University of Albany's Jodi Battaglia Scores Career-High Six Goals Leading Women's Lacrosse to 19-15 Win Over Harvard - UAlbany Sports 2009

Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore attack Jodi Battaglia scored a career-high six goals in leading UAlbany to a 19-15 non-league triumph over Harvard on Wednesday, March 25 at John Fallon Field. The Great Danes, who were coming off their first-ever national top-20 victory four days ago, extended their win streak to three straight.

Harvard (3-5) trailed by six at halftime, but cut the margin down to four on three occasions in the second half. Sarah Bancroft sent a free-position shot under the crossbar to slice the deficit to 16-12 with 14:49 remaining.

UAlbany (4-5) put the game away by scoring three consecutive times. Battaglia worked her way from the right, spun from a defender, and rifled a shot into the upper left corner. She later one-timed Taylor Frink’s crossing pass from the side of the crease into the left side. Freshman Melanie Sosnowski closed out that run by placing a shot around goalkeeper Kerry Clark with 2:13 left.

The Great Danes, who posted their highest offensive output in two years, leaped to a 5-0 lead in the opening seven-plus minutes. Battaglia scored three times in that outburst, and sent Kayla Best’s feed into the net after cutting to the top of the crease. Rory Redmond tallied the first of her two goals to get her team off to a solid start for the third consecutive game.

Harvard’s Kaitlin Martin, a senior attack who netted seven goals, would close the gap to 6-3 when she shook a UAlbany defender and went low into the cage. The Great Danes regrouped with three unanswered. Julie Bush found the net twice in that span. Bush, who accounted for a career-best five points, had a hand in all three scores. She finished off a transition following a successful clear, before setting up Battaglia’s backhanded shot on a give-and-go play. Bush, a junior attack, later drove from the right and delivered the ball inside the right post.

“Everyone can catch the ball on all ends of the field,” said Bush, who has 20 points this spring after missing most of the last two seasons with knee injuries. “There is more of a flow when that happens, especially on attack. I have been looking forward to the season; it’s a good time to come back. My coaches and teammates have given me a lot of support.”

Harvard’s Sara Flood totaled three goals and two assists. Jess Halpern, the 2008 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, had one goal and three assists. Halpern is fifth among the nation’s leaders with 29 goals.

Sophomore midfielder Mel Rorie had four goals, two in each half, for the Great Danes, who avenged a 16-10 loss to Harvard one year ago. Best added three goals and one assist. The junior midfielder has scored at least one goal in 39 consecutive games, the third-longest streak among current Division I players.

University of Albany Softball Sweeps Siena College In Doubleheader Again Behind McIntosh and Powell Shutouts - UAlbany Sports 2009

Albany, N.Y. – Junior pitchers Leah McIntosh and Marissa each threw a shutout in the circle in leading the UAlbany softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Siena in the home opener at Albany Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Great Danes, who extended their home winning streak in the regular season to 15 games, won both contests by identical scores of 2-0.

After McIntosh struck out the side in the top half of the first inning, UAlbany got all the scoring it needed in the bottom half of the opening frame. Andrianna Walraven was hit by a pitch to start the game, and then stole second. Kristine Bill followed up with a single to right center, and advanced to second base on the throw home by center fielder Jenny McNulty to keep Walraven at third. Michelle Connors then got hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Walraven made it home for the first run on a sacrifice fly to center by Meagan Butsch.

Pitcher Jamie Piela continued to have trouble settling down on the mound, hitting Gina Mason with a pitch to load the bases for the second time in the stanza. Two batters later, Katie Wambold walked to force in the second run. Piela, who gave up only three hits the rest of the way, avoided any further damage by inducing a groundout to retire the side. A pitcher’s dual ensued between McIntosh and Piela, but the Great Danes held on for the win.

UAlbany’s McIntosh improved to 10-0 this season with the victory and dropped her earned run average to 0.42. She recorded nine strikeouts while only giving up four hits and one walk. Siena’s Piela fell to 1-4 with the loss. She surrendered four hits, two runs which were earned and one walk.

In game two, UAlbany got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Meagan Butsch knocked out a home run to straightaway center. After only recording a bunt single in the top of the first, Siena (2-11) got a spark offensively in the top half of the fifth when Amanda Filipazzo led off with a double to center. However, Marissa Powell, who recorded her first shutout of the season, was able to get out of trouble with some help from catcher Kat Smith after Fillipazzo advanced to third on a groundout by Lindsey McKeever.

Batting with two outs, Courtney Brinkman popped up a pitch in foul territory that appeared to be headed towards the stands behind home plate. However, it dropped just short and was caught by Smith at the fence to end the inning.

The Great Danes added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Diane MacDowell led off with a bunt single, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She made it over to third when Walraven grounded out to second on the next play, and scored on a single up the middle by Kristine Bill. Powell took care of the rest by retiring the side in order in the seventh, as the Great Danes captured their seventh victory in the last eight tries.

UAlbany’s Powell improved to 3-7 with the victory. She struck out six while scattering just two hits and inducing only one walk. Siena’s Filipazzo fell to 1-4 with the loss despite striking out five and only surrendering two runs which were earned along with four hits.

UAlbany (13-7) opens up America East Conference play this weekend on the road against Boston University. Last year, the Great Danes swept the three-game series between the teams at Albany Field to clinch the regular season title. The two squads will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28 beginning at 1 p.m. The series finale will start at noon on Sunday, March 29.

University of Albany's Joe Greene and Fey Adaramola Earn America East Track and Field Weekly Honors - UAlbany Sports 2009

Cambridge, Mass. - UAlbany’s Joe Greene and Fey Adaramola have been selected as the America East Conference male and female indoor track and field performers of the week, as announced on Tuesday, March 24 by the conference office. Both Great Danes are being honored for their performances at the Carolina Classic in Puerto Rico this past weekend.

Greene qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championship in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. An All-American in the event, he posted a winning time of 51.69 seconds. Adaramola played a role in two ECAC qualifying marks. She won the 200-meter dash in 24.71 seconds, and also anchored the second-place 4x400-meter relay team which clocked in a time of 3:50.57.

University of Albany Men's Outdoor Track and Field Picked to Win Fifth Straight America East Title; Women Tabbed Third in - UAlbany Sports 2009

Cambridge, Mass. – The University at Albany men’s outdoor track and field team has been picked to finish first, while the women’s squad was projected to place third, according to the preseason poll conducted by the America East Conference head coaches.

The men’s team, which has won four straight and five of the past six conference championships, was unanimously selected to repeat this winter. The Great Danes received all eight possible first-place votes and accumulated 64 points. New Hampshire was picked second with 54 points and earned the final first-place vote, while Binghamton (51 points) was chosen third.

Boston University, which won its fourth consecutive outdoor crown last spring, received seven of the possible eight first-place votes and garnered 62 points. New Hampshire and UAlbany garnered the remaining two first-place votes, and the Wildcats edged out the Great Danes by one point for the second-place spot.

