Women's Lacrosse Drops 11-9 Decision to UMBC in America East Conference Semifinal Round

Albany, N.Y. - Sophomore attack Emily Coady had three of her four goals in the second half, as UMBC knocked off top seed UAlbany, 11-9, in the semifinals of the America East Conference Tournament on Thursday, May 6 at John Fallon Field. UMBC will meet five-time defending champion Boston University, a 10-6 winner in its semifinal, in Saturday's championship.

UMBC (11-6) trailed by three at the break, but regrouped with three unanswered to draw even at five apiece. Alicia Krause intercepted Christine Grueniger's pass at the top of the scoring zone and drove the length of the field to find the net. Amanda Pappas tied the contest by converting a bounce shot in a free-position situation.

UAlbany (13-3) went back in front when Melanie Sosnowski drove between two defenders and hit the upper left corner. The Retrievers answered with four consecutive goals over the next 10 minutes. Pappas tied the contest with a bounce shot, before Coady put her team ahead by working on a defender and spinning to her right shoulder. Coady slid across the top of the crease, moving right to left, for a two-goal margin. Bria Phillips ended the run by driving in the middle and placing a shot just under the crossbar.

The Great Danes, who won the conference regular-season title for the first time since joining the league in 2002, fought back with back-to-back goals by Olivia Jarem and Grueniger. Jarem fired a free-position shot to right of the goalkeeper, before Grueniger sent another free-position chance inside the left post with 3:58 remaining.

The Retrievers, who avenged an 11-10 loss to UAlbany on their home field during the regular schedule, thwarted any comeback attempt with a pair of goals 32 seconds apart. Lindsay Cox drove into the middle of the zone and sent a high shot into the cage. Coady scored on a wraparound, moving from behind to the left of the cage, for an 11-8 lead with 2:20 to play.

"Draw controls are obviously a big part of the game," UAlbany goalkeeper Ashley Ross explained. "When we are not getting in our attack, it is kind of hard to play defense for the whole second half. It is very frustrating to live through, but UMBC is a good team. If they get on a run, they seem to get going. We didn't do enough to step up and stop those runs."

The Great Danes built a 4-0 lead midway through the first half. Grueniger took a pass from Taylor Fink, one of her three assists on the day, and scored from left of the crease with one minute and 23 seconds elapsed. Jarem then split two defenders on a drive from the left side. Rachael Burek and Grueniger found the net 19 seconds apart to complete the outburst. Nikki Branchini keyed the fourth goal when she won the draw that led to the scoring play.

Ashley Stodter, who scored twice, converted a free-position attempt that bounced under the crossbar to get the Retrievers on the scoreboard. UMBC cut the deficit to 5-2 by halftime when Meagan Linkous caused a turnover that led to Coady's fastbreak goal with 19.3 seconds remaining in the period.

"It was an interesting game," offered UAlbany's Lindsey Hart, the America East coach of the year. "I think the tough thing was that early on we probably should have been up more (than we were). We played a lot of defense in the first half, and I think it just wore us down a little bit. I think we really never got into our groove. Even when we were up by a couple, we were concerned and we weren't clicking. They were fighting as hard as they could, but it just wouldn't come through for us today."

UAlbany's Grueniger and Jarem each had three goals, while Ross stopped a career-best 13 shots. UMBC goalkeeper Kate Quick made eight saves.

"It was an awesome four years playing with these girls and for Lindsey (Hart)," said UAlbany senior Kayla Best, who finished her career second on the all-time scoring list. "I will look back four years down the road and I'm sure that (the program) will win the America East (championship). I will then be able to say, ‘hey, I was a part of that.' It was a great experience."

University of Albany Men's Lacrosse Upends UMBC In America East Semifinals; Meets Stony Brook for Championship - UAlbany Sports 2010

Baltimore, Md. - Dave Brock scored two second-half goals and goalkeeper John Carroll made 11 saves, as UAlbany upended UMBC, 11-7, in the semifinal round of the America East Conference Championship on Wednesday, May 5 at UMBC Stadium. The Great Danes, the tournament's third seed, will travel to top seed Stony Brook for the conference title game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

UAlbany (5-10) doubled its halftime lead by blanking the second-seeded Retrievers in the third quarter. Matt Johnson connected on a hard bounce shot midway through the period. Brock canned an extra-man goal just over one minute later when he rolled around midfielder Michael Bryan from the left for an 8-4 advantage.

Rob Grimm, who had three goals and one assist, put UMBC (4-9) on the scoreboard first in the final period when he cut to the top of the crease to finish off Maxx Davis' right-to-left crossing pass. But the Great Danes came back with pair of goals to post their biggest lead. After a Retriever turnover and a delay-of-game penalty, Rocky Bonitatibus drilled a shot into the net with a man-advantage. Brock picked up a loose ball in the middle of the zone and sent a sidearm delivery past goalie Adam Cohen for a 10-5 margin with 5:24 to play. Matt Kehoe hit an empty net against a defensive double-team two minutes to seal the outcome.

"We switched between zone and man (defenses) and that kept them off balance," said defenseman Mark Kelly, who collected five ground balls and caused two turnovers. "(John) Carroll made some big saves. Our intensity was high and we played with pride."

The Great Danes, who had lost five straight on this field to UMBC, including a 12-7 decision during the regular season, erased an early 1-0 deficit by scoring four times in a span of one minute and 41 seconds. Freshman Mike Woods tallied his first as a collegian from the right to put his team ahead after defenseman Brendan Gleason picked up a turnover and started the transition play. Jack Reynolds added the second of two first-quarter goals by dodging from the top and shooting with his left hand. Anthony Ostrander finished the run when he scored with the long pole from the left after Matt Mackenzie won the face-off.

UMBC's Chris Jones scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to one by the end of the quarter. He fired a shot into the net from left against the visitors' zone defense and then wheeled to his right shoulder to score from the inside off Rob Grimm's feed. Dwayne Stewart, a redshirt freshman, kept the Great Danes in front with a pair of second-quarter goals. He blasted a 15-yard shot to right of goalkeeper Adam Cohen high into the cage, as his team took a 6-4 lead to the intermission.

"We were physical and checked hard," said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose team ended a four-game skid in the series that dated back to the 2007 conference championship game. "It was a team effort and we got contributions from everyone. Our short-stick midfielders played great one-on-one defense and were certainly a key to our success."

University of Albany Women's Lacrosse Has Seven on All-America East Team; Nikki Branchini Player of the Year - UAlbany Sports 2010

Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany's Nikki Branchini leads a group of seven players, the highest total in the program's history, who were voted to the 2010 America East All-Conference Women's Lacrosse, as announced on Wednesday, May 5 by the conference office. Branchini, the first UAlbany lacrosse player to receive a major award, was chosen America East Player of the Year, while Lindsey Hart was named Coach of the Year.

