University of Albany Womens Soccer Claims 3rd America East Championship In 4 Years - UAlbany Sports 2018


For the third time in four years, the University at Albany women’s soccer team has claimed the America East Championship. The Great Danes, three-seed in the 2018 tournament, defeated the four-seed UMass Lowell Riverhawks by a final score of 5-1.

 The game, in which UAlbany avenged a regular-season loss to the Riverhawks, featured four of the five major conference Player of the Year selections from the 2018 season. UAlbany boasted Striker of the Year Mariah Williams, Defender of the Year Caroline Kopp, and Rookie of the Year Jada Colbert, while UMass Lowell fielded Midfielder of the Year Rachel Morrier.

 UAlbany entered today’s championship game riding a five-game winning streak during which they have outscored their opponents 10-0. To reach the title game, they defeated six-seed New Hampshire at home in the quarterfinal round and avenged a regular-season loss to two-seed Hartford away in the semifinals.

 UMass Lowell advanced past five-seed Vermont in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals and upset top-seed Stony Brook 2-0 in their semifinal matchup, avenging their 1-0 loss to the Seawolves in the regular-season finale.

University of Albany Field Hockey Captures America East Championship - UAlbany Sports 2018


The top-seeded UAlbany field hockey team captured its third America East Championship in five years with a 2-0 win against second-seeded Maine on Sunday afternoon.

 Rocktaeschel took the stop off a penalty corner pass from Von Der Muhlen and broke open the scoring for the Great Danes at 15:48. Burchell tallied her sixth goal off the season with a one-timer in front of the cage. MaCallum found the stick of an open Burchell who gave her squad the 2-0 edge in the 34rd minute.

 The Great Danes would hold onto the lead for the remaining 37 minutes. Maine would threaten late with a corner opportunity in the final minute but UAlbany denied their opponents of a shot until the final buzzer would sound. Nealon recorded two saves in the outing while her counterpart picked up three.

Nealon now owns a personal-best 10 shutouts and 15 wins this season. The Great Danes held a slight 9-8 advantage in shots but Maine held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners.

University of Albany Field Hockey Blanks #10 Louisville On Senior Day - UAlbany Sports 2018


Frederike Helmke’s second half goal lifted the twenty second-ranked UAlbany field hockey team to a 1-0 victory against No.10 Louisville Sunday afternoon at Alumni Turf.

 With the win their home finale, the Great Danes improve to 12-3 overall and 9-0 in friendly confines. The Cardinals drop to 12-5 with the loss. Goalkeeper Melissa Nealon, who earned her second consecutive blank sheet, now stands alone in fourth place in UAlbany history with 12 career shutouts and 22 career wins.

 Helmke’s game-winning goal came in the 50th minute after UAlbany earned a penalty corner. Junior Viola von der Muhlen got the play started with a feed to Helmke who fired a shot into the right side of the cage. After notched her fourth goal in as many games, the senior is posting a career high eight goals on the season.

 The Great Danes victory was the result of an evenly-played tilt which saw the two squads battle to a 0-0 stalemate at the break. UAlbany held a slight 4-2 shot advantage in the half but neither team's defense would break. Coming out of the half, the teams continued to play a midfield game throughout the next 15 minutes of the half and the Great Danes began to gain some momentum, earning a pair of penalty corners.

On their second attempt the Great Danes capitalized to break open the scoring and take a 1-0 lead after Helmke’s shot glanced off the Louisville goalkeeper’s pad. The Cardinals looked to increase their offense when they added an extra attacker in the final two minutes of regulation, however the squad was unable to capitalize. UAlbany’s Kelsey McCrudden was able to gain possession in the final seconds and run out the clock to secure the team’s statement win.

he UAlbany volleyball team opened its 2018 home slate with a straight set sweep against Siena on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Grace Cozad, who hit .417 on the day, led the Great Danes with a career-high 13 kills.

University of Albany Women's Golf Defeats Siena - UAlbany Sports 2018

The UAlbany golf team defeated Siena in the crosstown challenge, held at Wolfert's Roost on September 9th. This is the fifth straight win for the Great Danes in the competition, which is held each fall. The Great Danes finished with a team score of 300. Siena finished with a score of 332. Megan Henry finished in first with a round score of 74, while Madison Walker and Caroline Juillat both finished with 75. Annika Espino finished next with a score of 76, followed by Helga Einarsdottir with 80 and Pasqualina Tartaglione with an 85. "I’m very proud of our performance today," said head coach Colleen Cashman-McSween. "Starting out the season with four strong scores in the 70’s and opening with a team total of 300, I would say that is a success. It was nice to see us making lots of birdies out there and especially finishing the 18th hole with three players making birdies! We always love the Dartmouth event next weekend as we set our team record there last year. So today was a great start to the season and hopefully a sign of what is yet to come!" On Saturday, September 15th through Sunday, September 16th, the golf team will compete in the Dartmouth Invitational at the Hanover Country Club.

