University of Albany's Brooke Stanley Named MVP of UAlbany Volleyball Classic as Great Danes Post 3-0 Record - UAlbany Sports 2009


Albany, N.Y. - Junior setter Brooke Stanley was named the MVP of the UAlbany Volleyball Classic, leading the Great Danes to an undefeated record. After defeating Hofstra, 3-0, on Friday, Stanley led UAlbany to wins over Seton Hall and Lamar to claim the title. The Great Danes posted a 3-0 victory over Seton Hall with scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-17, before recording a 3-1 win over Lamar with scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-19 and 25-23.

In the early match against Seton Hall, all-tournament team members Teresa Coppiellie and Valerie Sourbeer paced the Great Danes with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Stanley recorded her second straight double-double with a match-high 31 assists and 11 digs. Abbey Wexel recorded a match-best 15 digs, while Coppiellie completed a double-double with 10 digs. The Great Danes out-blocked the Pirates, 7-3.

Morgan DeVries, who was all all-tournament selection for Seton Hall, finished with a team-high 10 kills. She was joined on the all-tournament squad by teammate Meghan Matusiak, who finished with six kills and six digs against the Great Danes. Setter Oliva Trudeau also recorded a double-double with 25 assists and a team-high 14 digs.

In the tournament finale, Stanley finished with a season-high 48 assists and completed her second double-double of the day with 17 digs. Coppiellie and Sourbeer led the offensive charge once again, as Coppielle recorded a match-high 16 kills, to go along with 15 digs, and Sourbeer tallied 13 kills. Sourbeer also finished with two solo blocks. Hillary White also finished with double-digit kills, smashing 13 en route to being named to the all-tournament team. Libero Laurie Gonzalez recorded a match-best 22 digs to pace the Great Dane defense.

Lamar's Jayme Bazile had a team-best 16 kills and six block assists, while all-tournament team selection Kaci Brewer had 15 kills and 15 digs. Setter Adrienne Meengs, the other Lamar representative on the all-tournament team, finished with 48 assists, nine digs, four block assists and four kills. Bailey Smith added 16 digs and three service aces for the Cardinals.

UAlbany (3-3) will return to action on Friday, Sept. 11, as they participate in the Miami/FIU Invitational. The Great Danes will face off against co-hosts Miami and Florida International, along with Middle Tennessee and Florida State in the three-day tournament.
