Baltimore, Md. - Senior centerfielder Brendan Rowland hit a homerun in both ends of an America East Conference doubleheader to lead UAlbany to a sweep of UMBC on Sunday. The Great Danes cruised to a 13-0 win in game one and held on for a 10-8 victory in the nightcap.
The Great Danes scored runs in all but two innings of the early game, taking a three-run lead in the first inning. UAlbany cruised through the first game, accumulating 13 hits. Rowland's three-run homer to left in the sixth inning gave the Great Danes a 9-0 advantage. Left fielder Pete DiResta drove a homer over the left field fence to cap off a four-run seventh inning for the Great Danes, setting the final score.
Sophomore Zach Kraham pitched a complete-game shutout for UAlbany, striking out three while scattering four hits. Five players recorded multiple hits for the Great Danes, while three players drove in multiple runs. Austin Drewyer took the loss for UMBC in six innings of work.
Rowland hit his second homer of the day in the eighth inning of the nightcap to give UAlbany a 9-5 advantage. UMBC pulled to within 9-8 in the bottom of the frame with three consecutive hits, but reliever Kevin Bartlett entered the game to get the final out for the Great Danes. Freshman Nolan Gaige drove in an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a double into left. After Rick Phillips hit a lead off single in the bottom of the frame, Bartlett got three quick outs to seal up the win and earn his second save of the season.
Greg Lutton earned the win for the Great Danes after two and two thirds innings of actions on the mound. Starter Kasceim Graham went five innings with three strikeouts. Sean Swetnam took the loss on the mound for UMBC (10-27, AE 4-10). Max Himmelstein had three hits, including a solo homer in the fourth, scoring three runs and driving in three more.
