Newark, N.J. – Senior Rachel Boles scored her first goal of the season in double overtime to pace the University at Albany women’s soccer team a 2-1 win over NJIT in non-conference action on Friday night at Lubetkin Field.

NJIT (0-2) broke the scoreless tie at the 29:27 mark when Christi Taylor buried a shot from the top of the box to beat UAlbany keeper Maria Liguori to the top right corner. Aine O’Dwyer got the assist for the Highlanders.

UAlbany (1-2-1) knotted the score at 1-1 in the 48th minute, when Diana Barrera, again sparking the Great Danes off the bench, finished a pass from Alicia Gibson to the far post past NJIT’s Sadie Mele.

Neither team could break the tie in the first 10 minute overtime stanza, setting the stage for Boles’ heroics. Teresa Boring sent a cross into the box, and the Medford, N.J. native made no mistake placing the shot to the far post to give UAlbany their first win of the season. Barrera also got credit for an assist on the play.

UAlbany outshot NJIT 11-3 and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Barrera, Boring, and Uju Ogbuawa led the Great Danes with three shots apiece.

Liguori played the entire 103 minutes in goal for UAlbany, making one save. Mele stopped five shots for the Highlanders.

The Great Danes will play on Sunday at Marist. Kickoff is set for at 1:00 p.m.
