UAlbany's Entry Plaza

Construction on the Entry Plaza at the main entrance to the University at Albany campus is proceeding right on time, in preparation for the completion of an attractive new entrance prior to winter.
The new entrance will have expanded green spaces and seating for students for outdoor gatherings and recreation.

Assistant Vice President for Physical Facilities John Giarrusso said, "We are currently working on trenching the site for the electrical and plumbing connections associated with the lighting plans and the large fountain. You'll also see the concrete work for the grand staircase taking shape. In the coming weeks, larger portions of paving will occur, the lawn areas will be graded, and the fountain equipment will arrive on site. Everything is proceeding very well."

Plans for the three-acre space call for a park-like setting with more green space, ornamental trees and gardens, fountains and bench seating.

The existing plaza is being redesigned with green space and pedestrian-grade pavers providing a smoother surface, as well as enhancing its visual appeal. The amount of green space will be increase some 85 percent - from roughly 19,000 square feet to 35,000 square feet. With a greater focus on green space and level surfaces, the plaza can be used for major campus outdoor events, including spring commencement.

In addition, the main stairs leading to the Podium, located between the Fine Arts and Arts & Sciences buildings, will be replaced and upgraded.

The space will be highlighted by a fountain with a design similar to those found in major public parks around the country, as well as bench seating to encourage interaction and use by the campus community.