Branchini, a junior defensive midfielder from Guilderland, N.Y., is among the NCAA Division I leaders in draw controls (third, 5.1 pg), ground balls (sixth, 3.4 pg) and caused turnovers (11th, 2.1 pg). She becomes the first Great Dane to be selected as the conference's top player. She added 10 goals and three assists and had a .476 shot percentage. Branchini earned first-team all-conference honors for the third consecutive year.

Kayla Best, a senior midfielder, becomes the second UAlbany player to earn All-America East recognition four times. A native of Guilderland, N.Y., Best is on the all-league first team for the third season in a row. She has 35 goals and five assists and is sixth in the conference in goals at 2.33 per game. Best is second on the school's all-time scoring list with 187 points and third in goals with 154.

Mel Rorie, Christine Grueniger and Ashley Ross join Branchini and Best on the all-conference first team. Rorie, a second-team choice last year, has accounted for 30 goals and four assists. The Lansdale, Pa. native, is second on the team in caused turnovers (19) and game-winning goals (2). Grueniger, who has 38 goals and nine assists, is tied for second in goals and ranks fourth in points among the America East leaders. She also has four game-winners. A native of Lindenhurst, N.Y., she became the sixth Great Dane to reach the 100-career goal plateau (101) on May 1. Ross, who hails from Lancaster, Pa. and is in her first year as the program's starting goalkeeper, is fifth nationally in save percentage (.517) and seventh in goals against average (7.92). She was named conference defensive player of the week three times this season.

Taylor Frink and Jenn Primeau were each named to the All-America East second team. Frink, a junior attacker from Baldwinsville, N.Y., is second among the America East scoring leaders with 30 goals and 22 assists. She tallied five or more points against five opponents. Primeau, a sophomore defender from Niskayuna, N.Y., was a starter in all 15 games and totaled 27 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers.

In addition, six players earned a spot on the America East women's lacrosse all-academic team. Branchini is on the all-academic unit for the second straight year and is joined by Olivia Jarem, Tricia Primomo, Grueniger, Ross and Rorie. Freshman Rachael Burek was selected to the America East All-Rookie Team. She has nine goals and four assists this season.

UAlbany's Hart receives the conference's top coaching award for the first time. Hart led the Great Danes to their first-ever America East regular-season crown and the postseason championship's top seed. UAlbany established a school record for most wins in a season with a 13-2 record, breaking a mark that had stood since 1998. Hart has also guided the program to its first national ranking in the IWLCA coaches' poll (No. 19) and deBeer/Inside Lacrosse media poll (No. 17).

UAlbany has produced 36 all-conference players, including 22 first-team selections, since joining the America East Conference in the 2001-02 academic year.

University of Albany's Brendan Gleason Leads Trio of Great Danes Chosen to All-America East Men's Lacrosse Team - UAlbany Sports 2010

Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany's Brendan Gleason leads a group of three players who were chosen to the 2010 America East All-Conference Men's Lacrosse Team, as announced on Tuesday, May 4 by the conference office. Gleason, a senior defenseman, was voted to the all-conference first team.

Mark Kelly and Dave Brock earned a spot on the All-America East second team. Dwayne Stewart and Matt Mackenzie were named to the conference all-rookie team. Kyle Crotty garnered America East all-academic team recognition.

A native of Wading River, N.Y., Gleason makes his first appearance on the America East all-conference team. He is 14th nationally in caused turnovers at 1.85 per game, plus has collected 21 ground balls. He keyed a defensive unit that allowed just 9.4 goals per game in league play. Gleason collected three-plus ground balls five times and caused two-plus turnovers against seven opponents. He is the most veteran UAlbany player with 57 career appearances.

Kelly, a senior defenseman from Syracuse, N.Y., is a member of the all-conference second team for the second year in a row. He is averaging 2.71 ground balls and 1.57 caused turnovers in 14 starting assignments this year. Kelly totaled three or more ground balls against eight opponents, including a career-high six in last Saturday's 11-6 win over Binghamton. He recorded his first assists as a collegian against Ohio State and Johns Hopkins this season.

Brock is sixth in the league in goals (2.14 pg) and 10th in scoring at 2.5 points per game. A senior attackman from Burlington, Ontario, he leads the Great Danes in scoring with 30 goals and five assists. He has a .312 shooting percentage and 30 ground balls. Brock has netted three or more goals six times this season, including a career-high four against Hartford and UMBC. He also has accumulated a career-best four points against five teams. Brock had a streak of seven straight games this season where he tallied at least two goals.

A redshirt freshman from Copiague, N.Y., Stewart has improved as the spring progressed in the UAlbany midfield. He has accounted for two goals, four assists and nine ground balls in 13 games played. He recently was named America East rookie of the week when he had one goal, one assist and four ground balls against Binghamton. Mackenzie, a freshman from Stony Plain, Alberta, has taken the majority of his team's face-offs. He has a .428 percentage and won 119 of 278 draws. Mackenzie, who was named league rookie of the week in March, has one goal and three assists, plus leads the squad with 54 ground balls. The Great Danes have had 23 all-rookie team members in the program's history.

Crotty, a junior midfielder from Bethpage, N.Y., earned all-academic honors with a 3.89 cumulative grade point average. He is majoring in accounting with a minor in business administration. A 14-game starter, he has 32 ground balls and two assists. Crotty, who battled back from an injury as a sophomore, is a member of the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

UAlbany has produced 54 all-conference players, including 22 first-team selections, since joining the America East Conference in the 2001-02 academic year.

Five University of Albany Athletes Are Recipients of Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award

Albany, N.Y. - State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher recently announced five University at Albany student-athletes are recipients of the Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award for academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement. Chris Simpson (football), Valerie Sourbeer (volleyball), Valete Graham (track & field), Leah McIntosh (softball) and Nikki Branchini (lacrosse) were recognized.

Simpson, a senior inside linebacker from Victor, N.Y., has a 3.97 cumulative grade point average in physics. He is a member of UAlbany's 3+2 engineering program. He will receive his undergraduate degree from UAlbany next month and will also earn a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in May 2011. He has been a research assistant in the College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering. He was named the 2009 Northeast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the sport of football. Simpson was fourth on the team in tackles (58) as an 11-game starter on a team that finished with a 7-4 record. He had a career-high 11 tackles in his team's upset of No. 20 Maine. He received the school's 2010 Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award.

Sourbeer, a senior outside hitter from Valley Center, Calif., was chosen the 2009 America East Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the sport of volleyball. She led her team to a 22-9 record and the conference's regular-season crown. The Great Danes were undefeated in regular-season play for the second year in a row. A first-team all-conference standout, Sourbeer ranked fifth among the league leaders in both kills per game (3.09) and hitting percentage (.270). She made her second consecutive appearance on the America East all-academic squad and received UAlbany's Outstanding Senior Leadership Award. Sourbeer, who has a 3.65 GPA in business administration, received an ECAC Merit Medal as the school's top senior female student-athlete.

