The apparent demise of the Conquest and the Patroons should be a clear message to the residents and politicians of Albany: You do not live or work in a professional sports town! You live in a college town and it is about time you start realizing it!
Forget the Conquest. Take a ride up Western or Washington avenue and support a Division I football team (UAlbany). Forget the Patroons. Stick around the SEFCU Arena on the UAlbany Campus or head downtown to the Times Union Center for the Division I hoops of UAlbany and Siena. Like hockey? Then support the two Division I hockey teams (Union & RPI). Your kids want to play lacrosse? Did you know that some of the best college lacrosse this country has to offer is being played on the campuses of UAlbany and siena? Not to mention the numerous other teams fielded by UAlbany, Siena, Union, RPI, Sage, Saint Rose, and Hudson Valley.
Why does the Capital Region need second-rate professional sports franchises when it already has first-tier college athletics? Your first chance to support your real hometown teams starts at 1pm Oct. 11th when your NEC Champion UAlbany Great Danes football team begins its title defense. Embrace what the area offers. Bring the kids out for some tailgating and Division I football.
