University of Albany's Hibbard, Sherman Compete At Junior Nationals - UAlbany Sports 2016

CLOVIS, Calif. - One year ago, the University at Albany track & field program sent three men to compete in the USATF Junior Championships. This year, they sent two women, who competed in three events.

Friday Freshman Cara Sherman competed first for UAlbany, in the 5,000m. Sherman, a local product hailing from Rotterdam, N.Y., ranks fourth all-time outdoors in the women’s 5,000m in UAlbany history, with a personal-best time of 17:00.21, set earlier this year. She placed ninth overall in her race on Friday, crossing the line in 17:40.71. Saturday Sherman was in action again on Saturday, where she competed in the 3,000m. Sherman ranks fifth all-time outdoors at UAlbany in this event, with a personal-best time of 9:57.62. This time, Sherman placed 10th overall in 10:05.74.

Also competing Saturday was freshman high jumper and school record holder Anika Hibbard. In her first season, Hibbard set the school record in the outdoor high jump when she cleared a height of 5’-9.25”, surpassing the previous record of 5’-8.5” set by Rochelle Reid in 2015. Hibbard also placed 10th overall, clearing a height of 5’-5.75”. Though Hibbard and Sherman will not move on to represent Team USA, a number of their teammates still are scheduled to compete internationally over the summer, including at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