All-America honorees Joe Greene and Luke Schoen headline the list of 23 returning student-athletes, including 12 league champions, who have garnered all-conference laurels for the two squads. Schoen earned All-America honors at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship by placing fifth in the pole vault, and he followed that up by earning the same national distinction at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship two weeks ago with a sixth-place finish. Greene was an All-American in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 2007 when he recorded a fourth-place finish at the NCAA meet.

The Great Danes should continue to be strong in the sprinting and hurdle events. Jean Juste, Garrett Askew and Nicholas Assini all placed first through third in the 110-meter hurdles at last year’s conference championship. Alie Beauvais, who already qualified for the IC4A championship at the Carolina Classic last weekend, will look to challenge Greene for the conference title in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Sprinters Jeffery Barnes and Pat Weider won the 200-meter dash in 2008 and 2007, respectively. On the women’s side, Kamilah McShine has won the 55 and 100-meter high hurdles titles at six of the seven conference championships. Newcomer Fey Adaramola broke the school record in the 200 and won the event at the indoor championship this past winter, while Rebecca Kelly will look to post a top-three finish in the 400 hurdles after placing fourth at the conference meet in 2008.

The middle distance runners have been one of UAlbany’s most improved event groups. Tyler Fogarty and John Moore were USA Junior National All-Americans in the 800-meter run, while Joe Belokopitsky was an all-conference selection last year in the event. Newcomer Aaron Lozier, who set the school record in the mile indoors this winter, and Zuliana Fontanez, an indoor ECAC qualifier in the 800-meter run, should also make strong contributions this winter.

Ricardo Estremera and Laura Cummings, who have each won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the conference championship, are expected to lead the distance runners. Cummings won the event in a meet record time of 10:33.60 while setting a new school record last year, while Estremera, who redshirted this past spring, won the 2007 title. Cummings and Estremera will also bolster the middle distance group.

One of the deepest event groups will be the jumpers. Valete Graham and Mike McCadney won the long and triple jump, respectively, at last year’s conference championship. Jenn Gurrant, who provisionally qualified for the NCAAs in the triple jump indoors this winter, won the outdoor title at the America East meet two years ago. Newcomer Nasim Siddeeq, a transfer from Robert Morris who was named the USTFCCCA Division I Northeast Field Athlete of the Year this winter, set a meet record in the triple jump at the 2008 Northeast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Fred Casimo, Kyle Nadler, Freddie Willls and Tiffany Sprenkels have also met IC4A and ECAC marks in their careers.

The throwers have been among the fastest growing groups, especially on the women’s side. Wilfredo de jesus Elias, Ashley Lewis and Ritshell Verdier are returning all-conference honorees. de jesus Elias placed second in the hammer throw at last year’s America East championship, while Verdier and Lewis finished second and third, respectively, in the discus throw. Verdier, the discus champion in 2006, also holds the school record in the event, while Isabella Katsarelis owns the program standard in the javelin. Kadine Johnson, who accumulated points in three throwing events at the conference championship meet as a freshman last year, will look to earn all-conference honors this spring.

The America East Conference Championships will be hosted by Binghamton University on May 2-3.

Baseball Falls to Marist in Non-Conference Action

Albany, N.Y. – Freshman shortstop Jon Schwind went 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead Marist to a 9-2 win over UAlbany in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Field.

Schwind got the Red Foxes started in the top of the first inning, as he led off the game with a single through the left side. He later scored on a double by first baseman Ryan Gauck to score the first of three runs for Marist in the inning. Ricky Pacione and Gauck also scored in the frame. UAlbany cut the lead to two in the bottom of the second. Catcher Ryan Gugel drew a leadoff walk and was driven home on a single by Sean Donovan.

The score remained at 3-1 until the top of the sixth, when Marist recorded three runs. George Agostini drove in one run with a single down the right field line, sending Brian McDonough home. Schwind then drove a double down the left field line, scoring Agostini and Bryce Nugent, who drew a walk to get on base. The Red Foxes tacked on two more runs in the seventh, with Schwind knocking a base hit through the middle to send two baserunners home.

UAlbany was able to score one run in the bottom of the eighth. Third baseman Pete Eichner hit a leadoff single and was driven in by centerfielder Dave West, who hit a single through the left side. The Red Foxes then turned a double play to end the inning and the threat of a Great Dane scoring rally.

Marist added an insurance run in the top of the final frame with an RBI single by Kyle Meyer, scoring Michael Gallic. After loading the bases, UAlbany relief pitcher Dave Noble induced a ground out back to mound to get out of trouble and give the Great Danes one last chance to rally. Senior right handed reliever Jake Rifkin got three quick outs for Marist to give the Red Foxes the win.

UAlbany’s Ryan White took the loss on the mound, striking out two in his two innings of work. The Great Danes used seven pitchers in the game, with none throwing more than two frames. Starter Sean McKeown earned the win for Marist (10-8), tossing four innings, fanning three and allowing one earned run.

UAlbany (2-14) will return to action with a four-game series on the road at Fairleigh Dickinson over the weekend.

Northeast Conference Champion University of Albany Announces FCS Football Schedule for 2009 Season - UAlbany Sports 2009

Albany, N.Y. -- University at Albany Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy announced on Tuesday, March 24 the school's football schedule for the 2009 season. The Great Danes, who are coming off consecutive Northeast Conference championships, meet a group of challenging Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponents. The non-league schedule features Georgia Southern and Massachusetts, two programs that have won FCS national championships, Maine and Bryant. In addition, UAlbany battles seven NEC teams.

The Great Danes begin away from home for the ninth time in the last 11 years when they travel to Georgia Southern on Saturday, Sept. 5. The Eagles have captured six national titles and seven Southern Conference championships in their history. Georgia Southern has seven starters on offense and defense back from a club that posted a winning campaign for the 25th time in the last 27 years. UAlbany faces Massachusetts for the second year in a row in the second week. Kevin Morris, a former UAlbany assistant, is in his first season as head coach. UMass returns first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association running back Tony Nelson, who ran for 1,325 yards and 12 touchdowns on last year's 7-5 squad.

Maine comes to University Field to open the home schedule on Sept. 20. The Black Bears finished 8-5 one year ago and made their fifth NCAA postseason appearance. Maine was ranked in both FCS national top-25 polls at season's end. Head coach Jack Cosgrove, now in his 17th season, has fullback Jared Turcotte, a first-team All-CAA selection, returning. Bryant posted a 7-4 record in its first NCAA FCS season and recorded wins over three NEC opponents. The Bulldogs, who are going through a five-year NCAA reclassification period, become a full Northeast member in 2012. Running back Jerell Smith ran for 1,254 yards and six TDs last year.

