Albany, N.Y. – University at Albany head women’s soccer coach Mary-Frances Monroe was recently called up by the Boston Breakers, one of the seven clubs competing in Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS). Monroe was previously competing with the Boston Aztec Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) team, the reserve squad for the Breakers, earlier this summer.
A former member of the WUSA’s Boston Breakers and last season’s WPSL East Player of the Year, Monroe made her WPS debut in the club’s 1-0 victory over the Washington Freedom on Wednesday, June 24 at Harvard Stadium. She is also slated to be on the roster when the squad hosts Sky Blue FC on Sunday, July 12 in a match which will be broadcasted live on the Fox Soccer Channel.
Monroe enters her fourth season at the helm of the UAlbany women's soccer program this fall. After posting a Division I program-record five victories in 2006 and 2007, the Great Danes stayed in contention for their first bid to the six-team league tournament until the final weekend of the regular season last year. In addition to bringing in the program’s largest recruiting class of 11 members under Monroe, the squad is slated to return eight of its 11 starters and nearly all of its scoring production.