Graham, who has a 3.71 cumulative GPA in psychology, assisted the men's track and field program in winning a conference-record fifth consecutive America East Conference indoor championship and sixth straight conference outdoor title. He finished first in the outdoor triple jump for the third year in a row to match a league record. The senior accumulated 18 points at the conference indoor meet by finishing first in the long jump with a leap of 23-feet, 6-inches and placing second in the triple jump. He also helped the Great Danes garner their second straight indoor IC4A championship by taking fourth in the long jump and ninth in the triple jump. A two-time conference all-academic selection, Graham was named the 2010 America East Indoor Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year. He earned an ECAC Merit Medal as the UAlbany's top senior male student-athlete.

McIntosh, a senior from Whitby, Ontario, was voted 2009 America East Conference Pitcher of the Year. She was named to the All-Northeast Region and All-ECAC first teams. She is currently the program's all-time leader in strikeouts (710), plus is second in victories (53), innings pitched (513.2) and complete games (57). McIntosh, who has six career no-hitters and a 1.97 earned run average, threw a national-best four perfect games as a junior when she led the conference in ERA for the second straight year. She was a member of the 2009 Canadian Senior National Team. An Alpha Pi Alpha Scholarship recipient, McIntosh has a 3.06 GPA in psychology.

Branchini, a junior defensive midfielder on the women's lacrosse team, has a 3.81 cumulative GPA in history with a dual minor in education and criminal justice. She is presently third among the NCAA Division I leaders in draw controls (5.1 pg), plus is sixth nationally in ground balls (3.4 pg) and 11th in caused turnovers (2.1 pg). Branchini also has 10 goals and three assists for a program that has won its first-ever America East Conference regular-season title. UAlbany has already set a school standard with a 13-2 record and is ranked No. 19 in the IWLCA national poll. She earned second-team All-Northeast Region and first-team all-conference honors last year. A Class of '84 Scholarship winner, Branchini was chosen to the 2009 America East All-Academic Lacrosse Team.

University of Albany Women's Lacrosse Hosts A-East Championship; Ashley Ross Named Defender of the Week

Albany, N.Y. - University at Albany's Ashley Ross has been named America East Conference Defensive Player of the Week in women's lacrosse, as announced on Monday, May 3 by the conference office. The senior goalkeeper earned the weekly award for the third time this season.
Ross made six of her eight saves in the second half in leading her team to a 12-11 victory over Boston University on May 1. UAlbany (13-2, AE 6-0) wrapped its first-ever regular-season title in the showdown between conference unbeatens. Ross made two spectacular stops in the final two minutes of play, including saving McKinley Curro's game-tying attempt with 39 seconds remaining. Ross is among the NCAA leaders in save percentage (.517) and goals against average (7.92) in her first season as the program's starting goalie.

A redshirt freshman from Copiague, N.Y., Stewart recorded career-highs in points (2) and ground balls (4) in last Saturday's 11-6 win over Binghamton. He did all of his scoring in the fourth quarter to help his team pull away. The midfielder picked up a ground ball in front of the crease and found the net for a 9-6 lead with 5:27 remaining. He later split a defensive double-team to find Dave Brock, who connected on a behind-the-back shot. Stewart, who has played in 13 games, has two goals and four assists this season.

Paw Prints: UAlbany secured its ninth consecutive America East postseason appearance with a win over Binghamton on May 1 ... the Great Danes have won at least three conference games in all nine seasons as an America East member ... University of Albany Men's Track & Field Wins Conference-Record Sixth Straight America East Outdoor Championship - UAlbany Sports

Durham, N.H. - University at Albany's John Moore won his second consecutive 800-meter run in leading his team to a conference-record sixth straight America East Conference Outdoor Track & Field championship on Sunday, May 2 at the University of New Hampshire's Reggie F. Atkins Track & Field Facility. The Great Danes scored 190 points and were 51 ahead of second-place Binghamton.

UAlbany also won its second consecutive America East women's outdoor championship with 197.50 points. The Great Danes were propelled to victory late in the competition when Catie Coxon finished first in the discus throw with a toss of 147-feet, 11-inches and four UAlbany triple jumpers accumulated 18 points by placing third through sixth in their event.

"Winning four championships (indoor and outdoor) in one year has been our goal from the very beginning," said UAlbany's Roberto Vives, who is in his 25th year as head coach. "For this to become a reality is absolutely unbelievable. It was a total team effort on both sides. We have a lot of young people, and they all stepped up. I am just so happy for this team. Our kids really stepped up to the challenge."

In the men's meet, Moore cruised to victory in the 800-meters with a time of 1:49.97 and also posted a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (3:48.66). His teammate Tyler Fogarty was first at the 1,500 finish in 3:47.65. Valete Graham jump-started his team by winning his third consecutive America East long jump championship on Saturday with a mark of 24-feet, 7.75-inches. He is just the second athlete since Northeastern's Dave Klemic (1998-2000) to win the long jump three years in a row. Graham came back to take fifth in Sunday's triple jump (47-10).

"I only had about an hour after the 1,500 to get ready for the (800) heat," Moore explained about his 800-meter performance. "It is tough to double up like that because your legs are so tired, but I am a competitor. I was third behind Nick Santos and a runner from Boston U. (Jeff Moreau). I pushed, took the lead with 300 meters to go and never looked back."

UAlbany was victorious in two relay events on the final day. The 4x100 group of Jake Rachiele, Germain Smith, Earnest Waters and Tristan Akong edged out UMBC by three one-thousandths of a second. UAlbany was timed in 41.654 to UMBC's 41.657. The Great Danes also won the 4x800 relay in 7:35.89, with Paul Lagno running the anchor leg for Ryan Florkiewicz, Nick Santos and Sean Halpin. Freddie Wills was UAlbany's fourth individual winner. Wills cleared the high jump bar at 6-feet, 9.75-inches and has won four America East outdoor events during his career.

In the women's championship, Fey Adaramola sprinted 11.86 seconds in winning the 100-meter dash for the second straight year. The senior also anchored the 4x100-meter relay to victory in a school-record time of 46.27 seconds. Christen Griffin, Quante Harris, Alli Rogers and Adaramola became the first UAlbany 4x100 to win an America East crown and broke a five-year old school standard. Adaramola was also second in the 200-meter dash (24.19) and a member of the second-place 4x400-meter relay that eclipsed another UAlbany mark by hitting the tape in 3:45.52.

"I was nervous because there was a freshman from Maine (Cearha Miller) giving me some good competition," said Adaramola about how the 100-meter race unfolded. "I got in my blocks, focused and concentrated on running my race. My start could have been better, but my top end speed came through in the last 40 meters and that carried me to victory."

Kadine Johnson, who was second on the first day in the hammer throw, added another second-place showing in the shot put with a heave of 43-05.25. Jenn Pierson, who won the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday, was one of three individual champions. University of Albany Women's Track & Field Captures Second Consecutive America East Conference Outdoor Title - UAlbany Sports 2010

Durham, N.H. - University at Albany's Fey Adaramola won her second consecutive 100-meter dash in leading her team to the America East Conference Outdoor Track & Field championship for the second year in a row on Sunday, May 2 at the University of New Hampshire's Reggie F. Atkins Track & Field Facility. The Great Danes scored 197.50 points to defeat second-place Maine.