Duquesne, who joined the NEC as a football-playing program last year, will be the opponent for Homecoming and Family Weekend on Oct. 10. UAlbany's Athletic Hall of Fame will also induct new members on that weekend. Sacred Heart (Sept. 26) and Robert Morris (Nov. 7) also come to the Capital Region.

Bob Ford, who is first among active FCS coaches with 234 career victories and is a three-time NEC coach of the year, begins his 37th varsity season with 48 letterwinners, including 14 starters, back from last year's team. UAlbany (9-3) won its fourth NEC championship and defeated Jacksonville in third annual Gridiron Classic. All-America tailback David McCarty rushed for a single-season record 1,852 yards and 13 touchdowns. Free safety Dave Casale and inside linebacker Justin Brancaccio are among five returning first-team all-conference players. Casale had 74 tackles and seven interceptions, while Brancaccio (91 tackles) led a unit which allowed 18.2 points and 300.8 yards per game.

Chicago, Ill. – University at Albany’s Kayla Best has been selected WomensLax.com National Player of the Week, as announced on Monday, March 23. Best was also chosen America East Conference Player of the Week.

A junior midfielder from Guilderland, N.Y., Best equaled a career-high with seven points, including three goals and four assists, in last Saturday’s 16-15 overtime upset of No. 13 New Hampshire at John Fallon Field. The Great Danes posted their first victory over a national top-20 team and won for the first time in the series after nine previous losses.

Best, who became the fifth player in program history to score 100 career goals in the contest, extended her goal-scoring streak to 38 games in a row, the nation’s fourth-longest mark. She is fifth among the conference leaders in scoring at 3.62 points per game and has 23 goals and six assists.

Katie Neer, a senior goalkeeper from Baldwinsville, N.Y., was named America East Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Neer made 15 saves, including three in the overtime period, against New Hampshire. She sealed the outcome by stopping Sarah Von Bargen’s free-position attempt with 28.1 seconds remaining. Neer, who is averaging 9.25 saves per game, has turned aside 10 or more shots on eight occasions during her career.

University of Albany's Joe Resetarits Named America East Lacrosse Rookie of the Week for Third Time - UAlbany Sports 2009

Cambridge, Mass. – University at Albany’s Joe Resetarits has been tabbed America East Conference Rookie of the Week in men’s lacrosse, as announced on Monday, March 23 by the conference office. Resetarits had three goals and one assist in an 18-11 loss to No. 5 Princeton on March 20.

Resetarits, a freshman from Hamburg, N.Y., has netted three or more goals against four opponents this season. He is third on the team in scoring with 18 points (15 goals, 3 assists), plus has a .455 shooting percentage.

Despite last Friday’s loss to fifth-ranked Princeton, UAlbany is still among the national top-20 teams in both lacrosse polls. The Great Danes are tied for 20th in the USILA Coaches’ Poll, while Nike/Inside Lacrosse has them listed at No. 18. Brian Caufield, a sophomore attack, is among the NCAA Division I scoring leaders at 4.33 goals per game. Caufield has 14 goals and 12 assists this season. UAlbany (4-2) opens America East play at Binghamton on March 28 at 7:00 p.m.

UNC Greensboro Rallies With Five Runs in Eighth to Defeat Baseball, 10-6

Greensboro, N.C. – Brent O’Berry went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs batted in to lead UNC Greensboro past UAlbany, 10-6, in non-conference baseball action at the UNCG Baseball Stadium on Sunday, March 22. The Spartans rallied from behind for the second time in the three-game set with five runs in the eighth to complete the series sweep.

Spartan pitcher Alex Shelton issued three walks to open the game. With one out and the bases still loaded, the Great Danes took a 1-0 advantage when Brendan Rowland hit a sacrifice fly to right which plated Gary Pitcheralle.

UNC Greensboro (7-9) answered back in the bottom of the second inning with four runs. O’Berry hit a two-run single with the bases full to put the Spartans ahead by a run, and Pedro Leon followed with a double to score two more.

UAlbany (2-13) trimmed the Spartan lead down to one in the fourth inning, and then tied the game in the fifth. Rowland belted a single to center which plated Ryan Gugel, and the junior made it a one-run game when he scored on a wild pitch. Dave West’s RBI single to left with two down in the fifth frame knotted up the game at four runs apiece.

The Great Danes took their first lead in the top of the fifth. Rowland led off with a double, and was sacrificed over to third by Ralph Keppler. He scored on the next play courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Sean Donovan. One frame later, UAlbany doubled its advantage when West singled to left with two outs.

However, the Spartans battled back once again to regain the lead with one run in the sixth and five more in the eighth. O’Berry hit a pair of RBI singles in the sixth and eighth frames to tie the game at six, and Leon singled through the left side to put his team ahead by a run. Sean Gregory was replaced by Dave Noble on the mound, but Corey Overholtzer kept the rally going by singling to left which sent in the eighth Spartan run.

UNC Greensboro continued to play small ball offensively, as a single up the middle by Trevor Edwards scored two more runs before Ed Jayjack lined out to end the inning. The Great Danes went down in order in the top of the ninth.

UAlbany’s Austin Chase got the starting nod in a game which featured three lead changes. He surrendered five hit and four runs which were all earned in three innings of work. Gregory fell to 1-2 after being credited with the loss in 4.2 innings of relief. He gave up six hits and five runs while striking out six. Noble recorded the final out after he surrendered three hits and one earned run.

Despite giving up just one hit over the opening 2.2 innings, UNC Greensboro’s Shelton issued six walks and gave up three earned runs before being relieved by Ian Phillips in the third. Blake Hassebrock entered the game in the fourth, and surrendered three hits and two runs. Rob Gilliam pitched the final four frames to earn the victory and improve to 1-2 this year, striking out six while only allowing the Great Danes to score one run which was unearned.

UAlbany will return to action on Wednesday, March 25 for its home opener versus Marist at 3 p.m.

University of Albany Women's Lacrosse Wins in OT Victory Against #13 New Hampshire - UAlbany Sports 2009

Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder Mel Rorie scored with one minute and 11 seconds left in overtime, as UAlbany upset No. 13 New Hampshire, 16-15, in the America East Conference opener for both teams on Saturday, March 21 at John Fallon Field. The Great Danes posted their first victory over a national top-20 team and won for the first time in the series after nine previous losses.

New Hampshire (6-3, AE 0-1) trailed 12-5 in the second half, but then countered with seven of the game’s next eight goals. Freshman midfielder Kate Keagins ignited that run with three of her team-high six goals. Keagins found the net off a rebound when Shaunna Kaplan’s initial shot hit the crossbar, before all-conference attacker Sarah Von Bargen converted a sidearm delivery in a free-position situation to close the gap to 13-12 with 7:01 left.

