University of Albany Tennis Sweeps Manhattan; Iannone Posts 6-0, 6-0 Win at No. 6 Singles - UAlbany Sports 2010


Flushing Meadows, N.Y. - Livia Gherman won a 7-5, 6-4 match at first singles, and teamed up with Laine Mackey for an 8-0 win at top doubles to lead UAlbany to a 7-0 win over Manhattan in non-conference tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Gherman's win over Lili Johnson led the Great Danes' sweep of the singles matches, as all six went in straight sets. Susan Ma defeated Hilary Valenzuela, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while Laine Mackey posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Christina Ton at third singles. In the fourth position, Caitlin Crowley defeated Christina Puleo, 6-3, 6-1, while Aubrey Brooks recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win over Stephanie Tsao at the No. 5 spot. Sarah Iannone wrapped up the singles victories for the Great Danes without dropping a set, posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nora Sacchi at the sixth position.

Gherman and Mackey swept Johnson and Tsao at No. 1 doubles, while Ma and Brooks defeated Valenzuela and Puleo, 8-6, in the second match. Iannone and Melissa Coughlin defeated Ton and Sacchi, 8-1, at No. 3 singles to seal up the doubles point for UAlbany.

The Great Danes will return to action on Wednesday, hosting America East Conference foe Binghamton at 3 p.m. at University Courts.
