Konstanty & Rowland Each Collect Three Hits in UAlbany's 12-4 Win Over Notre Dame

Clearwater, Fla. – Senior Mike Konstanty and sophomore Brendan Rowland each registered three hits and three runs batted in to lead UAlbany to a 12-4 win over Notre Dame on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, Fla.

The Great Danes scored their first run in the opening inning as Konstanty doubled in Rowland from second base with two outs. The Fighting Irish responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Notre Dame (1-2) took a 2-1 lead after stringing together three consecutive hits.

UAlbany (1-2) blew the game open with five runs in the top of the second inning. Following back-to-back one-out walks, senior catcher Tom Zink doubled down the left field line to plate Zac Halloran and Kyle Crean. Rowland followed with a two-run blast to left field to give the Great Danes a 5-2 lead. After consecutive singles by juniors Dave West and Ryan Gugel, Konstanty drove in West from third with a single through the left side.

The Great Danes added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Gugel, his second of the season. Notre Dame got one run back in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out double by freshman Golden Tate.

UAlbany added four runs in the top of the seventh inning to jump out to a 12-3 lead. After Halloran recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance junior Gary Pitcheralle to second, Crean followed with an RBI single to center. Two batters later, Rowland singled to center to drive in his third run of the game. Zink scored the third run of the inning on a groundout by West. Konstanty closed out the scoring for the Great Danes with a double down the left field line to score Rowland. Notre Dame added an unearned run in the bottom to the ninth inning to deliver the game’s final score.

Junior left-hander Dave Noble picked up the win in relief for the Great Danes by pitching two scoreless innings. Junior Josh Willimott struck out three, while yielding three runs, over the first four innings. Junior Matthew Herrick struck out four in two scoreless innings and junior Chris Ott finished the game by striking out two in the ninth inning. Freshman Brian Dupra took the loss for the Fighting Irish, allowing eight runs over three innings.

Zink registered three hits, two RBI and two runs scored for the Great Danes, while Gugel had two hits and two RBI and West recorded two hits and scored twice.

The Great Danes return to action on Friday, Feb. 29 in Spartanburg, S.C. at 4:00 p.m. against Wofford.