UAlbany was propelled to victory late in the competition when Catie Coxon finished first in the discus throw with a toss of 147-feet, 11-inches and four UAlbany triple jumpers accumulated 18 points by placing third through sixth in their event.

The Great Danes were victorious in the men's standings for a conference-record sixth consecutive year, as John Moore won his second straight 800-meter run title. UAlbany scored 190 points and were 51 ahead of second-place Binghamton.

"Winning four championships (indoor and outdoor) in one year has been our goal from the very beginning," said UAlbany's Roberto Vives, who is in his 25th year as head coach. "For this to become a reality is absolutely unbelievable. It was a total team effort on both sides. We have a lot of young people, and they all stepped up. I am just so happy for this team. Our kids really stepped up to the challenge."

In the women's championship, Adaramola sprinted 11.86 seconds in winning the 100m dash. The senior also anchored the 4x100-meter relay to victory in a school-record time of 46.27 seconds. Christen Griffin, Quante Harris, Alli Rogers and Adaramola became the first UAlbany 4x100 to win an America East crown and broke a five-year old school standard. Adaramola was also second in the 200-meter dash (24.19) and a member of the second-place 4x400-meter relay that eclipsed another UAlbany mark by hitting the tape in 3:45.52.

"I was nervous because there was a freshman from Maine (Cearha Miller) giving me some good competition," said Adaramola about how the 100-meter race unfolded. "I got in my blocks, focused and concentrated on running my race. My start could have been better, but my top end speed came through in the last 40 meters and that carried me to victory."

Kadine Johnson, who was second on the first day in the hammer throw, added another second-place showing in the shot put with a heave of 43-05.25. Jenn Pierson, who won the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday, was one of three individual champions. Rebecca Kelly (400m-hurdles) and Griffen (100m-hurdles) were also second in their respective events.

In the men's meet, Moore cruised to victory in the 800-meters with a time of 1:49.97 and also posted a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (3:48.66). His teammate Tyler Fogarty was first at the 1,500 finish in 3:47.65. Valete Graham jump-started his team by winning his third consecutive America East long jump championship on Saturday with a mark of 24-feet, 7.75-inches. He is just the second athlete since Northeastern's Dave Klemic (1998-2000) to win the long jump three years in a row. Graham came back to take fifth in Sunday's triple jump (47-10).

"I only had about an hour after the 1,500 to get ready for the (800) heat," Moore explained about his 800-meter performance. "It is tough to double up like that because your legs are so tired, but I am a competitor. I was third behind Nick Santos and a runner from Boston U. (Jeff Moreau). I pushed, took the lead with 300 meters to go and never looked back."

UAlbany was victorious in two relay events on the final day. The 4x100 group of Jake Rachiele, Germain Smith, Earnest Waters and Tristan Akong edged out UMBC by three one-thousandths of a second. UAlbany was timed in 41.654 to UMBC's 41.657. The Great Danes also won the 4x800 relay in 7:35.89, with Paul Lagno running the anchor leg for Ryan Florkiewicz, Nick Santos and Sean Halpin. Freddie Wills was UAlbany's fourth individual winner. Wills cleared the high jump bar at 6-feet, 9.75-inches and has won four America East outdoor events during his career.

University of Albany's Brendan Rowland Leads Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep of UMBC - UAlbany Sports 2010

Baltimore, Md. - Senior centerfielder Brendan Rowland hit a homerun in both ends of an America East Conference doubleheader to lead UAlbany to a sweep of UMBC on Sunday. The Great Danes cruised to a 13-0 win in game one and held on for a 10-8 victory in the nightcap.

The Great Danes scored runs in all but two innings of the early game, taking a three-run lead in the first inning. UAlbany cruised through the first game, accumulating 13 hits. Rowland's three-run homer to left in the sixth inning gave the Great Danes a 9-0 advantage. Left fielder Pete DiResta drove a homer over the left field fence to cap off a four-run seventh inning for the Great Danes, setting the final score.

Sophomore Zach Kraham pitched a complete-game shutout for UAlbany, striking out three while scattering four hits. Five players recorded multiple hits for the Great Danes, while three players drove in multiple runs. Austin Drewyer took the loss for UMBC in six innings of work.

Rowland hit his second homer of the day in the eighth inning of the nightcap to give UAlbany a 9-5 advantage. UMBC pulled to within 9-8 in the bottom of the frame with three consecutive hits, but reliever Kevin Bartlett entered the game to get the final out for the Great Danes. Freshman Nolan Gaige drove in an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a double into left. After Rick Phillips hit a lead off single in the bottom of the frame, Bartlett got three quick outs to seal up the win and earn his second save of the season.

Greg Lutton earned the win for the Great Danes after two and two thirds innings of actions on the mound. Starter Kasceim Graham went five innings with three strikeouts. Sean Swetnam took the loss on the mound for UMBC (10-27, AE 4-10). Max Himmelstein had three hits, including a solo homer in the fourth, scoring three runs and driving in three more.

University of Albany Women's Lacrosse Wins America East Regular-Season Title and Will Host Championship - UAlbany Sports 2010

Albany, N.Y. - Goalkeeper Ashley Ross saved McKinley Curro's shot with 39 seconds remaining as UAlbany held off Boston University, 12-11, to win its first-ever America East Conference regular-season title on Saturday, May 1 at John Fallon Field. The Great Danes will host next week's conference postseason championship.

UAlbany (13-2, AE 6-0) led 8-4 early in the second half, but the Boston U. (9-8, AE 5-1) came roaring back with three unanswered. Curro,, a senior attacker, scored consecutive goals. The first came in a free-position situation when her attempt went off Mel Rorie's stick and past Ross. She then converted Traci Landy's pass with a shot from the right on a play that originated off a successful clear.

The Terriers, who have won five consecutive conference championships, were still within 11-10, but UAlbany's Rorie sent a free-position shot into the lower left corner with 4:35 to play. Freshman Danielle Etrasco scored on a free-position opportunity from the left with 58.2 seconds left to slice the deficit to one again. Ross, who had two big saves in the final two minutes, later stopped Curro's game-tying attempt.

In the first half, UAlbany jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 13-plus minutes. Taylor Frink set up Olivia Jarem on a pass from behind the cage to the top of the crease. Rorie and Christine Grueniger scored one minute and 13 seconds apart. Rorie spun to her left shoulder from the middle of the zone, before Grueniger found the net in transition after a blocked shot in the defensive half of the field started the play.

The Terriers later closed the gap to 5-3 on back-to-back goals by Xan Weitzel and Corcoran Downey. Weitzel scored on an inside roll from the left, while Downey connected in a free-position situation on a bounce shot. Jarem, a senior midfielder, gave her team a 7-4 lead at the intermission by converting a drive from the left point with 27.5 seconds remaining.