UAlbany (3-5, AE 1-0) upped its lead to a two-goal margin when Rorie hit the left side of the net on a free-position attempt. The Wildcats, who are ranked No. 13 in both the IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse polls, forced an extra period with a pair of goals in a 50-second span. Von Bargen, the nation’s fifth-leading scorer, tallied her 41st of the season and then set up the tying goal with 1:32 to play. After a UAlbany turnover, Von Bargen ran down the ground ball and drove into the scoring area before sending a backwards pass for Keagins to finish into the net.

In the overtime, the Great Danes struck first as freshman Melanie Sosnowski sent a blast into the top left corner off a feed from Rory Redmond. UNH won the following draw and drew even 18 seconds later when Kaplan connected from Michaela Hardy. Rorie scored the game-winner when she drove around a defender and fired from the right into the left side of the net. Goalkeeper Katie Neer sealed the verdict when she stopped Von Bargen’s free-position shot with 28.1 seconds remaining.

“This was the game we have been trying to play all year,” said UAlbany coach Lindsay Hart, whose teams had dropped their previous 13 meetings with national top-20 squads. “It was a new situation for us to be in a close game with a team of that caliber. We got unsure and shaky. But we fought for 66 minutes and were able to get the ball to familiar sticks.”

The Great Danes, who were also playing in their home opener after seven consecutive road games, roared to a 10-0 lead in the opening 22-plus minutes. Kayla Best, who tied a career-high scoring total with three goals and four assists, did all of her offensive work in that stretch. Jodi Battaglia added all three of her goals in that start. UAlbany grabbed a 4-0 advantage when Best’s stick-check caused a turnover and led to Julie Bush’s goal. Best, who has scored a goal in 38 consecutive games, gave her team an 8-0 lead by converting a free-postion opportunity. Taylor Frink completed dthat outburst off a restart following a UNH turnover.

The Wildcats, who came from behind to defeat Massachusetts in their last outing, scored five unanswered over the final five minutes of the first half to get back into the contest. Keagins accounted for two of those goals. Von Bargen, who scored three times, including the 150th of her career, added another.

“We went from confidence to nervousness, but in the end we pulled through,” explained Redmond, a senior midfielder who equaled a career-best total with three goals and one assist. “We took a deep breath and told ourselves that we can do this, just like we practice. It’s amazing (the win), but the most important thing it does is set a tone for conference play.”

University of Albany's Joe Greene Qualifies For NCAA East Regional Championship at Carolina Classic in Puerto Rico - UAlbany Sports 2009

Carolina, P.R. – Joe Greene qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championship in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles to lead the UAlbany men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams at the Carolina Classic in Puerto Rico on Saturday afternoon. In the first meet of the spring, the Great Danes had four event winners and five IC4A and ECAC qualifying marks.

Greene, an All-American in the event as well as the school’s record holder, posted a winning time of 51.69 seconds. Alie Beauvais met the IC4A standard, clocking in a fifth-place mark of 53.23.

The men’s team also had Wilfredo de jesus Elias qualify for the IC4A meet in the hammer throw, recording a mark of 182-feet, 3-inches. Felipe Reyes won the long jump with a leap of 22-1.75, and Ricardo Estremera, a native of San Juan, was victorious in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:56.14.

Fey Adaramola led the women’s team by factoring in to a pair of ECAC qualifying marks. She won the 200-meter dash in 24.71 seconds, and anchored the 4x400-meter relay team which finished second in 3:50.57. Melissa Lee led off with a time of 56.9, and Jenn Gurrant followed by navigating the track in 57.7. Zuliana Fontanez ran the third leg in 56.6, and Adaramola finished with a split of 59.3.

The UAlbany outdoor track and field squads will compete at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State on Friday, March 27.

Baseball Drops Second Straight Game to UNC Greensboro, 7-3

Greensboro, N.C. – Greg Smith threw six shutout innings without allowing a hit and Pedro Leon went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead UNC Greensboro past UAlbany, 7-3, at the UNCG Baseball Stadium on Saturday, March 21. The Spartans took advantage of an infield error by the Great Danes to plate five runs, including four unearned, in the bottom of the third inning and never looked back.

After an RBI double to left center by Trevor Edwards in the bottom of the first inning gave UNC Greensboro (6-9) a one-run advantage, the Spartans padded their lead with five more in the third. Quinones homered to start the frame. With two outs and the bases loaded, Brent O’Berry reached on an error by a Great Dane infielder which plated a run. The defensive miscue proved to be costly, as Leon hit a bases-clearing double to left on the next play. Only one of the five runs in the stanza was charged to UAlbany pitcher Zach Kraham.

Smith only issued one walk in four separate frames before he was relieved by Matt Parish in the seventh. Brendan Rowland led off the top half of the stanza against the new pitcher with a triple, and came home two plays later when Sean Donovan grounded out to first.

After the Spartans added one more run in the eighth, UAlbany had one last chance to rally in the top of the ninth. Rowland led off with a single up the middle, and scored the second Great Dane run two plays later when Donovan singled to center. Donovan advanced two bases on a pair of wild pitches, and was plated on Ralph Keppler grounder to second. Adam Cutspec came in as a pinch hitter with two down to try and keep the rally going, but grounded out to end the ballgame.

UAlbany’s Kraham, who pitched the first three innings, took the loss on the hill and fell to 0-1 this spring. He struck out four, issued three walks and only two of the six runs he surrendered were earned. Ryan White pitched three scoreless innings in relief, while Alexander Beaulieu gave up one run which was earned in 1.2 innings of work. Chris Hackett came in and struck out the only batter he faced for the final out in the eighth.

UNC Greensboro’s Smith only allowed four walks in separate innings to post the victory and improve to 2-2 this year. Parish gave up one run which was earned in two innings of relief. Zach Furl started the ninth, surrendering two runs and recording one out before Warren Slack sealed the win by inducing two groundouts.

UAlbany (2-12) and UNC Greensboro will conclude the three-game series in Greensboro, N.C. on Sunday, March 22 at 1 p.m.

Baseball's Late Comeback Bid Falls Short in 4-3 Loss to UNC Greensboro

Greensboro, N.C. – Ray Quinones went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run batted in as UNC Greensboro rallied from behind to defeat UAlbany, 4-3, at UNCG Stadium on Friday, March 20. The Great Danes had multiple chances to take the lead in the later innings and open the three-game series with a victory. However, the squad stranded two runners in scoring position in the sixth and ninth frames to settle for the one-run loss.

UAlbany pushed the first three runs of the game across the plate in the top of the second inning with two outs. After Jim Banks and Sean Donovan recorded singles, Michael Tirri hit a two-run double down the right field line. The freshman scored on the next play when Pete Eichner lined a single through the right side.

UNC Greensboro (5-9) took its first lead by plating four runs in the bottom of the third. With two runners on base, Corey Overholtzer singled to left center which put the Spartans on the scoreboard. After a wild pitch made it a one-run game, Quinones knotted the score at three with a triple to left center. A sacrifice fly to left by Trevor Edwards put the home team ahead for the first time.

