shot team-low scores on each day of the tournament to pace the Great Danes. She shot an 83 on the first day, and carded an 80 during the tournament’s final round to finish with a two-day score o 163.

UAlbany’s Annemarie Kissane and Corrin Conroy placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the field of 19 golfers. Kissane shot an 89 on the first day and an 81 over the final 18 holes for a two-day total of 170, while Conroy carded a 90 in the first round and an 81 in the second to finish with a 171. Stephanie Klein recorded a two-day total of 175 which was good for 11th overall, while Jessica Signorelli rounded out the UAlbany golfers with a final mark of 181 to place 14th.

South Carolina State’s Honesty Biggers finished first overall with a two-round score of 152. Fairfield, the host school, took home the team title for posting a score of 659.

University of Albany Women's Golf Takes Home America East Conference Championship: UAlbany Athletics

Simsbury, Conn. – Amanda McPhee and Corrin Conroy finished in a three-way tie for first place to lead the UAlbany women’s golf team to the America East Conference Championship on Sunday, May 4 at the par-72, 5,826-yard Simsbury Farms Golf Course. The Great Danes captured their second conference championship in five years with a two-round score of 657, to top Hartford by one stroke. McPhee and Conroy tied with Hartford’s Juliana Carrillo for top individual honors at 162. UAlbany's Richard "Doc" Sauers was recognized as the conference’s head coach of the year.

McPhee, a sophomore from Winchester, Mass., carded her second consecutive 81 to finish in the tie for first place. Freshman Conroy, who recorded a first-round leading 80 on Saturday, registered an 82 in the final round. The pair is the first set of Great Dane teammates to finish in a first place tie since Jill Friedman and Diane Onofry accomplished the feat in 2005.

Sophomore Jessica Signorelli followed her 83 in the first round with an 82 in round two to finish in fifth place at 165. Senior Maggie Taylert rounded out the top four UAlbany competitors with a two-day score of 168, on rounds of 80 and 88. Junior Sun Hwa Kim finished with a 183.

UAlbany's Maggie Taylert Ties for Tenth Place at Hartford Invitational

West Hartford, Conn. – UAlbany’s Maggie Taylert shot a final-round 83 to finish in a tie for 10th place at the Hartford Women’s Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at Rockledge Golf Course. The Great Danes, who held a one-stroke lead after the opening round, slipped to fifth in the 36-hole team standings.

Taylert carded an 82 in Monday’s first round over the par-72, 5,803-yard layout. She finished nine strokes behind Long Island’s Natalie Desjardins, who won medalist honors by four strokes. UAlbany’s Corrin Conroy, a freshman, placed 13th with rounds of 83 and 84. Jessica Signorelli tied for 18th with a 36-hole score of 173 (82-91).

Sacred Heart captured the team title by 11 shots over runner-up Central Connecticut State. The Pioneers had three of the top-five finishers in the field. Desjardins, the first-day leader with a 77, came back with a 79 over the final 18 holes. Sacred Heart’s Jennifer Tierney was second with scores of 79 and 81. Her teammate Patricia Ali Heyes turned in the best round of the tournament with a three-over 75 on the final day to move up the leader board 13 places into third place.

McPhee Leads UAlbany Women's Golf to First Round Lead at Hartford Invitational

West Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore Amanda McPhee shot an opening round 80 to lead the UAlbany women’s golf team to a first round lead at the Hartford Women’s Invitational on Monday, April 14 at the par 72, 5,803-yard Rockledge Golf Course. The Great Danes shot a first round 327, for a one-stroke lead over Sacred Heart.

McPhee opened with a 41 on the front nine holes and closed out her round with a 39, tied for the third-best back-nine score. Sophomore Jessica Signorelli and senior Maggie Taylert each carded rounds of 82 to finish tied for seventh place. Signorelli shot a 39 on the first nine holes, the second-best score of the day, and registered a 43 on the final nine. Taylert recorded scores of 40 on the front and 42 on the back. Freshman Corrin Conroy finished in a three-way tie for ninth with a first-day score of 83 to round out the Great Danes’ top-four scores. She started with a 46 on the first nine, before shooting a 37, the best score of the 33 competitors, on the final nine.

Junior Sun Hwa Kim recorded scores of 44 and 49 to finish the day at 93, while senior Becky Lukac shot 49 on the front and back for a 98.

The second round of the Hartford Invitational begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Women's Golf Signs Two Student-Athletes During Early Period

Albany, N.Y. - University at Albany women’s golf coach Richard Sauers announced on Thursday, Nov. 29 that two student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play for the Great Danes. Annemarie Kissane from Albany, N.Y. (Albany H.S.) and Stephanie Klein from Thornhill, Ontario (Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto) each made her commitment during the early signing period.

Kissane, a five-year member of the golf team at Albany High and 2007 team MVP, was the recipient of the Northeastern New York PGA Junior Girls Player of the Year award after leading the points list in 2007 and winning the Tour Championship at the Saratoga National Golf Club. In 2006, Kissane placed third at the Srixon Qualifier to qualify to play in the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic, in which she finished in a tie for 13th. She also placed 14th at the Nike Golf Junior at Toftrees conducted by the American Junior Golf Association on June 26-29, 2006. At the 44th Junior Girls Amateur Championship at Drumlins Golf Club in August 2006, Kissane placed second after losing in the finals 2&1. In 2007, Kissane placed 17th at the AJGA’s Fidelity Investments Junior Classic and finished third at the 45th Junior Girls Amateur Championship.

Klein, who had a 92.89 scoring average, finished in the top-5 in all four Canadian Junior Gold Association tournaments she played in 2006. In her first CJGA tournament, Klein placed first at the Orion Securities Junior Classic May 20-21, winning by 10 strokes. She followed that up with a second place finish at the Saab International Juniors Qualifier June 29-30. In her third CJGA tournament, Klein had a three-round score of 269 to place fifth. She capped her 2006 CJGA season with by placing third in the girl’s division at the Nike Golf Jr. Series at Angus Glen Golf Club with a two-round total of 181. In 2007, she shot an 81 at the Elks Country Club in Columbus, Neb. in U.S. Girls’ Junior Sectional Qualifying play and competed in the Royale National Junior Girls’ Championship with a three-round score of 244.

Corrin Conroy Finishes Tied for Eighth at Knights Invitational

Hillsborough, N.J. – Freshman Corrin Conroy shot a final round 79 to lead the UAlbany women’s golf team at Fairleigh Dickinson’s Knights Invitational at Royce Brook Golf Club on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The Great Danes finished in sixth place at the two-day event with a team total of 697.

Conroy finished the invitational in a tie for eighth place with a total score of 165 on rounds of 86 and 79. Conroy was one of only eight competitors to card a sub-80 round. Senior Maggie Taylert finished in a tie for 16th place with a second round 90 to finish at 172. Junior Sun Hwa Kim followed up her opening round 91 with an 88 on the second day for a two-day score of 179 and a 26th place finish. Sophomore Jessica Signorelli tallied an 89 in the final round to finish in a tie for 29th at 181. Senior Rebecca Lukac rounded out the Great Dane competitors with a 94 on Tuesday for a 192 total score.

Host Fairleigh Dickinson captured the top three individual scores to win the team competition with a final score 646. Michele Holzwarth won the individual portion of the invitational with a two-day score of 156, after carding an invitation-best round of 76 on Tuesday.
