University of Albany Golf Finishes Second at ECAC Division I Women's Championship - UAlbany Sports 2009

Williamsburg, Va. - Jessica Signorelli finished tied for seventh individually to lead the UAlbany golf team to a second-place team finish at the ECAC Division I Women's Golf Championship, held at the par-72 Kiskiack Golf Course.

Signorelli carded a two-round score of 156 (80-76) to tie with Penn's Catherine Elliot. Amanda McPhee (83-75) and Corrin Conroy (78-80) both shot a two-day total of 158 to tie for 10th individually. Sophomore Annemarie Kissane recorded a first-round score of 79, followed by a second-round score of 84 to finish in a four-way tie for 19th place, while Stephanie Klein rounded out the UAlbany golfers with a total score of 171 (88-83).

The Great Danes, whose two-day total score of 634 set a new school record, tied with Lehigh for second place in the team scoring. Penn took the team title with a score of 616, while Hartford's Sarah Sideranko was the individual medalist, carding a two-round score of 151 (80-71).

Corrin Conroy Leads UAlbany Golf to a Second-Place Standing at Rutgers Invitational

Piscataway, N.J. – Sophomore Corrin Conroy shot the lowest-ever single round score of 75 to lead the UAlbany golf team to a second-place team standing after the first day of the Rutgers Invitational at the Rutgers University Golf Course on Friday. The Great Danes shot an 18-hole score of 318 on the first day of competition to finish one shot off the lead, held by Lehigh with a score of 317.

Conroy, who recorded four birdies for the day, finished at three-over on the par-72 course, shooting 38 on the front nine and 37 on the back to tie for second in the individual standings. Freshman Annemarie Kissane, who shot a first round total of 76, recorded one of four birdies in the field on the day, finishing fourth overall. Fellow freshman Stephanie Klein placed 17th in the individual standings, shot a first-round total of 80. Juniors Jessica Signorelli and Amanda McPhee finished with 18-hole scores of 87 and 92, respectively.

Lehigh’s Livia Amado led the individual scoring with a first-round total of 74.

UAlbany’s team score of 318 was ten shots better than the previous one-round record total of 328, shot at the Rutgers Invitational on Oct. 18, 2003.

The Great Danes will continue play on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

UAlbany Golf Finishes Sixth at Dartmouth With Record-Breaking Performance

Hanover, N.H. – Freshman Annemarie Kissane recorded the best single-round score in UAlbany golf history on Sunday, posting a 76 to lead the Great Danes to a sixth-place finish at the Dartmouth Invitational at Hanover Country Club. UAlbany posted a team total of 644, which was the best two-day total in the history of the program.

Kissane, whose two-day score of 155 was the lowest score ever for a UAlbany golfer, finished tied for ninth place overall. Junior Amanda McPhee finished with a two-day score of 161 after shooting an 82 on Sunday to tie for 20th overall. Sophomore Corrin Conroy placed 25th individually with a two-day score of 162, shooting a second-round 83. Junior Jessica Signorelli (82-84—166) and freshman Stephanie Klein (82-85—167) rounded out the top-five UAlbany golfers. Freshman Rebecco Otero recorded an 81 on Sunday for a two-day total of 167.

Harvard shot a two-round score of 616 to finish first in the team standings. Siena’s Katelynn Mannix was the individual winner with a two-day score of 148 on the par-72, 5,803-yard course.

The Great Danes will return to action over the weekend at the Princeton Invitational.

University of Albany's Taylert and Conroy Lead the Way to First Round Lead at America East Golf Championship

Simsbury, Conn. – Maggie Taylert and Corrin Conroy each fired an opening-round 80 to lead UAlbany to a first round lead at the America East Conference Women’s Golf championship at the par-72, 5,826-yard Simsbury Farms Golf Course. The Great Danes shot a program-record round of 324, for a three-stroke lead over Hartford.

Taylert and Conroy finished the first round tied for first place with Hartford’s Sadie Heald after carding eight-over par 80s. Taylert shot a round-best 39 on the front nine, before closing out her round with a 41. Conroy recorded a 42 in the opening nine holes and finished out her day with a 38 on the back nine.

Sophomore Amanda McPhee tied Taylert for the best front nine score with a 39 and totaled an 81 to place fourth after the first round. Sophomore Jessica Signorelli rounded out the Great Danes’ top four competitors with an 83, to finish tied for eighth. Junior Sun Hwa Kim carded a 91 for the Great Danes.

The final round of the championship will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 3.

Richard "Doc" Sauers: Always the drive to win

It's been 10 years since Richard "Doc" Sauers worked his last basketball game at the University at Albany. But they still call him coach on the Western Avenue campus.
In 1997, Sauers called it quits after 42 years on the UAlbany bench. But he didn't retire, he moved right into the position of women's golf coach, one he still has today.