After stranding two runners in scoring position in the sixth inning, the Great Danes made one push in the top of the ninth. With one out, Banks singled through the right side. After Peter DiResta replaced Banks as a pinch runner, Donovan followed with a double to right center. DiResta was held up at third, and UAlbany had two runners in scoring position with one out for Tirri. However, the freshman struck out swinging, and Eichner grounded out to third to end the comeback bid and the ballgame.

UAlbany’s David Kubiak was credited with the loss and dropped to 0-4 overall on the mound this spring. Two of the four runs he gave up were unearned, including the game winner. The sophomore struck out three and issued just one walk in six innings of work. Dave Noble pitched two scoreless innings in relief, and fanned one batter. UNC Greensboro’s Greg Martin improved to 1-3 this spring with the win. He gave up three runs which were all earned as well as seven hits in seven innings. Martin also struck out five batters, and did not issue any walks. Rob Gilliam pitched the final three innings for the Spartans. He surrendered two hits and recorded three strikeouts to earn his first save this season.

UAlbany (2-11) and UNC Greensboro will continue the three-game series in Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday, March 21 at 2 p.m.

Men's Lacrosse Falls to Fifth-Ranked Princeton, 18-11, in Contest Televised by ESPNU

Princeton, N.J. – Sophomore attack Jack McBride had six goals one assist, a career-high scoring total, in leading fifth-ranked Princeton to an 18-11 victory over UAlbany on Friday, March 20 at Class of 1952 Stadium. The contest was televised nationally on ESPNU.

Princeton (5-1) led 11-7 midway through the third quarter, but then pulled away with three unanswered. Chris McBride, Jack’s cousin, connected low on an underhanded shot from the right side. After UAlbany switched goalkeepers, the Tigers continued their decisive run when Rich Sgalardi fired in a shot around a screen. Mark Kovler, who matched a career-best with four goals, then found the net with a two-man advantage.

The Tigers, who are No. 5 in both the USILA and Nike/Inside Lacrosse polls, were ahead 15-9 in the final period, but then added three in a row. Kovler sent a laser beam past back-up goalkeeper Dan McKeon with 10:40 to play. Jack McBride, last year’s Ivy League rookie of the year, then scored twice, including one by beating a defensive double-team and another off a failed clear.

“I watched their Johns Hopkins game on tape, but that was their best shooting performance of the season,” said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose team moved up to No. 17 in both national polls on Monday. “You can’t make mistakes against a team of that quality. They capitalized on everything that we did wrong.”

Princeton reversed a 2-1 deficit in the first quarter with three consecutive goals. Josh Lesko, a senior midfielder, put his team ahead in an unsettled situation when a UAlbany defender fell down and Tommy Davis set up the shot with a diagonal pass. Jack McBride scored the second of three first-half goals when he drove around the cage and converted from right of the crease.

UAlbany (4-2) would later close within 5-4 when Brian Caufield, who had three goals and one assist, cut to the middle of zone and sent Joe Resetarits’ feed into the top left corner. But the Tigers came right back 22 seconds later when Joe Pompo mishandled a pass near the crease and Lesko turned that miscue into a transition scoring play as he went low into the net.

The Tigers, who avenged last year’s eight-goal loss in the Capital Region, led by two after one quarter and still were in front 7-5 midway through the second period. Jack McBride moved a long clearing pass to the middle of the field and found Chris McBride at the top of the crease with 5:14 left in the stanza. Kovler gave his team a four-goal halftime cushion 50 seconds later when he worked his way to the right and blasted a 15-yard shot into the far low corner.

Chris McBride had a career day with four goals and one assist, while freshman goalkeeper Tyler Fiorito made 13 saves. Resetarits had three goals and one assist for the Great Danes, who last played on this field in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament. UAlbany was without the services of leading goal-scorer Corey Small who did not travel due to a lower leg injury

“We need to graduate from our mistakes,” explained Marr, whose club begins America East Conference play on March 28 at Binghamton. “We have to clear the ball better and not go offsides at critical times This loss makes the league even more important. “

University of Albany, Northeast Conference & Gridiron Champions, Begin Spring Football Practice on March 21 - UAlbany Sports

Albany, N.Y. – UAlbany will begin spring football practice on Saturday, March 21. The first workout is from 10:00 a.m.-12 noon. The 15 NCAA-allowed practices run through April 18. In addition, wide receiver Tim Bush has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Bush, a first-team All-Northeast Conference selection, received a medical hardship waiver based on an injury suffered when he was a member of the Hudson Valley Community College program. In 2008, Bush set UAlbany’s single-season record with 67 receptions for 794 yards and five touchdowns. Outside linebacker Dave Nicomini, who is playing lacrosse this spring, previously was awarded a sixth year after missing all of last season with a severe knee injury. The Great Danes are coming off their second consecutive Northeast Conference championship and a Gridiron Classic title.



2009 SPRING PREVIEW

UAlbany put together its most celebrated season at the NCAA Division I FCS level by winning its second consecutive Northeast Conference championship and becoming the first NEC program to be crowned Gridiron Classic champions. The Great Danes will try to build on that momentum with 14 starters returning.

Head coach Bob Ford, the active FCS leader with 234 career victories, has 48 letterwinners back from last year's 9-3 squad. Spring practice will provide the coaching staff with the ability to evaluate personnel.

"The spring will allow us to work on being more physical and our mental toughness," offers Ford, who was named NEC coach of the year for the third time last season. "We need to look at our offensive line, but I think we have enough talent to get the job done. We will look at personnel and try packages for different players."

Ford continues, "On defense, we need to solidify our defensive tackle situation and who our fourth cornerback will be. On special teams, I want to take a look at field goals and identify another punt returner."

The Great Danes will conduct 15 NCAA-allowed spring practices. The schedule runs through April 18.



OFFENSE: All-America tailback David McCarty leads an offensive unit that averaged more than 26 points and 363 yards per game. McCarty, who was named to the Sports Network All-America squad for the second year in a row, rushed for a school-record 1,852 yards and 13 touchdowns. McCarty set another standard with eleven 100-yard efforts, including 271 on the ground in the Gridiron Classic win against Jacksonville. Justin Gannon, a second-team All-NEC kick returner, accounted for 973 all-purpose yards last season. Gannon, a senior who works behind McCarty, ran for 200 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Vinny Esposito continued to improve in his second season as a starter. He passed for 1,934 yards, the second-best figure in program history, and 13 touchdowns and upped his accuracy to a 60.3 completion percentage. Esposito also ran for 148 yards and 10 scores.

The Great Danes will have to reconfigure their offensive line following the graduation of one All-American and two all-league performers. Center Kevin Richards (6-2, 270) made his second straight appearance on the second-team All-NEC unit. Andrew Stevens (6-4, 275) was solid in his first year starting at left guard for a rushing offense that ranked 16th nationally.