Grueniger had four goals, while Rorie scored three times for the Great Danes, who defeated Boston U. for the first time in 12 tries since the series began in 2002. Ross made eight saves. Curro finished with three goals and one assist.

University of Albany Men's Lacrosse Defeats Binghamton; UAlbany in Tie for Second in America East Standings - UAlbany Sports

Albany, N.Y. - Dave Brock scored two of his three goals in the fourth quarter as UAlbany held off Binghamton, 11-6, in America East Conference play on Saturday, May 1 at John Fallon Field. The Great Danes moved into a tie for second in the league standings and will be the third seed for next week's conference postseason tournament.

Binghamton (4-10, AE 1-4) rallied from a 7-2 halftime deficit with four unanswered, including three in a span of one minute and 24 seconds. Freshman Matt Springer finished off Andy Cook's crossing pass from right of the crease with 44.3 seconds left in the third quarter. The Bearcats struck twice in the opening minute of the final period. Defenseman Ben Waldron found the net with a long pole after his team won the draw to start the quarter. Jeff Donigan closed the gap to 7-6 with a shot from straightaway following another face-off win.

UAlbany (4-10, AE 3-2) regained momentum less than a minute later when freshman Will Fuller hit a cutting Luke Cometti at the top of the crease for a two-goal lead. Dwayne Stewart helped his team push out a 9-6 advantage with 5:27 remaining as he picked up a ground ball in front of the crease and netted the shot. Brock added a pair of goals in the final three minutes. He canned a behind-the-back attempt after Stewart beat a defensive double-team and then dove on the ground to scrape in his 30th goal of the season.

"They dug down because they knew the situation," UAlbany coach Scott Marr said. "We had a solid possession when they cut to 7-6. I thought our defense limited their opportunities and we cleared the ball well."

Binghamton leaped to a 2-0 lead in the opening six minutes. Steve Carlson moved past a midfielder at the top of the zone and fired a sidearm shot low into the cage. Frank Donlon, a junior midfielder, later worked around a defender and scored with another low shot from the left.

UAlbany regrouped by scoring seven consecutive times. Nate Sullivan tied the contest at two apiece when he picked up a ground ball near the crease and found the net after defenseman Brendan Gleason cleared the ball into the scoring area. Jack Reynolds scored the second of his two first-period goals for a 3-2 lead, as the sophomore midfielder drove and went high into the net with a left-handed blast.

Derek Kreuzer and Matt Johnson scored just over two minutes apart for a three-goal lead. Brock finished off a fastbreak from Kyle Crotty after defensive midfielder Mike Finnegan picked up a ground ball following a blocked shot to start the sequence. Kyle Brunk completed another transition play when he sent Brock's pass into the far corner from the right with 2:06 left in the half.

"We were better in all aspects (than our last game) and that adds up to a victory," explained UAlbany midfielder Mark Cometti, one of eight seniors appearing in his final regular-season home game. "The defense stepped up and we had a couple of fastbreak goals."

Sophomore goalkeeper John Carroll made 13 saves, while Derek Kreuzer and Stewart each added one goal and one assist. Donigan, who won 8 of 14 face-offs, was one of six Bearcat goal scorers.

University of Albany Women's Track & Field Stands First, Men Second After Day One at A-East Championships - UAlbany Sports 2010

Durham, N.H. - University at Albany's Jenn Pierson and Laura Cummings placed first and second, respectively, in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead their team to a first-day lead at the 2010 America East Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, May 1 at the University of New Hampshire's Reggie F. Atkins Track Facility. The Great Dane women have an 8.5-point lead over second-place New Hampshire.

Freddie Wills won the men's high jump by clearing 6-feet, 9.75-inches, which was a personal best, and placed fourth in the men's long jump to lead his squad to a second-place standing after the first day of action. The Great Danes have 50 points, which is 31 points behind New Hampshire.

Pierson and Cummings achieved 18 points for the Great Danes in the women's steeplechase. Pierson's winning time of 10:40.46 was a personal best, while Cummings finished the race right behind her teammate in 10:47.93. Showcasing their depth, the Great Danes accumulated at least nine points and had multiple student-athletes score in four of the remaining five finals to keep the lead they held for most of the afternoon. Notable performances were made by Pat McNish, who placed second in the long jump with a mark of 19-1.50, and Kadine Johnson, who finished in the runner-up spot in the hammer throw by registering a toss that sailed 164-9.

Led by Valete Graham, UAlbany's men's team racked up 29 points by taking the top four spots in the long jump. Graham won the event for the third straight season by flying 24-7.75. The mark was less than two inches shy of his school record. Kadeem Howell's second-place mark of 24-1.75 was a personal-best by 11 inches. Fred Casimo placed third by leaping 24-0.75. He was followed by Wills, who registered a mark of 23-9.50.

In the preliminary rounds, the UAlbany men most notably had four student-athletes advance to tomorrow's finals in both hurdles events. Garrett Askew won his heat of the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.83 seconds, while Alan Nimblette placed first in his section of the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in a personal-best time of 53.33. Both marks were the second-fastest times of the day.

Fey Adaramola won both of her heats in the 100- and 200-meter dash events to lead the women's program in the preliminary races. She ran season-best times of 11.85 in the 100 and 24.27 in the 200. Both marks ranked second in the field. Christen Griffin and Rebecca Kelly also won heats in the 100-hurdles and 400-hurdles, respectively. Griffin hit the tape in 14.26 seconds, while Kelly navigated the track in 1:02.44.

The championship meet concludes on Sunday with the first events beginning at 9 a.m.

Paw Prints: After claiming both of the league's indoor titles for the first time in school history this past winter, UAlbany will have the opportunity to become the first school to win all four America East track and field championships in the same academic year tomorrow afternoon ... Three Golfers on MAAC All-Academic Team; UAlbany Third After First Day of Championship

Celebration, Fla. - Sophomore Stephanie Klein earned a 4.00 grade point average to lead three UAlbany golfers on the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, as announced by the league office on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Annemarie Kissane and senior Jessica Signorelli also earned a spot on the squad.

Klein, a pre-med major from Thornhill, Ontario, posted the only 4.00 GPA in the 18 women's golf honorees. Klein has averaged 90.17 over three tournaments in the spring, with her best finish coming at the Hartford Invitational, where she carded a two-day score of 174.

Signorelli, a native of Fairport, N.Y., recorded a 3.78 GPA majoring in communication. She is second on the team with an 84.00 average, and finished second on the team in two of three tournaments. She placed 38th individually at Columbia's Roar-EE Invitational with a two-round score of 160 after shooting a season-best 76 over the first 18 holes.

Kissane, a theatre major from Albany, N.Y., posted a 3.29 GPA. She is averaging 86.00 over the spring and finished second on the squad in the season-opening tournament at William & Mary. Her best individual tournament finish came at the Hartford Invitational, where she shot a two-round score of 170 to place 37th overall.