University of Albany Womens Soccer Destroys Siena - UAlbany Sports 2018


Claire Stackel crossed the goalie box from the right to assist Mariah Williams in scoring the first goal of the game at the twelve minute mark.

 Despite many attempts, Williams’ goal remained the only goal scored by either team going into the second half. Led by their senior teammate, two freshman stood out in the second half, scoring their first goals of the season. Midfielder Jada Colbert, assisted by Kimberly Dieroff, dribbled in from the right and blasted a tailing shot across the inside left post in the 60th minute, putting another mark on the board for the Great Danes.

 In the 77th minute, Christina Cernuto grabbed a loose ball in front of the goal and turned to score in close. Cernuto was assisted by Gina Bracamonte. Andrea Leitner served as goal keeper for the Great Danes and made three saves during the match.

Short story: Freshman receiver Dev Holmes caught for 148 yards in his debut and Vince Testaverde threw for 263 in his first collegiate start in the University at Albany football team’s 33-7 season-opening loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

 Key stats - Freshman receiver Dev Holmes caught nine passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. He tied for the seventh-highest single-game receiving total in program history. - The Great Danes put up 323 yards of total offense against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. - Levi Metheny, making his first career start at middle linebacker, led the defense with 13 tackles.

 Quote Head Coach Greg Gattuso: “I thought we settled in, played a lot better as the game progressed, started making more plays and got a few turnovers. Offensively, we moved the ball, had people open. I thought Vincent played a good football game. … All in all, the first thing for me is effort, heart, and I thought we played hard.”

University of Albany Football Names Testaverde As Starting Quarterback - UAlbany Sports 2018

 ALBANY, N.Y. – Fifth-year senior quarterback Vincent Testaverde will start the University at Albany football team’s season-opener at Pittsburgh on Sept. 1, Head Coach Greg Gattuso has announced.

 Testaverde, a transfer from Miami (Fla.) in his first and only year of eligibility with the Great Danes, emerged from a three-way competition in training camp to win the starting nod.

 The son of longtime NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde, the younger Testaverde played well in UAlbany’s Spring Game this past April, completing 11 of 18 passes and tossing two touchdowns.

 Testaverde last appeared in a college game in 2014, when as a true freshman at Texas Tech he completed 15-of-26 passes for 116 yards against Texas. He then transferred to Miami, his father’s alma mater, where he redshirted in 2015.

University of Albany's Head Coach Scott Marr Will Serve As Coach On Iroquois Nationals - UAlbany Sports 2018



COACH MARR, UALBANY PLAYERS TO SERVE WITH 2018 IROQUOIS NATIONALS

 ALBANY, N.Y. – With the World Games starting in a week, several people with UAlbany ties, including Scott Marr and five players, will be part of the 2018 Iroquois Nationals roster.

 Five UAlbany players, current Great Danes Tehoka Nanticoke and Ron John plus alumni Lyle Thompson, Miles Thompson and Ty Thompson, all made the 23-man Iroquois Nationals roster. 

Nanticoke and all three Thompsons are listed at attack while John will be in the midfield. Lyle and Miles Thompson were on the team for the 2014 World Games while Ty was a reserve; each Nanticoke and John played for the U19 Iroquois Nationals previously.

 Marr will serve as an assistant coach and team’s offensive coordinator under head coach Mark Burnam. Marr returns to the World Games in a coaching capacity, having helped team USA, last in 2006.

University of Albany's Connor Fields Named To 2018 Men's Lacrosse All American Team

 FOXBORO, Mass. – Connor Fields has been named to the 2018 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse All-Tournament Team, announced after the title game on Monday.

 Fields was a member of the 10-person All-Tournament Team, voted on by the media and school SIDs attending the NCAA Tournament.

 Fields is UAlbany’s lone representative on the list. The senior attack helped UAlbany make its first-ever run to Championship Weekend.

3 In three games played in the tournament, Fields earned a combined 15 points off five goals and 10 assists, including three goals and two assists in the semifinal game vs. Yale.