UAlbany's Tim Bush returns after being granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. The first-team all-conference receiver caught 67 passes, a school record, for 794 yards and five touchdowns. Jason Poore grabbed 15 passes for 146 yards and one TD. The Great Danes will also need to examine the tight end position. Fullbacks Justin Petersen and Chris Kenneally were reliable as H-backs, as the pair combined for 16 receptions.



DEFENSE: The Great Danes were dominant at times on defense last season, as evidenced in the shutout of Pioneer League champion Jacksonville. The final six opponents were all held under 300 total yards.

Trevor Anderson (6-2, 285) is ready to step in for All-America defensive tackle Tom Pandolf. The junior had 37 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Mike Kelly (52 tackles) and Tony Sparano, who had 18 hits despite playing half the season due to injury, were productive defensive ends. Eddie Delaney (6-6, 235) earned a spot on the all-league second team as a redshirt freshman. Delaney, who plays with one hand, totaled 37 tackles and six pass deflections.

UAlbany allowed 14.9 points per game in conference play. Justin Brancaccio (6-0, 230), a first-team All-NEC inside linebacker, was one reason why. He led the team with 91 tackles. Chris Simpson, who moved back inside last year, added 38 tackles.

The Great Danes appear to be loaded at outside linebacker. Emerson Kinsey (6-1, 215), who may experiment at safety in the spring after making 25 tackles, and Rich Duff (46 tackles) were last year's starters. Dave Nicomini (6-3, 230) missed all of last season with a knee injury. He earned first-team All-NEC honors in 2007. Chris Blais saw his first time on the outside and made 31 tackles.

UAlbany's secondary is led by All-ECAC standout Dave Casale, who recorded the most interceptions by a UA defender since 1990 with seven. Casale, a fierce hitter, was second on the team with 74 tackles. Ross Bertrand (36 tackles, 4 PBUs) and Jean Juste (27 tackles, 3 PBUs) are proven cornerbacks. Sophomore Daniel Avery totaled 17 tackles, four pass break-ups and two interceptions.

KICKING GAME: Sophomore Herb Glass was third on the squad in scoring with 51 points. He made 33 of 36 PATs and 6 of 13 field goals and handled kickoffs. UAlbany will have to replace a record-setting punter.

Four NCAA Tournament Teams Highlight 2009 University of Albany Men's Soccer Schedule - UAlbany Sports

Albany, N.Y. – University at Albany Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy announced on Wednesday, March 18 the school’s men’s soccer schedule for the 2009 season. The Great Danes will play a 17-match schedule, which includes four teams that advanced to last year’s NCAA Tournament.

UAlbany’s nine-game non-conference slate features six teams that advanced to their conference championship match and three that won a league title to clinch an NCAA automatic berth. In addition, each of the nine squads posted a winning percentage of .500 or better last year.

The Great Danes open the fall at home against Northeastern on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. The Huskies posted a record of 7-5-9 last year, falling to George Mason, 1-0, in the Colonial Athletic Association championship match.

The following weekend, UAlbany will compete in a tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina along with Virginia Commonwealth. The Great Danes will face VCU on Sept. 4 and Coast Carolina, the runner-up team in the Big South Conference after suffering a double-overtime defeat in the league title match, on Sept. 6.

The Great Danes will return home for a pair of games against two squads that competed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. UAlbany will host Colgate of the Patriot League on Friday, Sept. 11 and Fairfield of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Sunday, Sept. 13. Both games are slated to kick off at 4 p.m.

One week later, the squad will head to Philadelphia for a tournament co-hosted by Pennsylvania and Temple. The Quakers, who won the Ivy League crown last season, will host the Great Danes on Friday, Sept. 18. UAlbany will close out the tournament at Temple on Sunday, Sept. 20.

The non-conference slate concludes with away matches at crosstown-rival Siena on Wednesday, Sept. 23 and Holy Cross on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The Crusaders fell to Colgate in the Patriot League championship final last year.

UAlbany opens up America East Conference play against Hartford on Saturday, Oct. 3. Conference opponents New Hampshire, Maine and Boston University, which advanced to the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, will also visit Varsity Field. The Great Danes will match up against Binghamton, Vermont, Stony Brook and UMBC on the road.

Head coach Johan Aarnio enters his 10th season at the helm of the Great Dane program. He will oversee a club which returns five starters, headlined by Claudio Dantas, who was named the program’s first America East striker of the year. Last year’s squad finished 12-4-2 overall, which matched a Division I program record set in 2004. The team’s nine-win improvement tied for third in the nation. In addition, the Great Danes’ seven-game unbeaten streak before suffering a 1-0 double overtime loss to Binghamton in the semifinal round of the conference tournament was a program standard in the club’s Division I history.

University of Albany's Brian Caufield Is Nike/Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week - UAlbany Sports 2009

Albany Great Danes sophomore Brian Caufield earned Nike/Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week honors after posting a combined seven goal, six assist performance in wins over UMass and Drexel last week.

Caufield posted three goals, including a game-winning third quarter notch, and four assists in a 12-9 win over UMass Tuesday. Against Drexel, he racked up four goals and two assists in a 13-11 road win over the Dragons Saturday.

The Sophomore earned America East Player of the Week honors for his effort.

UAlbany Men's Soccer Announces 2009 Spring Schedule

Albany, N.Y. – The UAlbany men’s soccer team has announced its 2009 spring schedule. Head coach Johan Aarnio and the Great Danes will compete in three tournaments on the road and play three matches at home on Varsity Field.

UAlbany’s non-traditional schedule begins on Saturday, March 28 at Binghamton University, where the Great Danes will scrimmage against Syracuse and Binghamton. The squad will return home to face Central Connecticut State on Saturday, April 4.

The Great Danes will then play in two more tournaments on the road. UAlbany will head to Colgate for a pair of contests on Saturday, April 11. Aarnio’s club will play Buffalo to start the day, and then face either Colgate or Cornell in the second match.

On Saturday, April 18, UAlbany will compete at the Massachusetts College Classic in Lancaster, Mass. The Great Danes will play two matches against a pair of opponents to be determined. Boston University, Central Connecticut State, Hartford, Providence and Quinnipiac are all scheduled to be in attendance.

The spring season wraps up with two home dates. UAlbany will face Hartwick on Saturday, April 25 before finishing with an Alumni Game on Saturday, May 2.

Albany, N.Y. – The UAlbany women’s soccer team has announced its 2009 spring schedule. Head coach Mary-Frances Monroe and the Great Danes will compete in three tournaments and conclude the short season with a scrimmage on the road.

UAlbany’s non-traditional schedule begins on Saturday, March 28 when the Great Danes travel for a tournament hosted by Hofstra. UAlbany will play matches against Long Island, Iona and St. Peter’s. The Great Danes will then embark on a trip to play in a 7-on-7 tournament hosted by Central Connecticut State on Saturday, April 4.