"Ten years?," Sauers said when asked if it seems that long ago that he left basketball. "It's a long time ago and it gets more blurry as time goes by. I'm so wrapped up with the golf team right now. It keeps me busy."

Sauers was known as a stiff competitor on the basketball courts. He hated to lose more than most, taking defeats hard and long into 42 years of winter nights.

When the basketball career was over, he had 702 career wins and 330 losses. If you ask him about most of them, you'll get a review from him that will sound like the game ended an hour ago.

Like the first one.

"We played RPI in the old Union College field house ... it was Dec. 1 or 2, 1955," Sauers said and it sounds like you're watching "Hoosiers." "We had an 11-point lead at halftime and we scored 13 points in the second half and we lost by one. We played pass and cut, pass and cut, the whole game. My captain passed and cut but never looked for the ball and we lost the game."

Fifty two years later and he still sounds mad about it.

Sauers, a spry 77, still has a hand in the hoops game. He works for America East, UAlbany's league. He observes the league's officials and says he will see about seven of his former program's games.

He says Will Brown, who has taken the Great Danes to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, has done a good job. And he marvels at the price tag Brown has around his neck to run the basketball team. He is signed through the 2011-12 season at $250,000 per year.

"He's making three times what I made," Sauers said. "But it's a business now. I still watch it, I do. But there is more and more emphasis on recognition and TV contracts. Teams try to fatten up on the patsies and then play .500 in their league and everyone thinks they're good."

On this day, Sauers was hard at work for the women's golf team, trying to land a recruit for next year. He works hard at it.

When then athletic director Milt Richards approached him about running the women's golf team, he didn't have much to work with. His first team consisted of three members of the women's basketball team who had played a little bit of golf.

Back then, rules at matches stated after 10 shots on a hole, it was time to quit and go onto the next.

"We'd have our girls shoot rounds of 125," Sauers said. "It was hard to watch."

Besides coaching the team, he drives the van and his wife, Elaine, another accomplished golfer, is his assistant coach.

Although golf is a calmer sport to coach than basketball, the competitive juices from the coach still flow. He wants to win. He hates mistakes.

"Sometimes when they do something stupid, I bite my lip and look the other way," he said with a laugh. "I just like to have a little action."

Signorelli's 81 Leads UAlbany at Rutgers Invitational

Piscataway, N.J. – Jessica Signorelli shot an 81 to lead the University at Albany women’s golf team in the second round of the Rutgers Invitational at the RU Golf Course on Saturday, Oct. 13. The Great Danes finished the invitational in 16th place with a two-day total of 706.

Signorelli finished in a tie for 39th at 169 as she followed her first round 88 with an 81 in round two. Freshman Corrin Conroy shot an 82 in the second round for a two-day total of 171 and in a tie for 47th. Senior Maggie Taylert finished in a tie for 74th with a 181 after an 89 in the second round and junior Sun Hwa Kim shot a 90 in the second round for a two-round score of 185. Senior Rebecca Lukac rounded out the Great Dane competitors with a final round 95.

UAlbany returns to action at the Fairleigh Dickinson Tournament in Hillsborough, N.J. on Monday, Oct. 22 and Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Corrin Conroy Finishes Seventh at Dartmouth Invitational

Hanover, N.H. - Corrin Conroy shot a six-over par 78 to lead the UAlbany women’s golf team in the second round of the Dartmouth Invitational held at the Hanover Country Club. UAlbany finished in eighth place with a total team score of 679 (339-340) on the par 72 course.

Following up her school-record round of 77 in the opening round, Conroy finished in a tie for seventh individually with a two round total of 155 after shooting a 78 on Sunday. Sophomore Jessica Signorelli shot an 80 in the second round after an 81 on Saturday. Senior Maggie Taylert followed her 84 in the first round with an 81 in the final round. Rebecca Lukac was the Great Danes fourth scorer with a 101 in the second round. Sun Hwa Kim rounded out the UAlbany team with a final round score of 105.

Harvard won the invitational with a team total of 603. Hayley Milbourn of Amherst was the individual champion with a two-over par 146.

CORRIN CONROY SHOOTS SCHOOL RECORD 77 AT DARTMOUTH INVITATIONAL

Hanover, N.H. – Freshman Corrin Conroy shot a school-record 77 to lead the University at Albany women’s golf team in the opening round at the Dartmouth Invitational held at the Hanover Country Club. The Great Danes are in eighth place out of 14 schools after the first round.

Conroy, a freshman from Oswego, N.Y., led the Great Danes to team total of 339 with a 40 on the front nine and a 37 on the back nine for her score of 77. Sophomore Jessica Signorelli carded an 81 (42-39) for second among UAlbany golfers and 15th overall. Senior Maggie Taylert shot an 84 (46-38), while Sun Hwa Kim shot a 97 (47-50) and Rebecca Lukac carded a 106 (50-56) for the Great Danes.

The second round of the invitational is Sunday, Sept. 16 at Hanover Country Club.