ALBANY, N.Y. – Five UAlbany players have earned 2018 Inside Lacrosse Media All-America distinction, announced by the publication on Sunday night. JD Colarusso was named to the First Team, Connor Fields, TD Ierlan and Kyle McClancy were selected to the Second Team while Tehoka Nanticoke is Honorable Mention. Fields, Ierlan and McClancy all earn this recognition for the second straight year. In the second year of Inside Lacrosse having Media All-Americans, it is the second consecutive year that UAlbany placed five on these teams.

University of Albany CAA Football's Manzo Lewis Signs With LA Chargers - UAlbany Sports 2018

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Former University at Albany tight end/fullback Anthony Manzo-Lewis has signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent, the team announced Saturday. Mazno-Lewis is the 14th former Great Dane to sign with an NFL team. Brian Parker, another former UAlbany tight end (2014), also is under contract with the Denver Broncos. This past season, Manzo-Lewis earned a spot on the All-Colonial Athletic Association Second-Team after catching 20 passes for 188 yards. The Montvale, N.J., native had 53 career receptions for 614 yards and four touchdowns.

University of Albany Men's Lacrosse Unanimous #1 Team In The Nation - UAlbany Sports 2018


ALBANY, N.Y. – There is no doubt in the minds of coaches and media across the nation: the UAlbany men's lacrosse team is the unanimous #1 team in the country.

 UAlbany received all possible first-place votes in the United States Intercollegiate Coaches Association (USILA) poll and the Inside Lacrosse Maverik media poll for #1 in each. It is the third consecutive week that UAlbany has been ranked #1.

UAlbany secured its position on Saturday with a pivotal 11-10 comeback victory over #2 Maryland on Saturday in College Park.

 Including a 19-8 win over UMass on Tuesday, UAlbany stands at 5-0 overall, one of three DI teams left undefeated. Also undefeated is UAlbany’s next opponent, Vermont, ranked at #14 in the coaches poll and #12 in the media poll, is 7-0 overall.

University of Albany Men's Lacrosse Retains #1 Ranking With Win Over #2 Maryland - UAlbany Sports 2018

 The #1 UAlbany men’s lacrosse team outscored #2 Maryland 5-0, including four goals in the final 6:14, to come back and win 11-10 and solidify its place as the top team in the nation.

Key Stats:
 UAlbany: Connor Fields earned the game-winning goal with 1:16 left, finishing with four goals and two assists.

Jakob Patterson had the game-tying goal with 4:28 remaining, completing a four-goal day, while Kyle McClancy had three goals.

 On defense, JD Colarusso earned the victory with 11 saves, including four in the fourth quarter, with Stone Sims earning two caused turnovers. TD Ierlan was 14-for-24 on faceoffs with nine ground balls.

University of Men's Lacrosse - TD Ierlan Earns Warrior/US Lacrosse Player of the Week

 ALBANY, N.Y. – TD Ierlan’s perfect faceoff day vs. Cornell has earned him the Warrior/US Lacrosse Player of the Week honor, announced on Monday.

 The award is selected by the staff of US Lacrosse Magazine. This is the second time Ierlan has been selected as the National Player of the Week is his career, getting this award on April 3rd, 2017.

 The sophomore faceoff specialist came up on shy of the NCAA DI record for a perfect faceoff day, going 24-for-24 vs. Cornell with 22 ground balls. It is his first-ever perfect faceoff day as a Great Dane. His performance helped UAlbany defeat Cornell 11-9 on Sunday to send the Great Danes to 3-0.

#3 University of Albany Men's Lacrosse Crushes #7 Syracuse In Season Opener - UAlbany Sports 2018

 The UAlbany men’s lacrosse team earned one of its most dominant season opening victories ever on Saturday afternoon, crushing #8/7 Syracuse 15-3 in the Carrier Dome.

Tehoka Nanticoke scored five goals in his collegiate debut, while Jakob Patterson netted four goals, including the first goal for UAlbany in the game.

Connor Fields had two goals and two assists.

 JD Colarusso earned the victory with 10 saves and three goals allowed.

TD Ierlan had a 76.2% faceoff rate (16-for-21), adding nine ground balls.

UAlbany held Syracuse to the Orange’s lowest single game goal total since 1973 (two goals).

 The UAlbany defense held Syracuse scoreless in a period of 35:08 from 11:50 in the first to 6:02 in the third.