Two weeks later, UAlbany will welcome Cornell, Syracuse, Colgate and Saint Rose to Varsity Field for a tournament on Saturday, April 18. The round-robin event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The spring season will conclude on Saturday, March 25 with a scrimmage at Marist.

University of Albany Men's Lacrosse Registers At #17 In Three Major Lacrosse Polls Today - UAlbany Sports 2009

After a week of beating ranked UMass and Drexel, the Great Danes are catching the eyes of the collegiate lacrosse world again. In three national polls released today, UAlbany is ranked #17 in the nation. With only one loss this season (a one goal loss), UAlbany lacrosse posts a record of 4-1.

University of Albany's Caufield & Resetarits Receive America East Conference Weekly Lacrosse Awards - UAlbany Sports 2009

Cambridge, Mass. – University at Albany’s Brian Caufield has been chosen America East Conference Player of the Week in men’s lacrosse, as announced on Monday, March 16 by the league office. Joe Resetarits was named Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.

Caufield, a sophomore attack from Bay Shore, N.Y., accounted for 13 points (7 goals, 6 assists) in victories over No. 13 Massachusetts and Drexel last week. He matched the second-highest scoring total of his career with three goals and four assists in a 12-9 victory over the Minutemen. He broke an 8-8 deadlock with 59 seconds left in the third quarter and tallied an extra-man goal early in the final period. Caufield also had four goals and two assists in a 13-11 win at Drexel. Caufield has scored six or more points on four occasions as a collegian.

Resetarits, a freshman from Hamburg, N.Y., totaled seven goals and one assist in last week’s two games. He netted a career-high five goals, including two in the decisive fourth quarter, against nationally-ranked Massachusetts. Resetarits had two goals and one assist, all in the second half, at Drexel. He reversed an 8-7 deficit with back-to-back goals in the third stanza. His drive from behind the cage put the Great Danes ahead for good with 47 seconds left in the quarter. A two-time high school All-American, Resetarits is second on the team with 12 goals this season.



Paw Prints: After defeating No. 13 Massachusetts and Drexel last week, UAlbany has moved back into the top 20 in both national men’s lacrosse polls on Monday. The Great Danes are ranked No. 17 in the USILA and Nike/Inside Lacrosse polls.

UAlbany (4-1) is off to its second-best start as a Division I program. The Great Danes began the 2007 campaign with eleven consecutive victories. UAlbany travels to Princeton, ranked fifth in both national polls, on Friday, March 20. Face-off is 3:05 p.m. The contest will air live on ESPNU, with Eamon McAnaney and Stephen McElduff handling play-by-play duties. Princeton (4-1) has already defeated national top-10 programs Johns Hopkins and UMBC this season.

University of Albany's Katie Wambold Named America East Softball Rookie of the Week - UAlbany Sports 2009

Cambridge, Mass. – University at Albany’s Katie Wambold has been chosen America East Conference Rookie of the Week in softball, as announced by the league office on Monday, March 16. The freshman is being recognized for the first time by the conference.

Wambold, a designated player, hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh which gave the Great Danes all the insurance they would need in a 10-2 victory over George Mason on March 15. She also scored a run and stole a base to help her team improve to 11-7 overall and win for the fifth time in the last six tries. In 14 appearances and nine starts, the native of Hatboro, Pa. has recorded six hits and driven in four runs this season.

University of Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering To Host Trio Of Prestigious Global Nanotechnology Conferences

The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering ("CNSE") of the University at Albany announced today that it will host three prestigious global nanotechnology conferences this year that will bring hundreds of leading faculty, scientists and researchers from around the world to CNSE's Albany NanoTech Complex.

The 2009 International Conference on Frontiers of Characterization and Metrology for Nanoelectronics, to be held May 11 through 15, is regarded as the world's premier forum on metrology and characterization. Presented by the National Institute of Standards and Technology ("NIST"), the conference focuses on frontiers and innovations in characterization and metrology of nanoelectronics, addressing major issues and providing critical reviews of important techniques needed to keep pace amid the growing integration of nanoscale technologies.

The acceleration of nanoscale solutions for energy applications will be the focus of an event to be held April 26 through 28. Nanoscale Measurement Challenges for Energy Applications Global Workshop, presented jointly by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers ("ASME"), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory ("NREL"), NIST and CNSE will explore the challenges involving measurement of properties at the nanoscale for use in alternative energy technologies, low-cost energy production and increased energy efficiency.

And, CNSE will partner with the National Center for Learning and Teaching ("NCLT") in Nanotechnology at Northwestern University to host the Symposium on Advances in Higher Education in Nanoscale Science and Engineering from August 5 through 8. The conference will convene experts in higher education to assess the current state of nanoscale science and engineering education and chart a course for the future.

University of Albany's Trudi E. Jacobson wins the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Award

Trudi E. Jacobson, head of user education programs at the University at Albany, is the winner of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Instruction Section’s (IS) Miriam Dudley Instruction Librarian Award.

The award honors Miriam Dudley, whose efforts in the field of information literacy led to the formation of IS. The honor recognizes a librarian who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of instruction in a college or research library environment.

Elsevier Publishing sponsors the award on behalf of its library and information science program. A check for $1,000 and a plaque will be presented to Jacobson on Sunday, July 12, at the 2009 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.

“For over 20 years Trudi Jacobson has strengthened and deepened scholarly conversations about information literacy via her many publications, both within and beyond the literature of our librarianship,” said Jean Caspers, chair of the IS Dudley Award committee and reference and instruction librarian at Linfield College. “Her generosity in sharing knowledge has extended to presentations and workshops locally, regionally and nationally, again including but not limited to audiences within the library profession, thus spreading the word about information literacy across traditional academic boundaries.”

Jacobson teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and has developed exemplary library instruction programs. She is regularly sought out as a consultant about information literacy issues.

She has been an active contributor within ALA since 1980, holding official positions in IS, the ACRL Arts section and the ACRL Information Literacy Advisory Committee.

Jacobson was the recipient of the IS 2005 Publication of the Year Award for “Motivating Students in Information Literacy Classes,” a book she co-authored with Lijuan Xu. She has published eight additional books, eight book chapters and more than 30 journal articles.

Jacobson received a master’s degree in liberal studies from the University at Albany, where she also earned a master’s in library science and a bachelor’s in linguistics and anthropology.

University of Albany's Brian Caufield & Corey Small Combine on Seven Goals in Lacrosse's 13-11 Win Against Drexel - UAlbany Sports 2009

Philadelphia, Pa. – Brian Caufield had four goals and Corey Small scored three times as UAlbany posted its fourth straight victory in a 13-11 triumph over Drexel on Saturday, March 14 at Vidas Field. The Great Danes upped their record to 4-1 and are off to the program’s second-best start at the Division I level.

