University of Albany Women's Basketball Defeats Brown, 64-54, Records Win For First-Year Head Coach - UAlbany Sports 2010



Albany, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Ebone Henry scored 23 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the UAlbany to a 64-54 win over Brown University in the season opener for both teams on Friday, Nov. 12 at SEFCU Arena. The victory marked a successful debut for first-year head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson.

Julie Forster, a 6-foot sophomore, and Adrienne Jones added 13 and 10 points, respectively. Forster also led her team with 16 rebounds. Brown was led by Aileen Daniels with 15 points. Hannah Passafuime had 14.

"It was a great team effort," said Abrahamson-Henderson, who previously was the associate head coach at Indiana University and Missouri State's head coach." "We stuck together the whole game. We kept plugging away and got key rebounds. It was the first game and we were a little tight at the start."

Henry, a member of last year's America East Conference all-rookie team, scored 14 of her points in the second half as the Great Danes broke open a close game that saw 10 lead changes in the first half. Henry's free throw put Albany in front to stay, 22-21. The Great Danes led at the intermission, 29-27.

In the second period, UAlbany led 33-32, but ran off five straight markers. Felicia Johnson, a junior guard who had seven points and four assists, canned a three-pointer and Cassanda Callaway made a jumper. The Great Danes pushed out to a 44-34 advnatage when Keyana Williams scored in the lane and Henry sank two foul shots.

The Bears were later still down by nine, but closed to within 54-49 with 3:11 remaining. Lauren Clarke and Sophie Beutel each split a pair of free throws around a Daniels' basket. But UAlbany regrouped with five unanswered to send the lead back to double figures. Johnson and Henry converted jumpers, the second after an offensive rebound. The sophomore gave her team a commanding 59-49 lead with 1:33 remaining, and her team had its first season-opening victory since the 2003-04 campaign.
