Youngstown, Ohio – Freshman striker Teresa Boring scored a pair of goals, one in each half, to lead UAlbany to a 2-1 victory over Youngstown State in the first round of the Penguin Classic on Friday, Sept. 14 at Stambaugh Stadium. The Great Danes, who evened their record at 2-2-2, are off to their best start since 1995.

UAlbany took a 1-0 lead in the opening period when Boring converted a penalty kick at the 34:59 mark. Adrienne Heady and Boring put more pressure on Penguin goalkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney with two shots on goal over the next four minutes. But the sophomore netminder came up with two of her 12 saves.

Following an extended halftime due to a lightning delay, Boring went to work again by scoring unassisted 57 seconds into the half. The first-year collegian, who had 111 career goals on the scholastic level when she was a three-time all-section player in the state of Illinois, tallied her third of the season for a 2-0 advantage.

Youngstown State (0-5) sliced the deficit in half at 68:36 when junior midfielder Carrie Wack sent a shot into the net off a feed from Lauren Brennan. But the Great Danes stayed ahead by stepping up the pace on the offensive end. Bodzioney was forced to turn aside three more scoring chances, including Danielle Ethier’s attempt with two minutes and 53 seconds remaining.

Maria Liguori made two saves for the Great Danes, who will meet Indiana State on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in the tournament’s second round. The Sycamores upended Howard, 4-1, in their first-round match.