Greg Casey scored back-to-back goals 41 seconds apart in the third quarter to give Drexel (2-4) an 8-7 lead. Casey, an All-Colonial Athletic Association midfielder who had a career game with four goals and two assists, put his team ahead in an unsettled situation with 5:01 to play.

The Great Danes regrouped with three unanswered to end the period. Freshman Joe Resetarits tallied consecutive goals, including a drive from behind the cage to score while falling down to regain the lead with 47 seconds left in the quarter. Caufield, who added two assists in the contest, gave his squad a 10-8 lead 30 seconds later on a shot from the top.

UAlbany won the opening face-off of the final stanza and Marc Cometti found the net with a low shot from the left side 51 seconds into the quarter. Joe Pompo extended the margin to 12-8 three minutes later with a blast from the left point. The Dragons sliced that lead in half with extra-man goals by Joe Wojciechowski and leading-scorer Kyle Bergman.

Small, who also handed out two assists, scored from the top of the crease for a 13-10 lead with 6:44 remaining. Drexel’s Colin Ambler found an open net when a clearing pass sailed over the goalkeeper’s head. From there, freshman goalkeeper John Carroll made three saves, including one in a man-down situation to preserve the lead. Carroll turned aside a career-high 17 shots.

“We started slow and grinded it out,” said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose 2007 team began its season with eleven wins in a row. “We had a tough time clearing the ball, but we played sixty minutes. Joe Resetarits came up with a good individual effort (in the third quarter) and that swung the momentum.”

The Dragons, who won last year’s matchup, 7-6, at John Fallon Field, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes. UAlbany still trailed 3-2 early in the second quarter, but then ran off three unanswered. Matt Johnson and Small each scored with a man-advantage in that run. Wojciechowski’s second goal of the game tied the contest at five apiece, before Caufield’s extra-man goal put his team ahead at the intermission.

In the third quarter, Kevin Dart’s unassisted tally tied the contest with 12:13 remaining. UAlbany’s Small, who now has 121 career points and has scored at least one point in 22 consecutive games, ripped a shot into the net that glanced off the pipe for a 7-6 advantage. Casey’s consecutive goals made for the third lead change in a game that also featured six ties.

Bergman scored twice for the Dragons, who won last year’s CAA regular-season title and set a single-season record with 13 victories. UAlbany’s Caufield has scored three or more points in 12 of his last 14 starts.

University of Albany 's Kayla Best Scores Her Season-Best Four Goals Helps Lacrosse in 15-8 Win Against Temple - UAlbany Sports 2009

Philadelphia, Pa. – Kayla Best equaled a season-high with four goals and Mel Rorie scored three times, all in the first half, in leading UAlbany to a 15-8 victory over Temple on Sunday, March 15. The Great Danes ended a five-game skid since winning their season opener.

UAlbany (2-5) ripped off eight unanswered in the opening 17 minutes. Rorie, a sophomore midfielder, scored twice on plays that started with Temple turnovers for a 3-0 lead. The Great Danes then netted goals 44 seconds apart. Freshman Melanie Sosnowski set up Taylor Frink, before Nikki Branchini won the following draw leading to Best’s unassisted goal.

The Great Danes ended that first-half run by scoring twice in a 55-second span. Frink tallied her second goal of the game on an unassisted shot with 13:55 left in the period. After Christine Grueniger gathered in the subsequent draw, Jodi Battaglia converted a free-position opportunity.

Temple (0-5) closed within 10-5 in the second half when Lauren Fisher scored her second goal on an unassisted play. The Great Danes, who were meeting the defending Atlantic 10 Conference champion for the first time in the program’s history, answered with a pair of goals over the next three minutes. Best, who extended her goal-scoring streak to 37 consecutive games, won the following draw control and drove all the way to the cage for her 20th goal of the season. Defender Tricia Primomo’s ground ball led to a scoring sequence where Frink found Battaglia for a 12-5 advantage with 12:54 remaining.

“We came to the game with a lot of energy and were excited to play today,” said UAlbany coach Lindsey Hart, whose team had lost its previous three games by a combined four goals. “We moved the ball well and communicated. We had off-the-ball movement that created options and we were able to hit connecting passes.”
UC Davis transfer Olivia Jarem made her first appearance after being sidelined with an injury since Feb. 18. Jarem, a junior midfielder, scored her first points as a Great Dane with three goals, including two in the final half. Frink added two goals and one assist. Melissa Schweitzer and Keelin Hood each scored a pair for the Owls, who were picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll.

University of Albany's Michelle Connors Records Three Hits in Softball's 10-2 Win Over George Mason - UAlbany Sports 2009

Fairfax, Va. – Junior Michelle Connors went 3-for-4 and classmate Kat Smith drove in three runs in leading the UAlbany softball team to a decisive 10-2 road victory over George Mason on Sunday, March 15. Trailing by two through four innings, The Great Danes recorded their fifth win in the last six games by plating five runs in the fifth and another five in the final two frames.

Batting with the bases loaded and a five-run lead, freshman Katie Wambold broke the game open in the top of the seventh with a two-RBI single to center field. She scored the 10th run for the Great Danes on the next play when Kat Smith doubled down the right field line. Junior pitcher Leah McIntosh then retired the next three batters to close out the game and stay undefeated this spring.

After hurling four shutout innings, freshman Miranda Cranford helped herself out by drilling a two-run homer to right center which gave George Mason (11-11) a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning. Becky Anderson continued the stanza by singling to second base before McIntosh was able to retire the next two batters to end the frame.

UAlbany responded by batting around in the top half of the fifth to push across five runs. After Jess Bergin led off with a single, Kayla Cilley drew a walk to put two on with no outs. Kat Smith grounded out to first on the next play, but Bergin was able to score while pinch runner Stephanie Talerico made it safely to third. Kothe then drew a walk before stealing second. Andrianna Walraven also earned a free pass to load the bases, which set the stage for Kristine Bill.

The sophomore came through for the Great Danes with a two-RBI single to right, plating Talerico and Kothe. Bill advanced to second on the throw home, and Walraven stopped at third. Michelle Connors continued the rally by singling to center to score Walraven, and advanced to second. Bill closed out the scoring in the inning when she came home on the next play while Meagan Butsch was caught in a rundown, giving the squad all the insurance it would need to hold on for the eight-run victory.

UAlbany’s McIntosh was credited with the victory to improve to 9-0 this season. She struck out 15 while allowing five hits, two runs which were earned and issuing just one walk. After George Mason's Cranford pitched four scoreless innings, Anderson was tabbed with the defeat for surrendering 10 runs as well as eight hits and five walks. The Patriots’ pitchers combined to strike out four.

UAlbany (11-7), which had its tournament at Winthrop rained out over the weekend, will return to action for its home opener against crosstown-rival Siena on Wednesday, March 25. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