In the first round of the 2010 MAAC Championship, held at Celebration Golf Club on Friday, UAlbany stands third in the team standings with an 18-hole score of 328. Senior Amanda McPhee led the Great Danes on the first day of action, finishing tied for third individually, carding a score of 78.

Teammates Annemarie Kissane and Stephanie Klein tied for 14th individually with identical scores of 83, while Corrin Conroy was tied for 16th after the first 18 with a score of 84. Jessica Signorelli rounded out the first-day scores, tying for 23rd overall with a round of 90.

The second round of the championship will tee off at 9:45 on Saturday.

UAlbany Basketball Announces Three Student-Athletes Have Signed Letters of Intent for 2010-11 Season

Albany, N.Y. - University at Albany men's basketball coach Will Brown announced on Friday, April 30 that three student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play for the Great Danes in the 2010-11 academic year. Luke Devlin, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward from Sydney, Australia (Newington College H.S.), Theo Hatcher, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Central Arizona College / New Creations Christian School) and Russell Moore, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound guard from New Orleans, La. (John Logan College / St. Augustine H.S.).

Devlin was a 2009 Australian Schoolboys' Basketball Team member after he averaged 23.9 points and 14.7 rebounds as the Newington College MVP. He led his team to the Australia State Championship, plus a Combined Independent Schools title and a Greater Public Schools Conference crown. Devlin was named all-conference three times and twice was a combined independent school all-star.

In 2009, Devlin represented New South Wales at the under-20 national championships. He led that squad to a gold medal, received tournament MVP honors and was the team's leading scorer (14.3 ppg) and rebounder (10.3 ppg). Devlin, who also served as captain for the second straight year on the 2010 New South Wales under-20 team, scored at an 18.6 clip when his squad played a seven-game United States tour in December 2009.

"He has a tremendous skill set for a big man and likes to play physical," UAlbany coach Will Brown said. "He has range to the three-point arc and is very clever in the low post. He possesses a very strong feel for the game, plus can pass the ball."

Hatcher averaged 13.1 points as a sophomore for a Central Arizona College team that finished 17-13 overall. He was ninth among the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference leaders in rebounding (7.8 pg) and second in three-point field goal percentage (.458). He received the school's Male Student-Athlete of the Year Award.

In 2008-09, Hatcher scored at an 11.6 clip and shot 45.4 percent from the three-point arc. He was named to the NJCAA All-Region 1 freshman team. He totaled 15.0 points and 9.8 rebounds as a scholastic senior at New Creations Christian School in Richmond, Ind. The Flyers won the 2008 National Christian School Athletic Association (NCSAA) national championship.

"He is a long, wiry combo forward," Brown stated. "He has the potential to be a match-up problem and is an excellent three-point shooter. Theo will be able to post up small defenders and take bigger defenders out on the perimeter. He is an active rebounder as well."

As a freshman at John Logan College, Moore earned second-team All-Region 24 and second-team All-Great Rivers Athletic Conference honors. He averaged 12.8 points and 4.2 rebounds for a squad that finished with a 20-10 record. Moore helped the Volunteers finish first in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference with a 24-7 record, including a 14-2 mark in league play, as a sophomore. He averaged 7.1 points and 3.4 rebounds on a team that was No. 13 in the final NJCAA Division I national poll.

Moore was named the New Orleans Times-Picayune District 10 Player of the Year as a high school senior. He led St. Augustine High to the 2008 Class 5A state quarterfinals and a 28-6 record. The Purple Knights were coming off a losing campaign the previous season.

"Russell is a hard-nosed perimeter player who gets the job done on both ends of the floor," Brown offered. "He has the ability to be a lockdown defender with his quickness and athleticism. He is a good three-point shooter and is tough at attacking the basket."

University of Albany Softball Sweeps Siena For Third Time This Season; Apostolina Homers in Each Game - UAlbany Sports 2010

Loudonville, N.Y. - Freshman Kylie Apostolina blasted her first career homer and drove in three runs in the opener and senior Leah McIntosh took a perfect game into the seventh inning before finishing with a one-hit shutout in the nightcap as UAlbany swept Siena in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Thursday, April 29 at Siena Field. The Great Danes won the first game, 8-1, before taking the second by a 5-0 decision to extend their winning streak to 15 games against their crosstown rival.

In game one, UAlbany pushed across four runs in the top of the third inning by taking advantage of consecutive Siena errors in the infield. The first two runs scored with two outs when Kristine Bill reached on an error by the second baseman. The Great Danes quickly doubled their lead when Kayla Cilley's grounder to the left side was misplayed by the shortstop.

After Siena (9-34) got one run back in the bottom of the same frame, the visitors scored two more times in the top of the fourth. Kylie Apostolina hit an RBI double to left center with two outs, and Bill followed with an RBI single to center one play later. In the top of the sixth, Apostolina crushed her first career home run after Lindsey Stout was issued a walk to produce the final 8-1 outcome.
UAlbany's Powell, who pitched the first four innings, picked up the victory and improved to 7-10 overall. She allowed just two hits and one run while striking out three. Weiser hurled three scoreless innings of relief. The freshman surrendered one hit and fanned three batters. The Great Dane pitching staff did not issue a walk in the game.

Siena's Amanda Fillipazzo was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven hits and six runs, including only two that were earned, in five innings. She registered two strikeouts and issued four walks. Courtney Brinkman relieved the sophomore for the last two innings. She gave up two hits and two runs while issuing two walks and striking out three Great Dane hitters.

UAlbany quickly seized control in the nightcap by plating two runs in the top of the first when Michelle Connors went yard for the 22nd time of her career. Andrianna Walraven, who singled down the line in right to start the inning, also scored on the play.

While McIntosh was flirting with a perfect game, the Great Danes added two more runs in the third and another in the sixth. Gina Mason belted a two-run double to center field in the third inning to give her team a 4-0 advantage before Apostolina capped the scoring by hitting a solo shot over the fence in dead center for her second home run of the afternoon.

Siena made an attempt to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mandy Ferro blooped a single down the right field line to start the frame and break up McIntosh's perfect game. Three batters later, Mahan kept the Saints alive by drawing a two-out walk. However, McIntosh regained control and fanned Lindsey McCeever for the game's final out.

UAlbany's McIntosh, who tossed her third complete-game shutout of the spring, improved her overall ledger to 7-5 this season. She allowed one hit and issued one walk while matching a season high with 12 strikeouts. Siena's Ferro, who pitched the first three innings, took the loss and fell to 0-6 this year. She allowed seven hits and four runs. She was relieved by Brinkman, who yielded one run and three hits in three innings of work.

UAlbany (18-20), which stands in fourth place in the America East Conference standings, will have the weekend off and wrap up the regular season with a three-game set at UMBC on May 8-9. With potential postseason implications on the line, the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 8, beginning at 1 p.m., and a single game on Sunday, May 9 at 12 p.m.

