Albany, N.Y. – Kelly Oberto was one of four Seawolf players to club a home run and ended the afternoon with four RBI as Stony Brook defeated the UAlbany softball team, 10-2, in America East Conference action on Senior Day at Albany Field on Sunday, May 3. Kat Smith homered for the Great Danes, who honored Meagan Butsch prior to the game and finished the regular season in the top half of the league standings for the eighth time in as many years.
The Great Danes earned the No. 3 seed for the America East championship, a double-elimination tournament which runs from May 7-9, and will open up against second-seeded Boston University at Stony Brook’s University Field.
Stony Brook (34-12, AE 14-5) hit two home runs to take a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Crista Cerrone hit a two-run homer to start the scoring, and Kelly Oberto blasted a three-run shot to center a few plays later. Oberto singled in the sixth run for the Seawolves in the top of the second.
UAlbany (36-14, AE 12-7) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second to close the gap to four. Michelle Connors (Shenendehowa) was hit by a pitch, and Kat Smith went yard to left center on the next play. Stony Brook got solo home runs from Kendall Blumenthal and Marissa Fleury in the third and fourth, respectively, before extending their lead to eight in the top half of the fifth. The Great Danes failed to score in the bottom half of the frame, and the game ended due to the eight-run rule.
UAlbany’s Powell fell to 18-10 this year in the losing effort. She surrendered 12 hits, 10 runs (nine earned) and issued one walk while fanning three. Stony Brook’s Alyssa Struzenberg improved to 21-5 this season with the victory. She yielded two hits and two runs which were earned while issuing one walk and striking out six.
