University at Albany head women's soccer coach Mary-Frances Monroe was recently named the Women's Premier Soccer League East Player of the Year as a member of the New England Mutiny. She was also one of just four midfielders to earn All-WPSL first-team laurels.
Monroe just completed her fourth season as a member of the Mutiny, which is currently one of 51 clubs competing in the WPSL. In 12 matches played, Monroe’s 16 goals and 11 assists for 43 points were league highs. The Mutiny went on to win the WPSL Eastern Conference Championship and earned an appearance in the national semifinals for the fifth time in the past six years.
During the team’s three-game playoff run, Monroe had a hand in five of the club’s six goals. After netting one goal and assisting on two others in a 4-2 win over the Long Island Fury in the WPSL Eastern Conference semifinal, she set up the golden goal to help the Mutiny defeat the SoccerPlus CT Reds, 1-0, to win the WPSL Eastern Conference crown. Monroe also scored the Mutiny’s goal in a 2-1 loss to the Arizona Rush in the semifinal round.
The WPSL is now a 51-team national women's soccer league with five conferences and is considered one of the top women's soccer leagues in the world. Its mission is to provide the highest level of women's soccer while simultaneously providing affordable, quality family entertainment and positive role models for youth. Monroe is beginning her third season as the UAlbany coach.