Paw Prints: Leah McIntosh came three outs shy of throwing her fifth career perfect game and seventh no-hitter in the nightcap ... The senior allowed a leadoff single that barely stayed fair down the line in right to start the seventh and final frame ... McIntosh hurled a national-best four perfect games last season, earning America East Conference Pitcher of the Year honors for her efforts ... University of Albany FCS Football Gets Back On Field For Annual Spring Game

The University at Albany football team held its annual spring intrasquad game on Saturday, marking the return to the field for a team that has undergone a major roster transformation since last season. With the graduation of 17 seniors from last season’s team, the Danes used the spring game as an opportunity to test out their new blood in a game situation.

The game featured two teams of Albany players, as evenly distributed as possible by the coaching staff led by coach Bob Ford, who will be entering his 38th year as the leader of the Danes.

In what was a spirited affair, the Gold team defeated the Purple team by a score of 14-7.

Ford liked what he saw during the game and was even happier to come out of the game unscathed.

“The thing I liked was the thing I’ve enjoyed for the past two weeks [in practice],” Ford said. “We’ve got a fiercely competitive group. I think they came to compete and I think they showed it. They played with a lot of enthusiasm. The second thing I was kind of excited about was that we came out of it injury-free.”

Redshirt freshman quarterback Buddy Leathley had a nice game for the Gold team, throwing 19-of-31 for 179 yards with one touchdown, with the highlight of his day being a well-thrown heave under pressure to wide receiver Jason Poore for a 23-yard gain.

That play set up the first touchdown of the day, a 20-yard run by redshirt freshman running back Tramaine Wilson to the left side that saw him break two tackles to get into the end zone with 4:15 left to play in the first half.

Highly touted quarterback and tailback Andrew Smith did not play Saturday due to an infection, a disappointment for Ford, who wanted to see him on the field.

“Well it hurts Andrew very much. We needed to look at him this spring to see exactly where he is. He is a kid that could probably play three to five possessions on our football squad and one of them certainly is quarterback,” Ford said. “But we didn’t see him one snap under pressure this spring, so now we’re going into the fall with that question unanswered a little bit, and that is ‘Should he be our starting quarterback, or should he be our starting tailback?’”

Smith split time between tailback and quarterback last year while also contributing in trick play packages for the Danes.

The game marked the debut for many of the team’s new faces in addition to a familiar one returning from a lengthy absence in outside linebacker Chris Blais, who missed all of last season with hand and wrist injuries.

“It felt great,” said Blais, who made 31 tackles in 12 appearances two seasons ago before breaking his thumb during the preseason. “The tempo, I kind of went with it. After the first week of spring ball it was a little tough, but I finally got back into the groove of things. I felt really good out there. I felt very comfortable.”

The team will have to cope with the loss of huge contributors in all-time UAlbany great tailback David McCarty, wide receiver Tim Bush, and quarterback Vinny Esposito, who is now playing professional football in Italy. In addition, the team lost all four members of its starting linebacker corps, a point of worry for Ford, who is unsure if the replacements have been found yet.

“I’m not sure, to be honest. I would like to look at the films on that. I think Jon Morgan has blossomed in the first two weeks. So he’s moved from an outside candidate to an inside candidate. I think up until the scrimmage he had played very well so I think we just need to look at the films and see how well he did play,” Ford said.

The defense played a strong game, with Ford remarking how he thought there was some vicious hitting from the outset. Safety Rob Cervini, a transfer from Rutgers who played in last year’s Papajohns.com Bowl, and linebacker Said Gaida, a transfer from the now-defunct program at Hofstra, made their on-field debuts for the Danes with both having strong performances. Defensive end Eddie Delaney also had a strong game, sacking the quarterback twice and knocking down a pass at the line of scrimmage.

On offense, Wilson and fellow running back Ben Miseikis both had strong games in the backfield, with both getting into the end zone on the day, toughening up the battle at that position.

“I think we’re just focusing on learning the plays, knowing the plays and knowing exactly what we’re doing and we all need to just help each other to come out and play our best at all times,” Miseikis said.

The Danes open the season on the road against Maine on Thursday, Sept. 2nd, a team that has made five NCAA Football Championship Subdivision tournament appearances.

Former University of Albany FCS Football Free Safety Dave Casale Signs to Play for Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes - UAlbany Sports 2010

Albany, N.Y. - Dave Casale, the 2009 University at Albany team football captain, from Troy, New York, has signed a two year contract to play football professionally for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL).

In his four seasons with UAlbany, the standout free safety totaled 224 career tackles, ranking 17th on the program's all-time chart, and finished sixth in school history with 11 career interceptions. During the 2009 season alone he recorded 77 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, six pass break-ups, two fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles in 11 games. He received the Great Danes' top defensive back award.

"It's a dream come true to now be able to play the game I love at the professional level," stated Casale, the 6'2, 230 pound free safety who was named All-ECAC and All-Northeast Conference First-Team All-Star multiple times during his career with UAlbany. "My experience at UAlbany as a Great Dane was amazing and has prepared me for the challenges ahead, I'm honored to have been part of such an outstanding program. I look forward to working as hard as I can and playing in the CFL with a championship franchise like the Alouettes."

Casale, 22, is a Troy native and graduated UAlbany with a degree in Business Administration in addition to four varsity letters. Previously he was a graduate of Troy High where he was senior captain of the football team and named to the Albany Times Union and Troy Record all-area First Team, as well as being a two-time All-Big Ten selection.

"Dave has far exceeded my expectations," said UAlbany's Bob Ford, who has served as the school's head football coach since 1970. "He not only turned into a good, he turned into a great one. He did it with hard work in the weight room and on the practice field and by paying attention to detail. He is extremely tough and a fierce competitor."

The Montreal Alouettes are a storied franchise in the Canadian Football League, and were founded in 1946. They have won the CFL Championship, known as the Grey Cup, a total of seven times with the most recent title coming just last year when they defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders back in November. Based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the Alouettes play their home games at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.

Former University of Albany FCS Football Star David McCarty Heading To NFL Tampa Bay Bucs Mini Camp - UAlbany Sports 2010

Albany, N.Y. - University at Albany's David McCarty has stepped around and through defensive ends and cornerbacks for the last four years as the school's all-time leading rusher. His movement on the gridiron takes a different path when the tailback steps on the field for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' National Football League Rookie Mini-Camp this weekend.

"It's taken a while for this to sink in," said McCarty, who was invited to Tampa Bay's rookie camp earlier this week. "I just want a shot to see what I can do, just that one shot."

Only rookies and first-year players will participate in the mini-camp, which begins on Friday at 2:05 p.m. Eastern. The Buccaneers are expected to have at least 70 players on the field, including approximately 40 on tryout contracts. These type of camps have become the normal post-draft procedure for just about every NFL organization.

McCarty set the program standard with 4,287 career rushing yards, but was hampered by several injuries as a senior. However, the 6-foot, 215-pound standout who helped lead UAlbany to a pair of Northeast Conference championships and a Gridiron Classic title still hopes to become one of those players who was not drafted or signed immediately to make an NFL roster, whether it's the 53-man or practice squad.

Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris will bring the rookies in on Thursday evening for an orientation session prior to the first workout. Morris is no stranger to the Division I FCS level after having played at Hofstra in the 1990s and coached at both Cornell and his alma mater.

"I didn't think much about the NFL until my senior year," explained McCarty, a three-time All-Northeast Conference selection who also ran for 100-plus yards a school-record 24 times. "I knew I had a slight opportunity. I just need to show them that I have gotten quicker."

Melissa Coughlin Leads UAlbany to 7-0 Sweep of Hartford in A-East Tennis Action

West Hartford, Conn. - Melissa Coughlin defeated Margaret Potkay, 6-0, 6-0 in singles action and teamed up with Sarah Iannone for an 8-0 win in doubles play to help lead UAlbany to a 7-0 sweep of Hartford in America East Conference tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.

Coughlin was the only player not to lose a point in the match, recording her singles win at No. 6 and a doubles victory in the third spot. Livia Gherman recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Hartford's Livia Blask, while Susan Ma posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Margaret Sabatino at second singles. After dropping the first set, 4-6, Laine Mackey took 6-2, 10-8 decisions from Nicole Haynal in the third singles position. UAlbany completed the singles sweep with wins at No. 4 and No. 5. Caitlin Crowley defeated Amanda Epstein, 6-0, 6-1, while Iannone finished with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kaitlin Lennon.

Hartford's only victory of the day came in an 8-6 win at first doubles by Blask and Sabatino over Mackey and Gherman. Ma and Crowley helped UAlbany take the doubles point with an 8-1 win over Haynal and Lennon at No. 2 doubles.

UAlbany will wrap up the 2010 season over the weekend at the America East Conference Championship, held at the Yale Tennis Center. The fifth-seeded Great Danes will take on #4 UMBC on Friday at 10 a.m.

University of Albany Track & Field's John Moore, Catie Coxon & Stephen Hassard Earn A-East Weekly Awards - UAlbany Sports 2010

Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany's John Moore, Catie Coxon and Stephen Hassard earned America East Conference Track and Field weekly honors, as announced by the league office on Tuesday, April 27. Moore was named the men's track performer of the week for the second time this season, while Coxon earned women's field performer of the week accolades. Hassard was the league's top male field performer.

Moore, a native of Fort Johnson, N.Y., posted victories at the 116th Annual Penn Relays and the first-ever Friendship Meet with the University of Technology of Kingston, Jamaica. He started the week by running the 1,600-meter anchor leg for the distance medley relay team which won the college section in 9:43.15 and broke the school record by 2.56 seconds on April 23. The group, which also included Tyler Fogarty, Jonathan Santana and Nick Santos, also ran the eighth-fastest time overall behind seven schools from the Pacific-10, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Atlantic Coast and Southeastern conferences.

After running the third leg of the 4xMile relay that placed 13th in the championship section in 16:54.02 before a Penn Relays' single-day record crowd on April 24, Moore finished the week by winning the 800-meter run at Monday's Friendship Meet. The junior's personal-best time of 1:49.12 is tied for 19th in the nation, 13th in the East Region and first on the America East Conference performance list. In addition, the mark eclipsed the IC4A championship standard. He edged out Fogarty, whose season-best time of 1:49.40 in the same event is currently 26th in the country and 18th in the East Region.

Coxon, a sophomore from Delanson, N.Y., won the discus throw with ECAC championship marks at two different meets. She most notably recorded a personal-best throw of 157-feet, 3-inches at the Capital District Classic on April 24. The mark challenged the school record and was an America East best by 17 feet, plus ranks 38th in the East Region. Coxon also registered a mark of 146-4 in her premier event at the Friendship Meet.

Hassard, a sophomore from Setauket, N.Y., started the week by winning the discus throw with an IC4A-qualifying performance at the Capital District Classic. His personal-best toss of 159-0 at the meet ranks second on the league's performance list. Hassard also placed second in the event at the Friendship Meet with a mark of 149-1.
The Great Dane men's and women's track and field teams will travel to New Hampshire for the America East Conference Championships on May 1-2. After capturing both of the league's indoor titles for the first time in school history this past winter, UAlbany will have the opportunity to become the first school to win all four America East track and field championships in the same academic year.

Albany, N.Y. - John Moore and Fey Adaramola each registered America East Conference bests in their respective events to lead the UAlbany track and field teams at the 1st Annual Friendship Meet with the University of Technology of Kingston, Jamaica on Monday, April 26. The Great Danes registered 13 IC4A and ECAC qualifying marks, including three that ranked among the top 48 in the East Region at the non-scoring meet held on the UAlbany campus.

Moore won the men's 800-meter run in 1:49.12, a time which ranks 13th in the East Region. The junior was closely followed by Tyler Fogarty and Paul Lagno, who placed second and third with marks of 1:49.40 and 1:51.61, respectively. Fogarty posted the 18th-fastest in the East Region this season, and all three runners qualified for the IC4A Championship in May.

Adaramola won women's 100-meter dash in a blistering 11.87 seconds and qualified for the ECAC Championship. The time tops the America East performance list. She also anchored the women's 4x100-meter relay which navigated the track in 46.60, a league best this spring. Alli Rogers, Christen Griffin and Quante Harris also ran on the relay.

UAlbany, which will look to become the first school to win all four America East Conference track and field championships in the same academic year this weekend, also got strong performances in the track events from hurdlers Rebecca Kelly and Garrett Askew. Kelly met the ECAC standard for the first time in her career by placing third in the women's 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 1:01.66. Askew ran a season-best time of 14.66 in the men's 100-meter high hurdles to qualify for the IC4A meet.

Led by Wilfredo de Jesus Elias, the Great Danes had four IC4A and ECAC qualifiers in field events. de Jesus Elias won the men's hammer throw by registering a season-best toss of 197-feet, 10-inches. The mark ranks 26th in the East Region. Catie Coxon won the women's discus throw for the second time in as many meets by registering a throw that traveled 146-4. Fred Casimo and Pat McNish won the men's and women's long jump, respectively. Casimo leaped 23-5.25, while McNish posted a season-best jump of 19-0.75.

The Great Danes will compete at the 2010 America East Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at New Hampshire on May 1-2. The men's program will aim to win a league-record sixth straight title, while the women will look to claim their second consecutive crown and fourth in the last five years.

UAlbany Unveils Architectural Plan For New Business Building

UAlbany and the School of Business would like to invite you to a news conference where President George Philip, business school Dean Donald Siegel, SUNY Trustee Eunice Ashman Lewin and members of the business community will unveil the architectural plan for the new School of Business building. Located on the campus’ entry plaza, this new building will serve as an educational hub for business and entrepreneurship in the Capital Region and beyond. The event will include Mark Boucher, MBA ’06, Vice President/Operations, at Price Chopper Supermarkets who will demonstrate how UAlbany’s School of Business is partnering with industry to drive innovation and commercialization.
