Former UAlbany All-America Guard Jamar Wilson on CollegeInsider.com All-Decade Team

Albany, N.Y. - Former University at Albany All-America guard Jamar Wilson has been named to the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-Decade basketball team. Wilson, a two-time Associated Press All-American, was one of 26 players chosen in consultation with Division I coaches and NBA scouts.

Wilson, the 2006 and 2007 America East Conference Player of the Year, led the Great Danes to a pair of conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. He finished his career as the program's all-time scorer with 2,164 points and netted 20-plus points on 50 occasions. The 6-foot-1 guard was also second in career assists with 488.

Wilson, a native of Bronx, N.Y. and a graduate of Our Savior New American School, was named to the All-America East Conference squad four times, including three first-team selections. He twice was voted UAlbany's Male Athlete of the Year.

Former UAlbany Basketball Star Jamar Wilson Will Play Professionally in Belgium

Albany, N.Y. – Former University at Albany basketball standout Jamar Wilson will play professionally in Europe with Verviers-Pepinster, a first division team in Belgium. Verviers-Pepinster reached the Belgian Cup semifinals the last two seasons.

“I am excited to be able to continue my career as a basketball player,” said Wilson, who led the Great Danes to a pair of America East Conference championships and back-to-back NCAA appearances. “Belgium has a lot to offer, the league is competitive, and it is a good place to start. It’s a bonus to get paid well for something you love to do.”

Wilson, a 6-foot-1 guard from Bronx, N.Y., led the Great Danes in scoring (18.8 ppg), rebounding (6.2 pg) and assists (4.8 pg) as the 2007 America East Conference Player of the Year. He became the fourth athlete in conference history to win consecutive player of the year awards, joining Reggie Lewis (Northeastern), Taylor Coppenrath (Vermont) and Malik Rose (Drexel). He finished his career as the UAlbany program’s all-time scorer with 2,164 points and ranked second in assists (488). Wilson also shattered the single-season scoring mark as senior when he totaled 620 points. He was named to the Associated Press All-America squad as an honorable mention selection for the second straight year.

“I am very happy for Jamar,” UAlbany coach Will Brown commented. “This is a great opportunity to play in one of the better professional leagues in Europe. Verviers-Pepinster made him a priority as he is the first import player they decided to sign. Playing in the first division will allow him to develop as a player and chase his dream of playing the game at the highest level.”

Jamar Wilson still looking for NBA opportunity

As you probably know by now, UAlbany guard Jamar Wilson wasn’t selected in the NBA draft Thursday night, which didn’t come as a shocker.

His agent, Michael Whitaker, said this afternoon he was still trying to get Wilson a tryout for an NBA summer-league team. Whitaker said he had been turned down by 24 NBA teams and was still awaiting word from the other six.

Whitaker also represents UMass forward Rashaun Freeman of Schenectady, who was undrafted. Freeman will head to Memphis on Monday for a three-day mini-camp tryout for the Grizzlies’ entry in the Las Vegas Summer League. The Grizzlies are bringing in 17 hopefuls who are vying for a dozen spots.

NBA head scout likes Jamar Wilson

Former University at Albany guard Jamar Wilson has a fan in NBA director of scouting Marty Blake, who said Wilson has the ability to play in the NBA. Eventually.

“Oh yeah, maybe not this year, but he definitely has a chance to play,” Blake said. “I think the guy’s skilled and he can do it. Sometimes he tried to do too much (in college). If he will just contain his game and go with the skills he has, hey, if I had a team, he might be better than some of the guys playing in the league. There are veterans out there making good money who might not be as quick. All he needs is some experience.”

All indications are Wilson, who didn’t play well in the Portsmouth Invitational last month, didn’t receive an invitation to the NBA pre-draft camp that begins in Orlando on Tuesday.

“It’s not looking that way,” Michael Whitaker, Wilson’s agent, said earlier this month. He and Wilson didn’t return phone messages last week. The NBA hasn’t released the rosters for Orlando yet.

Whitaker said earlier this month he was in the process of setting up individual workouts with NBA teams next month, though he declined to reveal which franchises were interested.

Blake said his office isn’t in charge of sending invitations to the Orlando camp. He added Wilson might need some seasoning in the NBA Development League before he can play in the big leagues.

“He needs to play somewhere and work on his game,” Blake said. “He’s really skilled and we saw him against Boise State (in the BracketBusters). He can dominate the level of basketball he played in. He didn’t play well in Portsmouth, but everybody knows that he has skills, especially at the point guard. I would urge him to play in the development league, which is going to 16 teams next year.”

It certainly doesn’t look like Wilson is going to get taken in the NBA Draft on June 28, but Blake pointed to players such as former Notre Dame guard Chris Quinn, who went undrafted last year and then played in 42 games for the Miami Heat.

“There are pretty good players this year who won’t get drafted,” Blake said.
