University of Albany Field Hockey Shuts Out Hofstra, Staying Undefeated To Start Season - UAlbany Sports 2009

Hempstead, N.Y. - Tegan Brown scored her first two career goals in leading the UAlbany field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Hofstra on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. It was the Great Danes' third straight shutout victory to open the 2009 campaign.

Hofstra (2-1) controlled play from the beginning, but goalkeeper Christine Hoffman was able to make two key stops in the opening four minutes of play for the Great Danes to keep the game scoreless. The momentum shifted UAlbany's way at the five-minute mark, as the Great Danes tested Pride goalkeeper Amanda Heyde with four consecutive shots. Shortly after re-entering the game, Brown fired a hard shot from the top of the circle in the 18th minute to give the Great Danes a 1-0 lead which they carried over into the recess.

Brown doubled the Great Dane lead early in the second half off a penalty corner taken by Jess Lindsey in the 44th minute. Nicole Savage made the stop at the top of the circle, and the freshman blasted the ball to the back of the cage to put UAlbany up by a 2-0 score. Lindsey and Savage were credited with the helpers on the play. Hofstra had several chances to get on the scoreboard before time ran out, but all eight shot attempts were either blocked by Great Dane defenders, stuffed by Kristi Troch or sailed wide of the cage.

The Pride outshot the Great Danes, 16-12, while penalty corners were even at 13 apiece. UAlbany's Hoffman and Troch split time in goal, each playing a half. Hoffman made a career-high six saves on eight chances to earn the victory, while Troch turned away three of the eight shots she faced. Hofstra's Heyde made four stops on 12 opportunities in the losing effort.
